I was going to ask in the other thread that talks about past seasons, but thought maybe this belongs here.  I've just started watching the show on Netflix, and I'm halfway through the third episode of the first season.  The character of Evan is so obnoxious.  Can someone tell me if he improves, since I guess no one saw fit to kill him off?

Evan does get better, but starts to backslide, as ganash says, depending who is writing the episode. I feel like his character actually gets the most growth over the course of the series but post season 4 the writing for his character is uneven.

I actually like Evan's character.  I mean, he's a pseudo-hipster doofus, but an adorable one.  I like the way he dresses, too, although I don't know anyone in real life that could actually pull off his wardrobe.  Maybe my love for Paulo Costanzo colors my love for Evan.

ganesh, I hear what you're saying and see that Evan changes from week to week. But what if Evan was always meant to be a smarmy little weasel, and when he's written as better than that it's because there's a tiny minority of writers who occasionally sneak some growth in but the majority just continue to write him as originally conceived when it's their turn?

 

To me, he's never changed. It's just that against all odds he's scored the perfect wife and his better moments are his trying to live up to her. I think left on his own he would be the same inept schemer from season 1. When he acts with Paige things go well but whenever he has to make decisions on his own he seems to act on his worst instincts.

 

Approaching Boris with his business idea breaks that, though. Maybe all the writers recently went out for beers and came back deciding to work together for a better Evan? Time will tell.

I think he was getting ok right around Paige. Maybe whomever decided to bring in Paige is writing Smart Evan. HankMed was growing pretty well by that point. 

 

I think it's largely a case of too many chefs; e.g., Boris intrigue. It was like a different show at that point between Boris/Hank and the rest. 

 

The actor could be fighting for a better character too.

I hate Evan so much.    I'm at Season 2 and having a difficult time justifying watching this series because this asshole bugs me to no end.   He's not funny or clever or cute (although he thinks he's all three).    He sucks the air out of every scene he's in, to the disadvantage of the other actors.   It's the Dr. Smith syndrome.

I used to feel same. But he gets more tolerable. Eventually you begin to see him as Paige does - as someone who just wants to pay back Hank for taking care of him his whole life, but has no earthly idea on how to be an adult. He gets better. Stick with it.

I took your advice and stayed with the series.  I just finished Season Six on Netflix.   I can't say I like Evan any better.  His dickishness kind of peaked at the point where he anticipated that Paige would rent a jet and throw him a birthday party in Tuscany because, you know, he's that special.    Regardless, I have enjoyed the series as a pleasant alternative to the heavier drama I usually watch.   There's something very easygoing about a world where everyone is wealthy, it's always summer and there's no problem large or small that your concierge doctor can't solve.   Plus -- and I seem to be in the minority -- I really like Boris.

I'm glad you stuck with it - sorry my advice on Evan didn't pan out! :-)) It is a fun fluffy sunshiny show. You're right - it's nice to imagine a happy universe full of mansions and wealthy widows and serious opulence. And the houseporn. It's all about the houseporn.

 

Do you wish you knew what happened to Tucker? Because it still eats at me.

Absolutely!  And I spend half the show trying to figure out where on Long Island certain scenes were filmed.  I ran across them a number of times before I moved off the Island a few years ago.

I've tried to like Evan because other posters I like and respect have good explanations for his not being as bad as I see him to be, but in my eyes he always seems to revert to being a greedy, conniving, self-absorbed little weasel the moment there's a conflict between what he wants and what he thinks other people have. Particularly Hank. I hate how Evan immediately jumps to guilt-trip mode whenever he isn't getting what he wants from Hank and how Hank always gives in and manages to be nice about it.

 

Also, there's no way he deserves Paige. I can't see what a gracious, talented, level-headed young woman would see in Evan besides a rehabilitation project, and she didn't need to marry him for that.

 

I'll save you a seat at the table, millennium.

 

Ooh, me too. I love Boris. He's slowly changed from an icy, aloof guy with immeasurable wealth and power to someone who sees reasons to do good in the world and has the means to do it. He's a great exception to the "absolute power corrupts" rule and I look forward to everything he does as he softens up.

What I like about Boris too is that he doesn't buy into Evan's nonsense.   He'll use Evan if it makes business sense, but that's about as far as it goes.  I think he pencils Evan into the same column as Eddie Lawson.   

 

Speaking of Eddie, it pleases me to no end that Henry Winkler found a new home in television.   I was an adolescent when the Fonz craze swept America, so it takes me back to see him return to series television.   I laugh hysterically every time they show that family photo of Hank and Evan as kids, with Eddie -- and Fonzie's head is photoshopped onto Eddie's body!

 

I can't begin to fathom the Paige-Evan relationship.   They should bring her father back more often though.   He seems to have faded away these last two seasons.

I know it's not that type of show, but every time Evan stupidly snoops into Boris' business I've rooted for Boris to have him chopped up into teeny bits and scattered over a continent or two. It's probably only because it would upset Hank that it hasn't happened, but there were a couple of times like when Evan broke into the hospital office Bat Cave when I could see him just about working out the details. It was like a cat watching a bird that was just out of reach wondering if it was worth getting up and pouncing. Another reason Evan has no idea how lucky he is because of Hank.

Do you wish you knew what happened to Tucker? Because it still eats at me. 

 

I never thought about him again after he vanished.   But some characters come and go abruptly in this series.   Emily Peck, for instance.

There was a great line in a recent episode .... Evan had a sit-down with Boris and was nervous because he had to report that a piece of expensive medical equipment had gone missing from the hospital.   Boris explains that actually the government had recalled the equipment and taken it away   Evan says "What a relief.   I thought you were going to have me disappeared."   And Boris, barely looking up from his work, says "No ... not for that."
