S01.E01: Into The Ring

Recommended Posts

I think Deadpool is rumoured to be aiming for an R rating, but it's not strictly Marvel.  I'd absolutely love it if they did an R rated X-Factor Investigations show/movie. That would work like a charm with this Netflix format. Sadly, the rights to the characters all probably belong to Fox.

I think the problem with a movie is that it would inevitably be a part of the Marvel media whirlwind, and kids would be hopping about demanding to see it. So commercially, it wouldn't be a good move to make it an R. Dr. Strange possibly, but I imagine it will be a very tame horror, with a few jumpy bits to keep people on edge.

You could kind of make the same argument about the tv shows though. Lots of families have netflix but they still chose to make it a show for adults. Now it they made an R rated movie it couldn't have the budget of the avengers, but i bet they could still do something cool. One of my favourite movies based on a marvel property is still the first Blade movie.

I came to this show 100% Daredevil-free.

I thought the opening scene, where young Matt is blinded, was riveting.

Sometime after that, I fell asleep mid-episode.    It felt too dark, too low-key, and that Foggy character was trying too damn hard.

Seeing as I'm in the minority, maybe I'll give it another look.

I'm in. I don't have much to add to what's already been said about the Pilot Episode.

I'm also one of those who had no idea what "The Incident" was. I'll have to get up to speed.

This is what someone said upthread, a super hero show for adults. Definitely not for kids.

The opening credits reminded me of Hannibal (the TV show). These credits really emphasize the "devil" part of Daredevil! For some reason it never really occured to me before how there's religious symbolism in the guy dressing like a devil. Could be because I only watched the movie a long time ago. It was okay from what I recall. Slick popcorn flick, not too memorable.

But this show. This show is going to haunt me. I can feel it already. (I was expecting campy superhero story - this is better than what I thought it was.)

Though just like Agents of SHIELD they put some iffy Chinese in here. I was like "why can't I understand this woman, has my Mandarin gotten so terrible?" But on a Chinese board, other people can't hear what she said either. It's not just me! Yay! But one person got it. Apparently she said "Some people always have blood on their hands, they would feel cold." and the other thing she said was "This man, did he take the cargo for himself or did he make fools out of you?" Those things don't have to be mutually exclusive, Madame Gao. And why is she mocking that guy for having blood on his hands? Isn't she a crime boss like the rest of them?

I just rewatched this episode.  The first time I wasn't paying very close attention, I think I was folding laundry.  But the second time around...the scene of Matt in the confessional, just WOW!  Charlie Cox's delivery of that monologue was heartbreaking.  I was riveted.

I have to admit, I was bored during that scene the first time I watched. I wasn't hooked yet, so it was a lot to ask me to sit through some dude I don't know doing a long speech. I'm glad I stuck with it, but someone with an even shorter attention span than me might have switched it off at that point.

It is really good on rewatch now that I'm invested in Matt's character, though.

And another thing that has me wondering on rewatch - how did Matt manage to get home before Karen so when she got back she wouldn't be all like "OMG, Matt disappeared"? I mean, he had to drop off that assasin at the newspaper. The logistics of it is kinda wonky. But it's a minor nitpicky thing.

Speaking of, how does he manage to have not even a scratch on his face the next day after crashing through a window and falling several stories? Wasn't there blood coming off his face when he got up? Obviously the show wants to keep him pretty, but not even a scratch? I thought he landed on his face? Well, okay, maybe he didn't. Maybe the blood was only coming out of his mouth (it's only internal injuries, no big deal, lol).

That shot of the strand of blood was some very nice cinematography, regardless.

"I liked that they tied into the Avengers and how "the incident" has impacted NYC nearly 3 years out. It kinda shows what happens after the credits roll on the big superhero blockbuster. Life won't just go back to normal. Stuff needs to be rebuilt and people are going to take advantage of that opportunity. I liked the villian talking about how when superheros and their like show up, they make money. While it is kind of questionable that such a big, important city like NYC would still be heavily rebuilding (wouldn't it have gone faster, gotten a lot of assistance and be made more of a priority to get the city back to normal?) three years out, it would have seemed weird to hear nothing about it and it fits people would still be talking about it."

Coming to this discussion a bit late, but it took forever for Ground Zero to be fully excavated and rebuilt. I used to work down there and I walked past that hole for years. It was like an open wound. And the fires in the rubble burned for a long time. I was brushing ash off my car for months afterward. That was difficult reminder that things weren't ever going to be "normal" again.

One of the things I liked about this show from the start was the mention of the Battle of NY, that these events don't happen in a vacuum and have lasting repercussions. Having lived in NYC (not anymore, alas) it really felt like they got it right. I really hate when a show is set in NYC and it's so obvious that it's shot in LA or they don't bother getting details right. (Castle, I'm looking at you!)
