I thought of Josuke from "Diamond Is Unbreakable." I think that's the official deliquescent look in Japan. So, yeah, Kuwabara. I liked the Honest Trailer for HxH, where the narrator describes him as "Anime's best ginger."

ETA: I like that the big guy's big weapon is a giant pipe. What's the first thing we see him do with it? White smoke bunny scouts. Amusing to me.

Gon and Killua decide to take on Knuckle for real. Grandpa and his two pals were having a grand old time sandbagging all of the weakest Ants, but now the remaining ants are all holed up in the ant nest. And Palm turns out to be a really good cook.

Gon comes within a gnat's hair of beating Knuckle, but knocks himself unconscious instead.

I'll have to rewatch. In the meantime, here's seven minutes of Jan-Ken-Pon anime fun, including Gon ripping up the spider dude and the Bomber. Be warned: lots of Nichijou is included.

Every time someone does rock-paper-scissors, it makes me think of Tremors.

Only in anime can you have a fight with someone like Knuckle, where his best attack is compound interest. He must be a refugee from [C]-Control.

Killua finally starts his fight against Shoot, who's missing an arm but has three floating hands and a floating lantern to compensate. Usually when an anime character loses face, it's not meant literally.

Nice that the Japanese and American voices are similar. I also felt sorry for Gon listening to Knuckle explaining power and compound interest. I figure Gon is a bright kid, but if you give him too much information, his brain starts melting. I didn't get it, either. I'll watch the dub to see if it's any clearer.

Just caught up on the last few episodes. I'm alread tired Neferpitou's "Meow" thing, especially since they play it during the promos. I was told there would be no math. I think I may have learned something about earning potential and finance though.

Not looking forward to the rest of the Kilua and Shoot angst-off.  Meanwhile, Gon will eventually put all his money on Black to somehow pay off this thing.  

Loaning your opponent aura seems like a thing you only use on less powerful opponents.  It kinda reminds me of “Raise your head, Wabisuke!” from flock-of-seagulls guy on Bleach.

Even though it was pretty clear they were going to lose last week,  it was odd we didn't see the rest of either of Gon or Killua's fights. The King stuff was great. Killing Penguin and Turtle though I suppose they did have it coming what with the whole abducting people and eating them thing, telling Colt to get his shine box, and killing the little girl, they quickly established what kind of character he is. I'm curious what Gon and Killua breaking up will have on the rest of the show. 

So today is the two year mark for the show since it started airing on Adult Swim and there are 57 episodes left. Using the first 57 episodes as guide, the series should end sometime in early July 2019, 15 months from now.

The King is born, and his charming personality means that I'm going to think of him as "King Joffrey" from now on. On the bright side though, he isn't as creepy as The King from Burger King. And his little turtle hat makes him look like a greenish penis.

Colt: The humans have been waving them at my troops in the past week, so I figured that was the sign of “Oh, God, don’t murder us.”

Knov: What does this “King” look like?

Colt: As if somebody tried to cosplay as Imperfect Cell and Mumen Rider at the same time.

Knov: Mm hmm. (Jotting down “buggy green dick” in his notebook) Well, the plot had to move eventually. I’m certain our comrades will be coming in for token sacrifices, along with the rookies.

[meanwhile]

Gon: I’m in the fetal position, which shows how fucked things are, where even the chipper protagonist is angsting.

Killua: The weird nen-blocking pink kitty thing doesn’t help. And you’re not the only one who screwed the pooch. After I protect you for a month, I can never see you again.

Gon: All those years training and honing my body . . . and I never decided to take a course in economics. Numbers defeated me, Kil, Who saw that coming?

Killua: Ray Charles? Stevie Wonder?

Gon: (sobbing by himself)

Most of the latest episode was focused on Colt, as he joins the supreme Hunters and watches the Queen die. He really didn't think the newborn King (Newman? Neuman?) would treat her that way. She dies, and Colt finds a teeny tiny fetus in her womb. I dunno what's creepier: the fetus, or Colt getting flashbacks from the kid that was fed to the Queen to make him, Oh, and the fetus might be the kid's sister reincarnated. Thanks, Japan!!

