Galileo908 March 17 Author Share March 17 (edited) Just when the Gemstones couldn't get sillier, along come jet packs. I missed these fools. And jeez, we got to see Uncle Baby Billy literally waving his dick around. For a show that does a full frontal shot per episode, it was only inevitable we saw his. Bible Bonkers was an app on the Prayer Pod! And of course he'd compare himself to Tyler Perry. "You're more like Luke Perry: dead." Stone cold, Uncle Baby Billy. And here I thought we'd wait an episode or two before the kids found Eli wasting away in Margaritaville, or BJ pole dancing. But they're hitting the ground running. Judy was ready to write out a ransom note smeared in dog shit in case Eli didn't come back. Never change. Kelvin is out and proud now, but he's still the same shit person, selling out acceptance of his sexuality for money. He wrote his own Bible? Well, more likely he just slapped the Prism logo on one, but it's still just as blasphemous. Same goes for Jesse. Of course Pontius got kicked out of The Citadel, and Jesse is still oblivious to being a bad father because Eli is still being a bad father to him. And hello Megan Mullally! Wasn't shocked Eli hooked up with her. patty1h March 17 Share March 17 (edited) I laughed more in the first 5 minutes of this show than I have in months. The crazy rehearsal for Amy Leigh's birthday celebration going to hell, complete with jet pack malfunctions, then Walton Goggins with his junk swinging around. OMG! buttersister March 17 Share March 17 Walt Goggins was on Jimmy Kimmel last week, talking about his dick double. Said he had no input into who it was (a 70-year old guy), but he could determine the movement that would be made. Sailorgirl26 March 17 Share March 17 oh my god have I missed these dysfunctional idiots!! That opener had to be one of the best tv show openers ever. Full frontal old man dick. Uncle Baby Billy was even funnier because I had literally just finished watching White Lotus in which Walton Goggins is playing a character that is on the other side of the universe from Uncle Baby Billy. Am I the only one who thought John Goodman walking down the dock in the robe with the cigar was an absolute homage to The Big Lebowski? This is absolutely going to be a rewatch! 4 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152440-s04e02-you-hurled-me-into-the-very-heart-of-the-seas/#findComment-8609436

patty1h March 17 Share March 17 My one nitpick... Pontius. First, I hate the name and his scenes drag. The character was crowbarred into a few scenes last season for some reason. I find the actor totally rizz-free and surely is related to some producer or investor who asked that he get camera time. Less is more. Aww, Keef wants to get married. Before that tidbit, Keef and Kelvin were in their room and Keef was taking off all of Kelvin's hand/arm jewelry, I got myself braced for a possible fisting scene. Phew! 1 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152440-s04e02-you-hurled-me-into-the-very-heart-of-the-seas/#findComment-8609494
thuganomics85 March 17 Share March 17 I know I can go overboard with the nonstop praise, but hot damn, is Uncle Baby Billy one of the best characters ever put on television. Only seconds in, you see him pop up in that ridiculous gold outfit, and you just know the episode is going to be a great one. And that was only the beginning, as we also got more of his one-liners, insane concepts and ideas, his even crazier, more outlandish outfits, and, of course, literally whipping his dick around. Personally, I've always been under the philosophy that any Walton Goggins is a good thing in TV/films, but Uncle Baby Billy is 100% peak Walton Goggins and might only compete against Boyd Crowder at being his best work ever (and even then, the likes of Shane Vendrell, Lee Russell, and The Ghoul are probably right behind it.) Really enjoyed last week's episode, but it was definitely great revisiting the Gemstone clan and seeing what kind of craziness they've been up to. Not surprisingly, they seem to mainly be in a good spot and are finding success, but they still find ways to hold themselves back from ever fully reaching their potential, and there is still the sense that it could come crashing back down if they aren't careful. Kelvin (and Keefe) being out in the open, but mainly using it to benefit himself with the PRISM concept is certainly on point for the character. Right down to even creating exclusive PRISM bibles for fans. But his need to not be "too open" about it and avoiding the marriage talk with Keefe will likely be an issue going forward. Jesse is definitely struggling with the idea that Gideon sees Eli as more of a mentor than