S01.E14: To Have And To Hold

Recommended Posts

A Mary Jo-centric episode, finally!

Mary Jo and what she does at NIS have ripple effects. She has been helping others navigating their problems as a way to avoid dealing with hers. It’s her way of coping.

Quote

“That’s the job you signed up for. To help make people whole, even when you’re not.”

Seeing 4 names on “not to forget” wall is just heartbreaking. The grief is still there and always will be. 💔

That totally broke my heart. Are we to assume those are the names of all the children they lost?

And I'm so glad that Marcus wasn't the asshole the lawyer he found tried to make him out to be.

I really just wanted to head slap the new hire. She's told Master Sgt. is scheduled to come IN THE AFTERNOON so as not to see his swindler of a wife's victims. But she was so "overwhelmed" she forgot? Whatever. It wasn't rocket science.

That all said, I find this show to be oh so dreary. And why is it so frickin' dark?

Will Harmon, North, and whoever remember that Franks will quit in four years (If the show lasts that long? Maybe the finale will be him quitting over the Kobar Towers incident). Or will they just undo everything that we learned in original show's "Hiatus" that introduced Franks to us?

No, that seemed simply a list of her children.  No indication they died.  On the contrary we see a lot of relatives in the first scene in the kitchen it looked like.

Good episode but can we start a Go Fund Me page to buy production some lighting?

Again, whoever is the artsy fartsy person in production that thought it was some cool "noir" look to totally prevent TV viewers from seeing half the episode should be made to go around blindfolded until they learn their lesson.

It is not art. It is not creative. It is not cool.  It is merely annoying and totally pretentious and driving people away from watching.

I agree.  The dark look of the show is weird.  It's supposed to be in San Diego!  The sun shines there pretty much every day.  I don't know why they want it to look so drab.  I like the show, but the darkness (both literal and figurative) is dragging it down.

On the opposite side it caught my eye that the Master Sergeant's and the other Marines BDU's (did Marines also call theirs's BDU or have their own name?) looked like they were brand new right out of the plastic and have never seen a wash and dry cycle bright colors. None of the old uniforms left over from JAG to be pulled out of storage.

In my mind, the darker tone is to denote the past. We are looking at Gibbs "growing up".

What I'm seeing is like the Fonz took over Happy Days from Richie and the Cunninghams while young Gibbs may have sold the show its the other characters who will determine if the show continues.

I thought it was pretty clear they were all babies that they lost. And there was no mention of children in the divorce.

If that was the case they would have brought it up in the episode.  Instead they made it pretty clear she had to raise the children on her own when he left.  No comment about something tragic about the kids at all.  🤷‍♂️

And there would be no mention of the children in the current day divorce papers since all the children were grown adults at that point.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. She also kept saying that she doesn't want to forget. And looking at media about this episode, multiple miscarriages or neonatal deaths seems to be the most common understanding of the episode.

Here is one example: https://tvline.com/recaps/ncis-origins-mary-jo-four-miscarriages-divorce-episode-14-1235421869/