Meanwhile, Gon snaps out of his funk, and he and Killua chat with one of Kite's kids, whose odds of dying a horrifying death went up as she told the boys her story. Also, a bunch of Chimera go off on their own, and the Royal Family start their invasion.

Gon isn't only a chick magnet, he was Whale Island's designated gigolo for older women. I wonder what other surprising things we'll learn about his background:

Killua: "Hey Gon, this looks kind of like a professional wrestling mask."

Gon: "No Killua , that's part of a gimp suit. You see, back on Whale Island..."

He seems to be based on Kim Il-sung. The manga for this episode came out in 2005. He even looks similar to Il-sung's official portrait. It seems East and West Gorteau are analogous to North and South Korea. The NGL was apparently inspired at least somewhat by Cambodia during the KR.

Edit: Researching it more, he's probably based more on Kim Jong-il. Jong-il was known for extravagant tastes and wearing dark sunglasses.

I think "escort" fits Gon better than "gigolo." He just greets older women, takes them around Whale Island, and entertains them with his upbeat attitude. And I like to think Killua was feeling . . . male feelings when he was stalking following Gon and Palm. Palm looked awesome. Only Leorio would be in bigger pain that someone as asexual as Gon is with a woman that hot.

Meanwhile, the chimeras are fucking people up. Of course, there are no fair fights, and Meruem is ambitious mofo. It's gonna get boring until the more skilled Hunters step up to the plate, waste the supporting ants . . . then get brutally murdered by the Royal Guard. And perhaps the last thing some of them will hear is "Wow, that must have hurt like a meowtherfucker."

The messed-up part? I didn't even notice Meruem had a tail exactly like the first two Cells. Hey, as long as we don't get an easily-manipulated and oddly likable pink goo monster to haunt our heroes, we shouldn't complain. For now, anyway.

Gon takes Palm on the perfect date...until he says something wrong and she turns into a crazy lady who has all of the kitchen knives.. Meanwhile, Killua fights Evil Bird Bunny and figures out that his chronic runaway-itis is caused by one of his brother's needles in his head. First he removes the needle, then removes EBB's head.

The Phantom Troupe is back. Turns out that some of the ants have made the mistake of invading their home town, and they're mildly peeved. New members! Nen abilities that we haven't seen before! A human flute! Dead ants!

I know that they popular characters and have become more prominent in the manga, but I really didn't care enough about the Phantom Troupe to see the need for them to be the focus in a fairly unrelated subplot. Ultimately we learned nothing new about them, we knew that they were bad-ass nen users and here we saw them as bad-ass nen users. Back to Gon and company next week.

Apparently, this was the last time we see the Phantom Troupe in the show. So I guess as a send off it wasn't bad, but I still think it was an unnecessary distraction from the main plot.

I like the idea that prolonged stories of human misery can fry Gon's brain just as well as economics.

And I liked the Phantom Troupe side story. Nice to see a group of misfits with offbeat power sets, even if they're all murderers. Sadly, anybody getting a business card from them would expect "Hey, The Rape Clown Wasn't With Us For THAT Long."

I liked the Phantom Troupe mini-arc especially as we finally got to see their powers (YorkNew City we only saw a few) which were neat.

Gon fights a bat and a gorilla-owl, while the chameleon guy watches. Killua stirs up unrest among the people of Not North Korea.

Chameleon guy seems to have some notion of using Gon to accomplish something.

Butterfly guy plays the violin a lot. Too bad this isn't the same universe as Blood+, 'cause then he could do duets with Haji.

I like the new credits, although they spoil that Red Guard has a lot of arms.

I’m going to miss the Troupe if that’s the last we see of them.  They had potential.

How unfair was Fish Darts? That is a straight-up bullshit Stand, not something established in this anime. Killua chopping off the cousins’ heads was a kindness. They were that annoying.

Octopus chimera ant has thick eyebrows. Cool.

So this week we get Morel vs Cheetu.  Cheetu is an idiot and we get a great example of how the show prioritizes being smarter, not stronger. 

 

Also, apparently the Fish Dart guy was Little Kuriboh of Yugioh Abridged (his wife is seemingly going to be voicing one of the characters from FLCL season 3).