himself. He certainly did himself no favors with the way he acted in the past, but it is true that Eli himself was a bad father to Jesse (and the other siblings) as well, so it does feel almost like a do-over for him, which I imagine will bring up a lot of complicated emotions. Those Prayer Pods are so ridiculous, but I can see them actually being a thing in real life. Nothing I can say that will improve upon the idea of BJ learning to pole dance! Megan Mullally was a surprise and a delight as Aimee-Leigh's friend/potential love interest for Eli. On a slightly more serious note, I really do love how Aimee-Leigh is always a presence in the characters' lives, and even though we've only seen her for a few episodes, you can really see why she has left an impact on every one of them. One of the funniest, if not best, episodes of this series yet. I hope they keep the momentum going! 6 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152440-s04e02-you-hurled-me-into-the-very-heart-of-the-seas/#findComment-8609516

aghst March 17 Share March 17 Do they still have telethons? I thought even Jerry Lewis gave it up. In the previews they talked about donations being down, as well as attendance. Then they have this other televangelists trying to encroach and compete directly with the Gemstones churches. So I get that they're leaning more into the grifting. But jet packs? Why would already gullible people want to give more to these displays of ostentation? When rappers do videos showing off bling, exotic cars or expensive cognac, it must have appealed to some fans, who aspire to that kind of lifestyle. But does the same dynamic work for televangelists? I get that prosperity gospel is an ideology -- maybe a way to get new money people to donate, because it celebrates recent success. Or is the satire to have more and more over the top pageantry and showmanship to show the absurdity of the televangelist game? Then you just wonder about the safety aspect. Jet packs would emit hot exhaust, with toxic fumes, in an enclosed space. Even if it didn't cause burns, the fumes might be unpleasant immediately, never mind the longer term effects. I thought maybe Jesse might run out of fuel as he climbed towards that disco ball and fall. I have no recollection of Pontius. Strange choice of a biblical name for a supposedly pious family. Pontius seems to be skeptical of the televangelist business the way Gideon seemed to be in the earlier seasons but dialed up to 10. Gideon is trying to take the reins of the family preacher lineage, not doing so well. Jesse chafes at how his children are disrespecting him. Even the youngest son made a crack at his expense. Where would they have learned to disrespect their parents? It couldn't be the way they taunted Eli maybe? Also don't get why them calling Eli "pussy" with the obscene gesture would make Eli relent. Not sure if Lori is going to be an over the top character. Without the high pitched voice of Karen Walker, can Megan Mullaly be as large a personality? Maybe she doesn't have to be. Eli and Amy Leigh were chill compared to Jesse, Judy and Kelvin. It appears Jesse's boys are also have calmer personalities, not be as exhaustingly loud and vulgar as their father, aunt and uncle. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152440-s04e02-you-hurled-me-into-the-very-heart-of-the-seas/#findComment-8609728

Why would already gullible people want to give more to these displays of ostentation? Or is the satire to have more and more over the top pageantry and showmanship to show the absurdity of the televangelist game? The answer to the second one is, of course that's the whole point of the whole series. Not sure if the first one is a serious question because of course gullible people want to give more & the reasoning usually given is that it will come back tenfold. It's all a grift, most religions but especially the Christian religion & its many offshoots have always prayed on the gullible, weakest & poorest by fooling the people into the belief that they will get a huge return on their "investment" even if it's only once they die. The Catholics are the worst there is though, they even have their own country & who do you think paid for that, one way or another. It's not just televangelists but a lot of preachers, even one church preachers take money from the weakest & spend it on themselves one way or another. Let me tell you a story that might help you understand a little of how it works. I played poker regularly with a guy who worked as a financial manager of some sort for a local "mega-church", he counted the cash & kept everything in line, they paid him a $250,000 a year salary to make sure that the money