Zemeckis said he didn't want to make a story set in the future because depictions of the future because are always inaccurate so they decided to make the future funny. They nixed the 60s plot because there wasn't anything funny about it except fashion and Marty endangering his conception felt like a rehash if the original plot. I know it's an issue that has been addressed in the past by the production team (and they said if they had known there would be a sequel, Jennifer would not have been in the Delorean at the end of the first movie), but the writers were never able to get past that and the movie suffered for it. On the positive side, I did like the general concept of the future and what the writers of the late 1980s imagined 2015 would be like. Like in a lot of cities, formally run down areas of downtown Hill Valley are spruced up (for example, the parking lot that was in front of the clock tower in 1985 had been turned into a lovely looking park area with a man made lake by 2015). The Boys and other shows have proven to me she even got better as she got older. Shue had a thankless role and did what she could. Claudia Wells was very beautiful but I think Shue's Jennifer fits in more in the OTT tone of the Back to the Future movies. Wells is introduced in the beginning of the movie when you think the world is normal like the real world and she's a normal person, then you get to Marty's house and realize it is not like the real world at all and everything is exaggerated. Everyone else in BTTF movies give very broad performances(Fox, Lloyd, Thompson, Glover) so she decided to be very broad too in what little screentime she had. Her My headcanon is Marty going back in time changed his personality(where he gets triggered by being called chicken) and also changed Jennifer from looking like Wells to Shue. Marty doesn't notice because of the ripple effect. Also besides appearance her personality changed. Like Wells Jennifer wouldn't have married Marty after the car crash out of pity but Shue Jennifer would. Fool to cry March 20 Share March 20 (edited) I also like the way Wells looks at Marty when his band is auditioning for the battle of the bands. Wells' Jennifer feels like a normal person so I think she would have felt odd in the brief time in the sequel because BTTF 2 is so much more cartoonish. Interesting trivia, Melora Hardin was cast as Jennifer when Eric Stoltz was Marty but when Stoltz was fired she was let go too because she was an inch taller than Michael J. Fox. If anybody seen Melora on The Office and how her character Jan developed she could have played both a regular performance and the broader comedic style later.
