S01.E06: Antwerp Blues

There’s not enough Harry Da Souza in this episode. 😣

Who is Kat McAllister?

Conrad’s admission of executing Plan B — is he trying to put on a united front with his unhinged wife?

Paul muttering and correcting Conrad’s every word under his breath is my favorite moment. It’s genuinely hilarious. I love Emmett J Scanlan. 😆

The hit squad waiting in the shadows in the warehouse — it cannot be The Mexicans. It doesn’t make sense, logistically.

This show has turned Maeve and Brendan into caricatures — poor characterization or intentional?

Richie should’ve killed Brendan and kept “Lucky Lucky” Seraphina just to annoy Maeve.

Yes. Yes he is ☺️

He’s completely covering for her.

I agree. I kept thinking "that was pretty quick," and how did they know where Seraphina and Brendan were? They were told what hotel Seraphina was staying but that’s it. They were on a farm in the wide open land. If they were followed, it would have been pretty easy to spot them.

Separately, I’m liking Seraphina as a character. She seems to be the most level-headed Harrigan. What would really piss Maeve off is Conrad naming Seraphina as his successor.

I think Conrad is trying take control with that admission, he would look weak otherwise. He still looks incompetent because he didn't secure his family before authorizing the hit.

The hit squad being connected to the Mexicans makes some sense because the Antwerp port is known as Europe's gateway for drugs so the cartel presence there is plausible. The way they totally manhandled the security team? that was a stretch lol

I agree, the episodes are way too short, we need at least 50 minute episodes.

Pierce Brosnan is overacting a lot but I love him!

The other Harrigans are a bunch of lunatics.

Seraphina is cunning, but not in a dramatic way like Maeve.

Conrad looks and sounds like a creepy old man when talking to Gina. 😣

Good point. That makes sense that he had to take credit for the car bombing because he couldn't look weak, and couldn't look unprepared and incompetent.

That means Maeve can get away with a lot, and probably has before.

These episodes are feeling kinda short.

And slow. This entire episode basically moved Brendan and Seraphina to a diamond deal and (again) sent all the other Harrigans to The Cotswald. That's it. Yeah, Conrad showed off some more weird dementia by preemtively defending Maeve (some odd psychology at work there) and Maeve made yet another mindless deal to get rid of people she doesn't like. But we already knew those two characters do things like that.

I wonder if a fed deal to roll over on all these nutjobs is sounding better to Harry about now?

What a good leader would actually do is call out and sacrifice Maeve, and yet Conrad won't. To me that's the more interesting thing than a guy who is slipping trying to look like he is in control. What does she have on him?

Richie could out her as a traitor... forcing Conrad to act...

Right!

Maeve is fueling this war from both sides. She had Vron blown up, and now she's offering Seraphina as a "olive branch" to Richie, but Conrad will want to retaliate if Richie kills Seraphina. Conrad might retaliate just for trying to kill Seraphina even if they are unsuccessful.

Oh Jeebus.

Haven't watched this one yet, because I ended up on a marathon rewatch of Remington Steele, after a YouTube interview with Pierce from last week popped up.

Will try to get to this this weekend, and watch a two-fer!

As for the above statement, MY Remington Pierce Brosnan, overact?

I am not seeing any dementia/senility from Conrad. He was drunk or on his way to getting there. And I’m wondering if he’s playing the long game.

What I am finding frustrating is the sudden change/behavior in character with no build up. And I suspect it’s because this show for now, is a limited series/mini-series.

First, up until this episode, we’ve seen Gina supporting and loving her dad. No resentment over what he does or who he works for. But now with Harry dragging her from her finals, there is resentment, anger, and apparently a 180.

Jan is just stupid as is Bella.

I LOVE Seraphina!

I don’t understand this creepy old man thing they have Conrad doing. Where is the suave, in control Conrad Harrigan we met in the pilot?

Maeve FUCKING SUCKS. I hope Conrad finds out she’s behind it all and pulls the trigger on her himself.

I may do a rewatch, but I don't think up till now we have seen a lot of Gina.

I also think that it is one thing to keep things in stride with Absentee Dad, as it lets Gina do much as she pleases. It's another thing when Dad's BS means that something Gina wants gets screwed up. I also don't know if it has been established how much in the know Gina is about Harry's profession and the real danger it even potentially has her and the rest of the family in.

I take it as a given that Jan does in fact know. Which IMO makes Jan objectively stupider than Bella in grousing at Harry, saying anything to anybody about Harry/Conrad's business, etc.

I can understand Bella trying to make some independent $$ trying to pimp access to Conrad, even if it's a dumb plan, in particular because through Kevin she probably has access to more money than anyone can spend in a lifetime. But maybe she's got a fantasy of leaving Kevin and trying to set up a new life for herself with/without Harry. Also, I can't remember: is she clued in to Eddie being a murderer/the reason why the Harrigans are at war?

I also believe Jan knows.

I believe Jan has always known, and decided a long time ago that she was okay with it but she wanted to remain willfully ignorant about what Harry does. That's the compromise she made with herself. She's okay with it but she doesn't want to know.

She's trying to pimp her father's access to someone he knows in government.

Access to Conrad-->access to the PM (or whoever/whatever big goal Antoine has).

Conrad is Bella's father-in-law, right?  Bella is Kevin's wife, Eddie's mother, and apparently had an affair/relationship/fling with Bella that presumably Kevin/Conrad et al don't know about or have made peace with, right?

Yes, Conrad is Bella's faither-in-law. However, Bella is pimping her father's connections (not her father-in-law). We met Bella's father a couple episodes ago.

Finally got around to that rewatch and don't know how I got that confused. Bella's dad is probably the biggest dirtbag on the show, and given that we're dealing with mobsters and outright psychos, that's saying something. The way he dissed Bella on their meeting about how women in their 40s used to look like painted corpses...I'm hoping his smug ass gets the comeuppance it so richly deserves.
