That show was on in the late 1980's, nearly 40 years ago.  At that time, a daughter living with two fathers was unique.  Particularly since either of them could have been her father.  It was pretty progressive at the time.

I think using a boy would have worked better - especially as it was the height of the AIDS crisis.
