I'm not trying to save it, I'm just curious why so many people are voting against Criss Angel is a Douchebag -- personally, there are a couple I would eliminate first, but that's just me.  Maybe I missed part of the episode.  *shrug*

Is Criss Angel Is A Douchebag the worst of the season? Probably not, but it's also not the best. I personally don't care for it because it's rather boring and didn't care for the whole "I killed my brother" crying-in-his-beer talk at the end. But mostly, I don't really get how not wanting to be doing it when he's an old man was Sam's motivation to start working with Ruby again. Yeah, it's mostly an excuse, but I didn't care for it one bit. But there are others that are worse, IMO.

 

::whispers:: Plus, I also like to see progression in this game, it lasts far too long already, so I kinda just jumped on the bandwagon so we could get some eliminated quickly. Shhh, don't tell anyone, this is between you and me, right? ;)

I'm not trying to save it, I'm just curious why so many people are voting against Criss Angel is a Douchebag -- personally, there are a couple I would eliminate first, but that's just me.  Maybe I missed part of the episode.  *shrug*

I agree it isn't the worst and It's always interesting to see which one goes first because sometimes it is one that I would have put in the middle, the ep with Sara in season 1 comes to mind.  Family Remains would have been my first pick.  But we did get to see Dean almost hung in Criss Angel.  My problem with this season, I haven't rewatched so I'm just going by the ones I remember and there isn't that many of them.  I'm sure there are favorite bits in every one, because I remember thinking that during the live watch but I also got frustrated with lets destroy the brother's relationship pretty fast.  I wish they had kept the mystery of who was after Dean, a bit longer.

My problems with Criss Angel is a Douchebag

- I just didn't like any of the old guys. Especially Barry B.'s character.  I didn't feel sorry for them, I didn't find them particularly funny, and I didn't care for Barry's sadness in the end.  I usually a bleeding heart.  Just didn't feel the love.

- The punkgician was a douchebag.

- I didn't feel the theoretical parallel with Sam & Dean.

- The "Chief" gag felt paint-by-numbers

- It took me a third rewatch to figure out THIS WAS THE PIVOTAL MOMENT OF SAM'S ARC.  This is when Sam decides to go back to Ruby.  They didn't sell it nearly well enough and Sam's character suffers for it (not only in this season but for the rest of the series).

- Hey, that's my hometown and you kinda made a bleech episode in it.  I kinda hate that.

 

Ahem.. /rant off

 

This is my Tuesday night vote since my plane doesn't land until early Wednesday am. I won't vote off Family Remains because I thought it was good with the scary plus angst -- even though what's-her-name is not a very good actress.

My #1 issue with the ep. It had ONE job and it did it poorly.

Yes, there's that bit where Ruby shows up only to dress Sam down about how he's not looking for Lilith and instead hanging with a bunch of magicians, implying that up till this point he had stayed away from Ruby's machinations. Then there's the whole discussion between Sam and Dean about how they probably won't live to a ripe old age because their lives suck and all, but if they do, they'd still probably be hunting monsters with walkers, because their lives will still suck. Then at the end Ruby drives up in her very own shiny muscle car and Sam tells her he's back in because he doesn't want to be doing this when he's an old man. It really makes little sense, so it's probably best that you didn't notice it to begin with.

So I'm apparently going to be the one to send Metamorphosis to Hell without hope of Angel rescue.  Fair enough.  Here's my Eulogy on this one: I loved that we got a stellar insight into Sam's freak issue.  It's one of the few episode that really gives us Sam's perspective.  But they surrounded it with a gross-out bunch of scenes that I had a hard time enjoying.  If I'm going to be scared or grossed out, it has to work for me.  And the raw hamburger looking thing just didn't. So the good stuff (Sam stuff) gets lost when it deserved a better episode.  So when I rewatch that episode? I fast forward through the monster and go straight to the angst.  And it kinda pisses me off.  Because here is Sam DEVELOPMENT and they buried it in a B- episode (IMO).  Is it the third worst episode of the season?  Not really. But it's definitely in the bottom tier cause of the MOTW for me.  But kudos to JP and JA for some excellent bro-moments.

Hmmm... not sure what people have against the two-parter of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Heaven and Hell".  I kinda thought they were awesome. Of loved the idea of a previously-fallen Angel picking up Angel radio. I loved the first time Alastair kinda wiped the floor with them and they jumped out the window.  I had no problem with the awkward sex (because awkward sex is all this show is capable of and as awkward sex goes, I thought both were fine). I liked the plot twist of bringing the two forces together and then running away. So...I'm curious why these are dropping so quickly and want to give at least one more shot at Heaven and Hell before it goes out.