"Smarter not stronger" seems to have been a common Toonami thread this week. Over in Naruto they were trading End-Of-Game level illusion strikes, but the winner just used a tiny illusion to make the loser think he had a little bit of juice left in one of his abilities. Space Dandy had the ability to think multi-dimensionally  as the winning move. In DB Super Goku had to figure out Hit's new technique.

No huge movement last week. Basically, we found out Cheetu is a moron, and Meruem is getting really pissed at losing to Blind Bushy Brow Babe. When I saw the credits, I thought she was the fetus grown up. Nope . . . just a game prodigy.

Fuck me, really?!? Totally did not notice. And now I realize Little Kuriboh has played a Freaky Fish Guy, and things have come full circle. BTW, the clip is from 2009. He was still figuring things out.

Just caught up on the last three episodes.I really want to reach into the tv an wipe Gungi Champion's nose. It's very distracting and kind of gross. The Morel vs Cheetu fight was great and funny. Why have a weapon that slower than you? I wish we had seen how Knov beat Flutter. His powers don't seem like they would translate well to fighting airborne targets. Was Palm's alias "Sinker Bell" supposed to be some kind of "The Wire" reference? I really hope we get to see what Killua soon. Also this is the half way point of this arc.

Edit: Now that I said it out loud and looked at it typed out, "Sinker Bell" is just "Tinker Bell" with the 'T' changed to an 'S'. How could I have forgotten that Yoshihiro "Yorknew City" Togashi sucks at naming things. Edited July 30, 2018 by ZoqFotPik

So, Leol tries to kill Morel with a lake's worth of Orange Crush only to have Morel kill him by exhaling. That's what second-hand smoke can do to people, kids, so don't smoke!

Oh, Killua provides some fanservice which prompts Ikalgo to decide he'll follow Killua anywhere.

Morel manages to smoke a pipe while he pipes his smoke. And someone should tell him that carbon dioxide isn't poisonous. Carbon monoxide is the deadly one.

Pretty much anything can be poisonous in enough quantities. CO2 poisoning is called hypercapnia. Morel inhaled large quantities of air in the room. As he exhaled, the CO2 level increased while the amount of O2 decreased. Leol basically suffocated.

It doesn’t explain why Leol’s water never drained though.  Unless he meant that above ground, he has to keep creating more, since it flows away?

Also, if you can borrow anyone’s power, was the tsunami one really the best he could use?

Since you want to argue semantics, Webster defines poison as "a substance that through its chemical action usually kills, injures, or impairs an organism". Inhibiting your ability to breathe would seem to qualify it as a poison.

Even without nen, the physics of which do not make sense, a majority of the stuff the main characters can do is impossible. How many 11 year olds do you know that can run 2 marathons back to back and push a 4 ton door open?

It's been established that people can use nen without knowing it, so I assumed that explained Gon and Killua's super strength early on. Like when Gon teaches himself to "conceal his presence" while stalking Hisoka during the exam.

Nen is basically a type of magic, so that's fine. Where things get hairy in my opinion is with all of the "conditions" and rules behind the scenes, like how aura can be quantified like currency and deducted via interest payments. That is getting a little close to midichlorians.

Maybe overgrown chimera ants are easily killed by carbon dioxide. I don't know. The point: another obnoxiously overpowered Chimera is down. That's enough for me.

There's no Gungi Girl driving Meruem up a wall, so we get a tiny bit of Gon, who is the protagonist of the anime. Also, Killua and his octopus pal. And Kilua is ripped as fuck. I guess assassination training makes for an awesome workout.

Anybody else keeping up? Last episode was mostly both sides planning, along with the chimera ants rousting and hypnotizing the masses. Bonus: the series remembered the existence of Colt. You know, the first humanoid ant that defected upon seeing the cruelty of the newborn king?

I think the latest may have set a record for the least time covered in a single episode. The entire thing was exposition in slow motion. I estimate a grand total of about 15 seconds.

Someone might want to tell Grandpa Earlobes that it's a very bad idea to carpet bomb the area that contains all of one's forces.
