I would still have the same problem of the sequel rehashing the first movie and showing me the first movie again. If I wanted to see the first movie again, I'd watch the first movie again. I want to see something slightly different in the sequel.

I actually wish that had been the focus of the movie. Instead of saving the kids being accomplished in what feels like the first half hour of the movie, make that the majority of the movie. You have one week to prevent Horrible Event X from happening. Doc could use some futuristic harmless high tech gizmo/process to sideline characters.

This the version of the screenplay where they go back to 1967 to set things right.

In the BTTF 2 commentary the Bobs said they didn't delve into the kids because the problem could just be solved by having Doc could have given Marty condoms! Zemeckis said he didn't want to make a story set in the future because depictions of the future because are always inaccurate so they decided to make the future funny. They nixed the 60s plot because there wasn't anything funny about it except fashion and Marty endangering his conception felt like a rehash if the original plot. Zemeckis felt more excited going back to the first movie from a different angle.

I could watch George rescue Loraine and punch Biff over and over. In addition to his growth and bravery, I like that in that moment, Loraine tries to help George. She was no physical match for Biff, but instead of running away or just cowering, she jumps right in. (Leading to Biff shoving her and triggering George’s rage.)

I never thought of that before, but yeah, Lorraine does deserve kudos for that moment. Nobody in the world would’ve blamed her if she just ran when Biff’s attention was back on George, but she wasn’t going to let George get hurt after he stuck his neck out for her. And that goes a long way of explaining why she didn’t seem bothered by Biff being around as the McFly stooge in the new present despite what he did to her. Everybody deals with trauma differently, George stopped him before any damage was done, and like George, she wasn’t afraid of him anymore. Plus, I’m sure both of them got a secret rush out of seeing him brought down so low. Good for them.

Yep. A while back, I realized that while the focus is, of course, on Marty and to a certain extent on George, there’s definitely a Lorraine story going on there too.

Since Back to the Future is hitting a milestone of 40 years, I think it’s time that this classic and its sequels gets its own thread.

I knew I wasn't crazy! We do have a thread for the first one, HERE.

Maybe a moderator can merge the two?

For me, the first is the best; the second the absolute WORST, and the third is...okay. I really wish the original actress who played Jennifer could have been able to do the second and third movies. I really, really, REALLY didn't like Shue.

I didn't think the problem was Shue.  I know it's an issue that has been addressed in the past by the production team (and they said if they had known there would be a sequel, Jennifer would not have been in the Delorean at the end of the first movie), but the writers were never able to get past that and the movie suffered for it.

On the positive side, I did like the general concept of the future and what the writers of the late 1980s imagined 2015 would be like.  Like in a lot of cities, formally run down areas of downtown Hill Valley are spruced up (for example, the parking lot that was in front of the clock tower in 1985 had been turned into a lovely looking park area with a man made lake by 2015).

But even if Jennifer wasn't at the end, I much preferred the first actress in the few scenes we did see of her. I just don't like Shue. And for me, she was the problem.

I preferred Claudia too. Unfortunately she couldn’t reprise the role because her mom got sick, which is understandable.

(And can the mods please merge the two threads so I can stop feeling like an idiot for making a duplicate one? 😳😳😳)

Only BTTF fans would be like "Elizabeth Shue *blechh*!"  🤣 First of all I don't agree that Shue has no talent. The Boys and other shows have proven to me she even got better as she got older.  Shue had a thankless role and did what she could. Claudia Wells was very beautiful but I think Shue's Jennifer fits in more in the OTT tone of the Back to the Future movies. Wells is introduced in the beginning of the movie when you think the world is normal like the real world and she's a normal person, then you get to Marty's house and realize it is not like the real world at all and everything is exaggerated. Everyone else in BTTF movies give very broad performances(Fox, Lloyd, Thompson, Glover) so she decided to be very broad too in what little screentime she had. Her

My headcanon is Marty going back in time changed his personality(where he gets triggered by being called chicken) and also changed Jennifer from looking like Wells to Shue. Marty doesn't notice because of the ripple effect. Also besides appearance her personality changed. Like Wells Jennifer wouldn't have married Marty after the car crash out of pity but Shue Jennifer would.

Wells Jennifer did have an air of confidence that Shue didn’t. One of my favorite Marty and Jennifer moments is in the first movie, when Jennifer is encouraging Marty to send in his audition tape, reminding him of that famous Doc Brown advice: “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.” And while Marty is reciting it, some girls in their 80s workout leotards pass by, and Marty is kind of eyeballing them…and Jennifer, without missing a beat and making a fuss, just turns Marty’s head back to her and playfully says, “That’s good advice, Marty.”

Let’s hear it for secure love interests!

Yeah, Jennifer 1 was secure. Shue-Jen was like my aunt -- well, she was nicknamed the eastern suburbs bike by one of her sisters (one of my other aunts).

I also like the way Wells looks at Marty when his band is auditioning for the battle of the bands. Wells' Jennifer feels like a normal person so I think she would have felt odd in the brief time in the sequel because BTTF 2  is so much more cartoonish.

Interesting trivia, Melora Hardin was cast as Jennifer when Eric Stoltz was Marty but when Stoltz was fired she was let go too because she was an inch taller than Michael J. Fox. If anybody seen Melora on The Office and how her character Jan developed she could have played both a regular performance and the broader comedic style later.

Oddly enough it was the women on the crew who objected to Hardin being paired with Fox.

Not crew members but two female executives at Universal who objected!

It wasn’t until years later that she found out the directive to fire her from “Back to The Future” came from two female executives who “felt that it emasculated their lead character to have a taller girlfriend.”

“I feel like it’s an interesting sign of the times that it was the female executives that felt like they had to be protecting the masculinity of their lead character that way,” Hardin adds.
