Lori said "that's rad" when she realized they were going to do a giant origami?

Pretty sure that's slang from her own youth. "rad" wasn't even a thing anymore when I was a kid and I'm 40.

The ladies who were last at Japanese soccer/Hackeysack were so disrespectful.   Well, the one kicking was, anyway.  The ball was kicked to her and she just turned away with angry pouty face.  It was introduced as a very important cultural thing for the Japanese, and she disrespected it .

Phil overstates how culturally significant something is all the time. If it was really something sacred, they wouldn't make a task out of it.

Courtney and Jasmin are sweet but manoman, it was painful to watch them struggle leg after leg. They were the only team that didn’t waste precious minutes with the Ninja task and they still came in last.

I don't think Han & Holden tried the ninja task.  Of course their arguing slowed them down a lot in the origami task.

Brett & Mark, Pops & Jeff, Melinda & Erika all went directly to Fold It.

Not to disparage the good names of Pops and Jeff, but they are "lumberjacks" in . . . St. Louis, Mo. From what I can gather it would probably be more accurate to call them tree trimmers or, at the most, arborists.

I was surprised to learn this, but Missouri actually has quite a few logging and sawmill operations. About 1/3 of the state is forest. Lumberjacks cut down trees to harvest wood, while arborists focus on keeping trees healthy. According to their bios, Pops and Jeff have done both: they wield a mean chain saw, but they are also arborists with their own businesses.

I assume the show is focusing on the lumberjack angle because it’s a catchier title than arborist.

I thought it was a mask, not makeup, but it is indeed fantastic either way.

Also how did Vegas Guy in black get away with black when everyone else has both team members in their color, I wonder? Do they penalize?

I don't think it's a rule that teammates have to wear the same color all the time.  It just tends to work out that way, I'm assuming because the teammates want to do it that way.

Rad was definitely a Gen X term.  I remember it well from the 80s although I'm not sure how much I actually used it.

ok slc resident here. most mormons are not zealots in terms of doctrine, same as are southern baptists which i was raised. we need to not rush to apply labels and expectations. i construe each person first as a person, then i proceed. shades of grey my friends.

eta: sorry to sound preachy, not intent. just sharing thoughts.

This is a good point. I don’t know much about Mormonism, but within every religion I do have knowledge of, there are a range of beliefs and lifestyles. I’m not pointing fingers at anyone here, but I bet a lot of people get their knowledge of Mormons from TV shows, which often focus on extremes for the sake of drama. It doesn’t mean those extremes don’t happen, but they don’t necessarily represent everyone.

Thanks for your insight.

sorry to turn this into mormon hour, just i live here in the heart of mormonism so i kind of feel i have to represent - and i'm not even mormon, i am baptist. and baptists can be way more extreme than mormons, let me tell ya. but this isnt the place.

i'd love to see kyoto someday. but i cant do the kick challenges, bad knees - i'd fall over.

As Rebecca said on Cheers, "Oh, why can't more men send flowers?"

To which Sam replied, "I didn't know Mormons couldn't send flowers."

Okay, back to the thread now...

Good episode. I’m amused that no team managed to complete the Ninja task. A lot of them seemed so amped to do it, and it seemed more fun than origami/ I won’t lie . . . I would’ve gone Ninja because I don’t feel I have the coordination for origami. Maybe it was easier because the paper was bigger?

I also wonder if Japanese people throw spikes and stars the way some Americans like throwing hatchets. I tried that at a fair once. Couldn’t make one of those stick to the board.

Pity the greeter didn’t get to do some actual Kabuki stuff.
