Clanstarling July 12, 2015 Share July 12, 2015 (edited) I think there was a bit of a plot hole with the scene where those guys were beating up Leo (I think - not clear on names yet?) and his friend/synth just stood there. It seemed like they were implying that he had to just stand there and not react to maintain his pretense of being a normal robot. But, Asimov's first law of robotics, which was referenced in Episode one, says that a robot can't allow a human to come to harm by inaction. So, he should have been doing something to break up the fight. He obviously can't directly hurt the other humans, but he should have been able to step in between them to block the punches, or restrain them without hurting them, or something like that, while still seeming like a normal synth. Does no one use a synth as a bodyguard? That didn't add up for me. I'm not sure how I feel about the scene with Niska killing that guy. Obviously the guy was a creep, but if he does have urges to rape a young girl/teenager, isn't it better that he take out those urges on a supposedly unfeeling robot than on a person? His bad luck that the robot he picked actually does have consciousness and feelings, but he couldn't know that. He should have bailed the second she said no. If IIRC correctly, the synth with Leo banged against the table (or something) at one point, which interrupted the fight enough that Leo managed to get out of there with his help. But the comparison between Niska and her compatriot is interesting - she obviously had no problem overcoming the First Law, whereas he struggled with two parts of the first law. In my state there are restrictions on what people can buy using (I think) the state's version of food stamps. So I don't see the literal nanny synth's programming as implausible in the future. But I think it helps to keep in mind when thinking govt vs businesses, that this show seems to be based on the European model of health care - which is primarily government run. Could Niska's revulsion have more to do with the pedo aspect? Anita is all about the little girl, and keeping her from harm. Perhaps Niska has some of whatever compels Anita in her as well. LeGrandElephant July 12, 2015 Share July 12, 2015 (edited) My interpretation was that the "special" synths do not have to obey the three laws, so Niska could kill if she decided to, and that Leo's friend synth was not intervening in order to appear to be a normal synth, not because he actually couldn't. As soon as he intervened Leo yelled run, which seemed to indicate to me that the synth (what's his name?) had broken cover by intervening, and now those guys would realize he wasn't normal. But; what didn't make sense about that is that it SHOULD be normal behavior for a synth to break up a fight without harming the participants. To be clear, I meant he obviously couldn't hurt the other humans while pretending to be a normal synth - I think it's clear the special synths can hurt people if they want but that it's very risky to blow their cover. But it should still be normal synth behavior to intervene in the fight to protect humans without hurting humans. Edited July 12, 2015 by LeGrandElephant 3 Link to comment
Tara Ariano July 13, 2015 Share July 13, 2015 In case you missed it, here's the Previously.TV post on the episode! Humans Synth Niska Is Revolutionary, In More Ways Than One / How one of the sentient synths rose above the rest. 1 Link to comment
LeGrandElephant July 16, 2015 Share July 16, 2015 In case you missed it, here's the Previously.TV post on the episode! Humans Synth Niska Is Revolutionary, In More Ways Than One / How one of the sentient synths rose above the rest. "My father," grits Niska. Ok, I don't have episode 1 on my Tivo anymore to check the BB gun scene, but I do still have episode 2, and I checked, and Niska definitely did not say any line about her father while she was killing that guy in the brothel, as it says in the recap. So, apparently the airings ARE different. What's the deal? AMC making room for more commercials? Not cool. 1 Link to comment
John Potts July 16, 2015 Share July 16, 2015 LeGrandElephant So, apparently the airings ARE different. What's the deal? AMC making room for more commercials? Not cool. Well it's broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK, which does have ads, so that shouldn't be the case, Unless they felt "10 minutes of ads just aren't enough - we need 20!" (or whatever) which is possible, I guess. 1 Link to comment
CoderLady July 20, 2015 Share July 20, 2015 Sadly enough, it's almost 20 minutes now. Whenever I watch an episode of a recent hour-long show on Netflix, the actual running time is 42 - 43 minutes. Gotta sell those dating sites, electronic gadgets, cars and yogurt, you know. 1 Link to comment
KarenX July 30, 2015 Share July 30, 2015 "If they can make synth bodies that work so well, why can't they replace that lady's legs instead of having a synth carry her around?" She's getting better. Whatever happened--the car crash?--she's already walking (a limited number of steps each day) and the physical therapy synth is only for a few weeks. He's there for a certain at-home treatment and then will move on. If they are making robot brains intricate enough to become self-aware, I'm sure that reconnecting nerve fibers is routine now. 1 Link to comment
Which Tyler July 30, 2015 Share July 30, 2015 If they are making robot brains intricate enough to become self-aware, I'm sure that reconnecting nerve fibers is routine now. That's a really good point - and probably answers one of my major issues; which is how come Jill goes from being unable to walk, to standing, to walking unaided in what seems like a few days. That's a good 6 months worth of rehab right there, and they get the synth for 2 weeks (IIRC). 1 Link to comment
ElectricBoogaloo September 23, 2018 Share September 23, 2018 (edited) While I understand Laura and Matilda being suspicious about Anita, that makes it seem really stupid for them to discuss it right in front of her. Matilda's boyfriend seems like an idiot, but I guess that's high school for you. Loved that Laura defended Matilda from the reprogramming charges with the lady at school but later revealed that she knew Matilda had done it.HA! Leo is a synth! Poor George. He was right - Vera is a jailer. He's now a prisoner in his own home. Although part of me is sad that I'm just discovering the show now (three years late), the other part of me is excited that I can binge watch instead of having to wait a week in between each episode to find out what happens next!
