jah1986 August 31, 2015 Share August 31, 2015 Nice trailer. Something inside must be dead because I was not the least bit saddened by this trailer. I think I'm ready to see it end and see how it all ends. January will be here before you know it. 1 Link to comment
ZoloftBlob August 31, 2015 Share August 31, 2015 Oh you're not dead inside. It's the show that's dead inside. I mean really, I plan to watch but the show has flailed and flapped in the dirt like a methhead having a detox seizure (not that I also watch Fear The Walking Dead) for the last two seasons. Does Mary marry Henry Talbot? Does she hook up with Tom? Does anything good happen to anyone else? Do Anna and Bates ever stop killing? I mean... am I the only one who finds the whole "Edith's potential new man, the estate agent, is a third cousin to Lord Whatever and may magically end up inheriting the title?"... you know... the same exact plot from season one? I'm watching for fun but really...Fellowes gave up writing this show ages ago. 5 Link to comment
Andorra September 1, 2015 Share September 1, 2015 My heart didn't break either. I thought the trailer was pretty lame. No surprise so far. Carson/Hughes yes, nice for the shippers, but I find that pairing so cheesy! I would have preferred them staying friends instead of bringing this corny romantic note into such a great relationship. And aside from that? Nothing particularly interesting in that trailer. At least nothing that made me curious. I'll watch anyway, because I want to know how it all ends, but I'm now glad, that I distanced myself from the show after last season and won't be too sad to leave it behind. Last year this time, I was so full of expectations (none of them came true) and this year I have no expectations at all. I can only be positively surprised. Maybe I will be? Link to comment
SusanSunflower September 1, 2015 Share September 1, 2015 I'd have preferred Hughes and Pattimore opening a B&B ... maybe Daisy's farm -- and I still have misgivings about her being dependent on Carson who is in turn relying on her being his obedient servant, again, as housekeeper their new venture. I've never liked Carson much -- never saw much charm or humor or patience or understanding in him ... and I found his surrogate dad affection for Mary rather squickish. Link to comment
Andorra September 2, 2015 Share September 2, 2015 (edited) I have the same problem with Carson. I understand that he's a "man of his time" and that he wants the old order to remain as it is. So I can completely understand his problem with all the changes and "revolutions" that are taking place. But what really irks me about him is: He doesn't seem to have a heart. He is nice enough to Mrs Hughes and Mary, but aside from them? He never shows much compassion or feeling for people in a bad situation. He's actually ver colc-hearted and unfriendly and I don't see what appeals to the audience? People always seem to see him as a "grumpy" old bear, but with a golden heart, but his actions actually are quite contrary to that picture. He doesn't feel compassion for Ethel, he doesn't feel compassion for Tom when he loses his wife, he doesn't feel compassion for his old friend Charlie or Thomas or Molesly! Molesly even got in his bad situation without any fault and still Carson couldn't care less. If it was just for Charles Carson, he would have let them all rot in hell. Mrs Hughes is always the one who brings him to be a better person, but on his own, he's just terrible! And there's actually the difference between Carson and Robert. Robert is just as conservative as Carson, but he is sympathetic and fair minded. He makes some stupid decisions, but he wants the best for people and has a much warmer heart than Carson. That's why I still like him. Edited September 2, 2015 by Andorra 3 Link to comment
SusanSunflower September 2, 2015 Share September 2, 2015 Granted Robert's superiority in feeling responsible for well-being of those in his charge is likely Fellowes' prejudices made visible, while Carson is a mere functionary, even an "appliance" -- much closer to the terminally repressed butler in "Remains of the Day" than the warm-blooded and multiply flawed Hudson of US/DS. ... yeah, Carson's disapproval schtick is usually boringly predictable 1 Link to comment

Avaleigh September 3, 2015 Share September 3, 2015 Can you elaborate a bit on that? I'm curious! That probably sounded a bit more glum than I meant it to be, Andorra. :) I'm excited about all of the storylines and so far I think I'm going to be happy with the way things shake out but I'm really let down that it looks like they're going to lose or sell the house. I might be wrong, maybe that won't happen, but I honestly hoped that the Crawleys would defy the odds and hang onto the house going into the second war. For me the house is like a character and for them to gut it of all of the art and furniture and everything just makes me sad. I can't help it. I don't want the house to turn into a school or a museum, I'd like to see it stay within the family and eventually be opened up to visitors the way Highclere is now. That's my only gripe. Otherwise I'm really looking forward to seeing everything else. Link to comment

I think that might be a red herring. Remember the trailer always is only about the first 4 to 5 episodes. I'm sure the whole "empty house" storyline is misleading us. 1 Link to comment
ferretrick September 3, 2015 Share September 3, 2015 I want a continuation of the Lord Merton storyline, not because I care about him one way or the other, but because I want SOMEONE to ask Isobel why she is so willing to fight for everyone's happiness but her own. And if the Dowager or Isobel dies, I riot. 3 Link to comment

helenamonster September 3, 2015 Share September 3, 2015 I'm of two minds about the potential "finally losing the house" bit. On one hand, it would be quite the swerve from what I'm expecting of the finale (most everybody happy, lots of cheesiness and fan service) and I'd kind of respect the show for defying my expectations. On the other hand...I had a weirdly hard time handling seeing the SC&P office completely gutted in one of the final episodes of Mad Men; I watched the characters build that place from the ground up, and to see them lose it was difficult for me. I think I'd react the same way if I had to watch all of these characters that I've been following for five-going-on-six seasons on this show have to leave their home, to see the abbey totally empty and handed over to strangers. But I'm always down for an emotional gut punch from my favorite shows, so we'll see. 1 Link to comment
DeepRunner September 3, 2015 Share September 3, 2015 Trailer is good. I saw it the day after it was posted by ITV. Thomas looks like he may have some struggles (avoids snarky "serves him right" comment). So who is Edith with? Land Agent Dude? Or...OR...FREAKING OR...Evelyn Napier??? Anyway, I hope the show that has dominated the world stage since it started doesn't end with a whimper. Series Numero Seis...give us something to remember, and not because of bad writing. caligirl50 September 4, 2015 Share September 4, 2015 Some thoughts: I disagree with who wrote, Carson does not feel sorry for Tom when he loses Sybil. He did in fact feel very sorry for him. There was a deleted moment when Tom comes down to breakfast for the first time after Sybil dies and Carson hands him a plate. That spoke volumes to me. I read that Downton will not be lost. Master George will still inherit. Whatever that means. They are also saying that Mary has a U-turn in her storyline. I wonder if Mr. Tolbert doesn't want her. Or maybe she falls for Tom, although I think a sister marrying a man who was married to her sister is kind of odd. I don't think she finds love. I think Edith and Bertie Pelham are two peas in a pod and that is who finds love. Go Edith!!!! I am going to have to stay off this board all fall. I do want to be surprised when the show airs stateside in January. I have a few more weeks but can I just say how jealous I am the UK gets it so much earlier than we do? 1 Link to comment
Cameltoes September 8, 2015 Share September 8, 2015 Re: the empty house. After viewing the trailer a couple more times, I believe there will be a flashforward (or maybe the events of series 6 will be framed as a flashback). It looks like Thomas is going back to visit Downton. So the house will be empty at some point in the future, but I don't think the emptying will take place by series end. There's a scene where the family arrives at the house and the could be part of the flashforward as well, but it doesn't have the same feel as the Thomas scenes. Link to comment
Andorra September 9, 2015 Share September 9, 2015 Neither the scene with Thomas, nor the scene where the family arrives at the house are at Downton. They're completely different houses. Link to comment
