S01.E10: The Presentation

I guess they plan to make at least another season.

Are the hijinks depicted on the show suppose to be what really goes on at the studios or it's some inside baseball stuff about things which actually happened?

If things are as frantic as they depict, it's a wonder any movie gets made.

They're worried about protecting the independence of this fictional studio and their jobs.  But if they got acquired by Amazon, at least some of them might make a lot more money, those whose jobs aren't cut that is.

There's been many entertaining scenes but you just don't feel the stakes.  These workers supposedly are passionate about the movies but aren't most movie studio execs bean counters now or managed by them?

They may want to make great movies but they're all behind this Kool Aid movie so how principled can they be?

I'm looking more forward to season 2 of Platonic than a second season of The Studio, as far as Seth Rogen shows.

You know when you're sober but in a room full of drunk people?  That's how I felt watching this show.  Exhausted and irritated.  Thank goodness it was only 20 minutes.

I feel like the season started off okay but instead of improving it went in the other direction and while they might have hit on a subject that was true or interesting or find a moment of comedy those bits were all a mere flash and the rest of the episode was just stupid and not funny and nothing seemed to really go anywhere.  It was almost like watching a collection of skits.  Mostly unfunny skits.

But why do you care if this bumbling guy succeeds or not?

He's probably made a ton of money so he doesn't "need" the job.  In fact they're  trying to show that he's passionate about the movies.

Studios these days aren't like the ones back in the '50s through the '70s when moguls got to decide on everything.  Now they're owned by media conglomerates and they install a lot of executives who are bottom-line oriented.

Like Matt deciding in episode 1 to buy Scorcese's Jonestown script for $10 million, unilaterally, probably is unlikely.  They're probably more collective responsibilities about deciding whether to approve projects or even buy scripts like that.

They haven't shown that these characters are competent though, like have any of the movies from this studio been released and become hits?  Or critically-acclaimed?

They don't show that aspect, just interactions with guest stars on the sets of movies being shot.

From the chaos they depict, these studio people don't seem competent but do they at least have some success?  If not, you wouldn't think they'd last long in their jobs.

If there is to be multiple seasons of this show, it presumably means  Continental Studios is doing well enough not just to stay in business, avoid getting acquired by Amazon, but having enough commercial success that these characters keep their jobs.