collected was well hidden from any prying eyes & he played poker 3 times a week with the little he had skimmed off the top because as he said "hey it's a cash business & as long as I'm keeping their money safe from others they don't miss a couple of hundred $s a day. The couple of hundred was actually $500 a day on top of his salary. Obviously, he got greedy (don't they all) as well as in over his head & lost everything but the church is still chugging away having services 3 days a week & twice on Sundays and taking "donations" from the congregation in the form of cash, checks & even property from peoples wills once they die. Nobody can touch them or even look into their finances as they're a church in name only & what's even better is that it's all tax free. Yes, you guessed it, he started out as a member of the congregation with the best of intentions. Anyone you meet that goes to church will tell you "but my church wouldn't do that, they donate a lot to people who need help" and you can almost guarantee that the money the church donates is about 10% of what they actually take in. Think on that. Show me a poor preacher & I'll show you a rookie preacher because once they realize how easy it is to help themselves very few, but some, won't. 2 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152440-s04e02-you-hurled-me-into-the-very-heart-of-the-seas/#findComment-8609856

patty1h March 18 Share March 18 (edited) Slight tangent, but interesting if you're curious about the behind the scenes shenanigans REAL televangelist get up to, there is a podcaster on Youtube who does deep dives on many of these groups. She has covered such topics as: Jimmy Swaggart's preacher son and his wife, who invited a young hunk into their lives and beds, even hooking him up with his own hotel to run Hip pastor Carl Lentz, mentor to Justin Bieber, and his affair in NYC while his wife and kids were in another state The family behind the Daystar TV empire, rocked after the couple in charge ordered the coverup of a family member stalking their 6 YO grandchild, lest it bring scandal to the church. This soon split the company apart Wacky pastor Gwen Shamblin, she has big hair and pushed a doctrine on weight loss/keeping thin. Then she's in a plane crash There are many more on the page belonging to Not the Good Girl Edited March 18 by patty1h Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152440-s04e02-you-hurled-me-into-the-very-heart-of-the-seas/#findComment-8610153
tennisgurl March 19 Share March 19 Oh Gemstones, you had me again at jetpacks. I thought the Gemstone backstory was great last week, but its wonderful to see these weirdos again. I was a bit surprised when the kids found Eli in Margaritaville so quickly, but it makes sense now that we have Megan Mullally as an old family friend who is going to be Eli's new love interest! Oh I cant wait to see the family react to this one, I was sure that Jessie would rise up so high on his jetpack that he would see Eli making out in the parking lot through the window. Jessie is doing the classic Jessie thing of getting really insecure, this time over Eli being a better mentor than he is, and that making him an even bigger asshole and idiot than usual. BJ's extremely intense commitment to whatever insane thing he's doing never fails to crack me up. Of course Kelvin finally comes out and starts a real relationship with Keefe, and...he's thrilled that it gives him a way to one up his siblings. Very on brand. Now it seems like the issue going forward will be that Kelvin wants to be out but not "SUPER" out as to not make people uncomfortable, but Keefe wants something more. I would give good money to read their Prism bible. Prayer Pods are brilliant, it sounds like something someone in a megachurch would absolutely propose, you just know people in the writers room are very in tune with that culture. 2 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152440-s04e02-you-hurled-me-into-the-very-heart-of-the-seas/#findComment-8611219
laurakaye March 19 Share March 19 I'm not sure if there will ever be another character on tv that makes me laugh and cringe as hard as Judy Gemstone. Edi Patterson does that amazing thing when she's trying to talk as raunchy as her brothers but her voice kind of fades out at the end because she knows she's talking tougher than she really is. The prayer pods? Oh, man...keeping my eyes open for those things to become real. Of course, you must swipe your credit card and choose your donation to enter. Can't be praying for free out in the wild and all! 1 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152440-s04e02-you-hurled-me-into-the-very-heart-of-the-seas/#findComment-8611295
