Season Four: Recurring Villains from Mr. Yang to Despereaux!

So, season four is where I'm noticing a change. And not for the better as far as I'm concerned.  They've started dumbing down Shawn (which I HATE), and the hypocrisy of both Juliet and Lassiter. Also, that we're seeing less of Vick, which I didn't care for.

First, in the "High Top Fade-Out" which I loved, loved, LOVED that Boyz II Men sang the opening and closing credits, was the plot itself. I didn't see Shawn as being jealous of the guys that Gus was tight with in college, but that he was so proud to learn that Gus could sing, was part of a group. That smile on his face in church at the funeral, the way he sang silently along with them, and the sparkle in his eyes. If that's jealousy, then the definition of that has changed. And how he feared that if Gus could "break up" with guys he was so tight with in college, that the same thing could happen with him and Gus? I loved what Gus said to him. I love these two oh so, so much. They are the ONE TRUE PAIRING of the series.

Now to hypocrisy. Yeah, yeah, Gus and Shawn managed to involve themselves in an undercover op, but Lassiter's words to them, about it being personal and a conflict of interest was rich, considering the two other times when cases Lassiter shouldn't have been working on. The first one "Lassie did a Bad Thing" when that dirty cop set him up, and again in "Shawn Has the Yips." It peeved me to no end.  And just what the fuck was Juliet's problem? She didn't need to act like a Lassie clone. And I was at least glad that Shawn through in her face how rich it was that they NOW wanted their help, massacring the line from Hamlet.  And then again in "You Can't Handle This Episode." What? Was she hurt that Shawn said "I love you...ABIGAIL" in "Shawn Takes a Shot in the Dark" that she was being a jerk toward Shawn, throwing in his face about his relationship with his parents? And really, I would have thought this show would have known that when there are military crimes, the local police department doesn't have jurisdiction. JAG does. In this case, the Army's JAG would have taken her brother into custody.

I'm still watching this season now, so will probably create seasons 5-7 when I get up to them.

I hated the dumb down of Shawn. It really wasn't needed. Juliet was really weird in that episode she's never shown to be trying to be like Lassie. My favorite part of season four was Despereaux. He was such a fun character I loved all of his episodes. I loved the Head, the Tail and the Whole Damn Episode and Mr. Yin Presents with all of the Hitchcock references and the hug between Lassie and Juliet.

That's my favorite episode of the series, or at least in the top few. The casting and credits were just so much fun! When they all find their jackets and immediately fall into a routine...only to stop when they realize they're still mad at each other. Shawn's face all lit up watching them sing, and his fear of losing Gus. (If Shawn was "jealous", it was only a desire to be included and join all of them.) I also liked that it gave Gus / Dule got more to do. He's my favorite character! Love his faces.

Also love Despereaux. Don't love anything with Yin/Yang.

I think the only moment that I can see something akin to jealousy is when Gus yells at Kenan and Urkel about "having the best time of our lives" and (if I remember correctly, haven't seen it in years) Shawn's face falls. I think Shawn did take that badly, even if they do explain it as Shawn concerned about a potential breakup later.

I enjoyed season 4 overall. I like some drama in my Psych, so I love "Shawn Takes a Shot in the Dark" and the "Mr. Yin Presents." I enjoy the pure comedy episodes too, but I like seeing silly Shawn getting forced to take things seriously sometimes.

WAHOOOOO!!!!! “High Top Fade Out” was on ION today! I LOVE this episode-From Boyz II Men singing the opening and closing credits, to Dulé singing! And Shawn’s utter happiness at seeing his Best Friend singing A Capella.

But now I’m confused-were there a total of five guys in their college group? Because in that MC Hammer rip-off outfit, there were only four-Joon, Gus, Tony and Diddle(the one who was killed). Yet when Tony shows up again in another episode, Joon’s not there but someone else. I’m sure the role wasn’t recast because Kenan Thompson wasn’t available.

There were four of them. If I remember right, the second episode had Mekhi Phifer playing Jaleel White's brother while Joon for some reason that I don't recall was absent.

Ahhh...okay. I think I thought he was the fifth member or something!?

And not for nothing, James Roday co-wrote this, so no wonder it’s a favorite. He really is a good writer.

Actually, now that I think about it, Shawn's name of "Quarter Black" would've been stupidly funnier if he had been the fifth member. ;)

I think he made himself the fifth member when Tony and Joon’s brother showed up! Wasn’t that the episode where Shawn’s appendix burst?

The whole joke of "He couldn't make it" even after they all reworked their schedules was a subtle 4th wall break as confirmed in commentary for that episode IIRC.

Oh! One of my favorites was on this week! "Shawn Takes a Shot in the Dark!" So, so, good. I don't know why I thought Roday either wrote it or directed it, but he didn't. Andy Berman wrote it and I think Mel (forgetting his last name) directed it. Oh! And the " You're dead to me...got me hopped up on bunny love!" episode with Gus's extreme adventure addict of a girlfriend! "Thrill Seekers and Hell Raisers."

Here's my absolute favorite scene from this episode, where Gus and Shawn are holding and cuddling bunnies, while Gus is gearing up to tell Shawn he has a new girlfriend, who is NOTHING like Mira! ????

Gus: "I have something big to tell you."

Shawn: "You know you can say anything to me, Gus!"(while stroking an adorable bunny) "We've known each other forever and there's absolutely nothing that could dent our impenetrable bond."

Gus: "I have a secret girlfriend."

Shawn: "You're Dead to me."

Gus: "Shawn-"

Shawn: "I can't believe you. You brought me all the way down here to get hopped up on bunny love so you could spring this on me, and I wouldn't make a scene."

Gus: "Yeah, pretty much."

Shawn: "Well, it's working. I don't even remember what this whole thing was about. God, this bunny is strong. Must be Colombian."

***************************************

Gus: "Shawn, the thing is, you have a tendency to scare my girlfriends away."

Shawn: "Why, because I ask a few simple questions?"

Gus: "You asked one girl if she knew the answer to the riddle of the sphinx."

Shawn: "Aaand? Bullet dodged. You're very welcome."

Gus: "You only knew that because you saw it on SuperFriends."

Shawn: "She had the same opportunity to see that same episode, Gus."

And this episode also had this "You know that's right" scene.

I love that scene. Especially how its pretty obvious that Gus brought him there to tell him something but Shawn doesn't pick up on it. I love how Shawn can't get mad at Gus because...it worked. He can't get mad holding bunnies.

I love that Shawn loves bunnies.

I don't know how I missed this but in Bollywood Homicide, Gus shows up at Psych because Shawn told him someone left a dozen bunnies on their door step and Shawn didn't know how to feed them. I also love how Shawn keeps backing up in the interrogation room with Raj when he's telling Shawn he hurts people.