As for what I have against After School Special, the Dean-actor just didn't sell me.  I compare that with the guy they got in S9 and there's just no contest IMO.  The S9 kid had a more layered performance IMO.  On the other hand I love Colin Ford as little Sam.  But the plot was kinda ...meh for me so I'm throwing it under the school bus.

I thought the first episode was just fine. Part 2 not so much. The beginning was fine, and I could forgive the awkward sex, but then there was gratuitous torture and the silly grace tree. There was wasted potential there.

 

I generally enjoy I Know What You Did Last Summer, but Heaven And Hell, not so much. The first one was interesting with the case surrounding Anna; jumping through the window; patching themselves back up in the motel; could have lived without the flashbacks because I didn't think they actually told us anything useful and the sex scene wasn't all that sexy to me, but Dean's reaction to the Sam telling him it in such detail was fairly priceless. It's not perfect, but wasn't bad either. Heaven and Hell is just a mess, IMO. They had to even out the awkward sex and even out how both of the boys did bad things in their time of separation; then the grace tree business so they could get the line in about a demon and angel in the backseat. It just feels like its an episode they built around two or three scenes they thought would be really cool but there wasn't enough story in-between those two or three scenes to span an entire episode.

 

I think S4 is the season that will surprise us all the most in the voting. It seems to me it's the season of conflict; not only between the boys, but the fandom as well.

I give Heaven and Hell higher marks than I Know What You Did Last Summer because Jensen reasons and being skeeved out with Ruby and Sam in IKWYDLS .

 

I did not ever need to hear Ruby call him Sammy much less that he ALLOWED her to call him Sammy, considering how he told Gordon, that NO one but Dean gets to call him that. Sam had no business trying to equate Dean lying about his time in Hell or not talking about it with Sam's relationship with Ruby. Those are not equal things at all and it pissed me off that Dean did not push back on that. It's Dean's prerogative to not talk about what happened until he's ready. 

I never really liked Ruby 2.0.

 

On the flip side I really did like the dynamic between Dean and Anna because Anna had no stake in wanting to sleep with Dean aside from being a fallen angel that wanted to have sex. I liked that Dean seemed pretty impressed that she had actually been the boss of Castiel and not in a patronizing way. He was just like 'Nice'.  As much as I enjoyed Dean's final confession scene, I prefer the scene when Anna tells Dean she knows what happened in Hell and IMO Dean's reaction was one of Jensen's all-time  best Ackting moments. I was not skeeved out by their sex scene because it was about comfort and feeling alive, not manipulation.

What they did to Dean in After School Special makes me vote this one down.  I liked younger Sam but agree they badly casted the younger Dean.  If I had one more vote I would try to bring up Heaven and Hell but voted down the other one since they should go out together and it certainly isn't better than Heaven and Hell in my opinion.  I do agree that the outcome  may not reflect my personal views and I would have to re-watch the season to figure this one out, just don't have time to do that right now.

I'll admit it: "Afterschool Special" was about Sam for me. I agree that the Dean parts weren't the best, but having a Sam episode every once in a while - even one with a pretty depressing message * - for me is a good thing. But on the subject of ringing false for me... I am completely gleeful that I get to kill "Sex and Violence." Good riddance, in my opinion, and if I had my choice it would've gone first. What they did to Sam's character in that episode pissed me off. It wasn't at all needed and served only to further the hatchet job on Sam's character that season to create angst for angst's sake. An ugly and unnecessary episode all around for me.

 

As for "Heaven and Hell" vs "I Know..." I agree that the Sam/Ruby stuff was skeezy, but for me it was supposed to be. (And hee to Sam's revenge with TMI - Dean's turn to want to gouge his eyes out). The good stuff with Anna and Dean in H&H for me was not enough to save the gratuitous Ruby torture** and the grace tree thing.

 

* Although the message was better than the hatchet job/forgetting that message that occurred in season 8, so I prefer this. At least Sam learned something here and matured. It's too bad they turned around and ruined some of that with "Sex an Violence" and then killed it completely in season 8, but that isn't this episode's fault.

 

** which was more skeezy than the Sam/Ruby sex: Eric Kripke wasn't just confusing porn with reality here, in my opinion, he was confusing porn with torture porn... which eww. The worst Kripke episode for me. I can't believe he wrote it.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

 

Although there are moments that I like of IKWYDLS, to me both it and Heaven & Hell need to go out close together.  But I went after "After School Special", because of  the horrible job they did with Dean.  Maybe another actor could have helped the script, but the size difference just didn't work and the actor was the same age of Jared when he started and his performance takes me out every time.  Yes I do love Collin Ford and I do love Dean in the gym shorts but not enough to save it.

 

I did enjoy the scene where they jump out of the church, unless I'm remembering the wrong ep.  So someone that loves the ep more can give it a better send off for it's final resting place.
