S02.E05: The Pain Forest

So originally when I watched this episode, I thought that Fernando (who, minus the mushroom incident, was awesome) did 99% of the work while his partner just complained about it being cold all the time. It seemed like she was just sitting there watching him make fire, catch the fish, build the shelter, etc. But during Naked After Dark, she seemed a lot more knowledgeable and they even mentioned that she had actually caught more fish that they didn't show. Apparently they don't show a lot! If anything, I still contend that the host of Naked After Dark asks good questions even if he and the whole show can be very annoying. Also, I actually laughed at their little Leech Week video bit and how those leeches wouldn't stick on anyone. I also got more than a chuckle during their comparison of Samantha's "raft" with EJ and Laura's.

And finally, we learned why they don't just make shoes!!

P.S. I hope the Australian animal expert comes back next season. I can't believe it's already the season finale!

I didn't see After Dark, why is it that they don't make shoes? TIA.

Fernando, the fireman, is really hot. [/shallow] As in, the hottest man I've seen on this show and he's really upbeat. Fernando with the beard. Wow.  Was anyone else screaming at the tv, "Don't eat the 'shroom!"

Scrotum and vag leeches were not good news. Yikes.

Also, I don't believe a "modest" person could just strip, walk up to a  stranger, a crew, and be on tv even pixilated. Not buying that part.

I did see why she was reticent to do naked jumping jacks on camera. That has porn movie written all over it. Nice that he did it with her. That was awesome.

Cute thread title, BTW. Clever!

I think they didn't make shoes because it would have gotten stuck in the suction-like mud.

I think that everyone scream "Don't eat the 'shrooms!"

I wished that they included some of the tidbits from the After Dark in the normal episode. The fact that they actually caught some other fish and they were eating bugs and insects.  The show made it seem that they had really no protein at all during the 21 days.

Dear God Fernando! Grabbing up venomous snakes with his hands, licking poisonous mushrooms... I just want to smack him. But I adore his California boy optimism! Firefighters are first responders so he knows how to deal with things like hypothermia and making his partner do exercises was kind of brilliant.

I wanted to be annoyed with Fernando but his attitude won me over. Although, like y'all, I was yelling at him with the snake & the shrooms. That seemed like a pretty miserable time, but they both stayed relatively together. I think one leech on my lady parts & I would've tapped out. Oh who am I kidding, I would've had to tap out on my audition tape.

I suffered through the after show & finally realized who the host is. I've seen Chelsea Lately maybe three times in my life & he's one of those round table guys. The obnoxiousness makes sense now. I don't know why I keep watching After Dark except I like the few extra tidbits given about the 21 days. And like @niklj, I enjoy the animal expert.

@ari33 I agree that fireman Fernando was hot. He had that weird Survivor thing of getting hotter the dirtier & more scruffy he became. In real life if a man walked up to me looking like he'd rolled in ashes & hadn't bathed in weeks the word hot wouldn't enter my mind. Maybe it's because we don't have smell-o-vision.

Hahaha niklj!! mrbeesknees and I were cracking up at her "raft" as well. It was like what? Three, maybe four bamboo logs tied with twine? Totally falling apart in the water... lawdy. And Fernando was so sweet saying "She really stepped up and build us a raft." LOL too funny.

I am way late to this discussion as I'm just getting in to the show, and recorded this episode last night.  The thing that got me with the exercises is that she is a personal trainer (or so said her onscreen bio) and he had to tell her to do them to warm up?  Seriously?  I get that they probably don't have the energy to really exert themselves, but as a personal trainer she should've thought of exercises to warm up herself me thinks.  On the other hand, maybe she was just so miserable and whiny that she really couldn't function to think about anything else but being wet and freezing.

She's a Texan, and realistically Hypothermia is not something that most Texans spend a lot of time worrying about.  You do have a point, but the broad term 'physical trainer' refers to a lot of people who are kind of notorious for not knowing a lot about the body and how it works.  (There are great personal trainers, but there are plenty of terrible ones too).

Hi fellow fans!

I'm new to this show and was wondering if anyone else thinks its weird that Samantha is complaining about not having any water to drink and there is running water right behind her in one of the shots!!!

I'm no survival expert but the water looks clear and it's running so doesn't that mean it's safe to drink?

No, it's not safe.  It can (and usually does) contain bacteria that can make you deathly ill.  They've had other contestants who have assumed water was safe because it was clear and running, and some of them ended up in the hospital from dysentery.

I'm always surprised that they don't seem to look for or make any type of containers that could catch rainwater, because there sure appears to be a lot of that in most of these episodes. If you can open coconuts, why aren't the empty ones lined up to catch rainwater?
