S03.E02: The Way We Were

Am I the only one who liked this episode (aside from Vic returning)? I loved the scenes about Susannah's book and everyone being more connected in the present. I thought Kat was finally finding some peace and moving forward with her family and Elliot. It was good to get some answers about the Coyle's sticker on Colton's guitar, the Colton-Lillian history and her obvious dismay/jealousy of his instant attraction to Del, etc.

The one thing I'm not clear on is Vic. Did he actually return to get his late wife's/Elliot's mother's ring to give to his new fiance and pressure Elliot to be "best man" or did he return to get the ring because he needs money?

I had assumed the way Del behaves is because of Jacob's tragic disappearance. Yet it seems like she was reserved, unfriendly and anti-youthful fun even when she was young. Their first interaction made it seem like she was a young adult annoyed by a teenage boy's ignorance about music she liked. It's also clear that Colton was a time traveler and Del will not consider that her idealized husband had done so but kept it a secret.

Did we know Vic was still alive? I thought he was dead.  Are we going to find out Vic killed his brother?  Is Elliott's mother alive? I feel like they said she just left.

I always thought Evelyn Goodwin was quite a bit older than Del but I guess they were the same age.  I also thought Del was miserable because of what happened to Jacob and Colton ... seems she was always a wet blanket.

"My quarrel isn't with you" is Lewis Goodwin a time traveler?  Who uses the word quarrel in 2024/5?  I mean, how would Kat not have know who he was? If Evelyn and Del were the same age then Lewis and Kat would have been close in age - he said he wasn't raised there but surely Kat would have known who he was?

And if he's Evelyn's son, why does he have the Goodwin name unless she never married and had him out of wedlock.

So both Colton and Alice are time traveling to 1974.  Wonder if Colton knows who she actually is.

Maybe Evelyn gave her son her last name because her family so rich/prominent? Or something happened to her son's father. I don't remember much about her, but something must happen to change her from being so free-spirited to what we've seen of her as an adult.

Is Jasper someone we know in another timeline? Or did Kat just get in the car with him because of the Coyle sticker?

I liked this episode, the 70s timeline looks fun. I laughed at Alice continuing to insist she is not into Colton.

I enjoy the major premise of the show, but sometimes to keeping up with all the time travel makes my head spin! I don't remember - did Elliot give his mother's ring to Kat? Didn't Elliot find a clock in the wall when he was doing the reno? When will we learn about the significance of that? Now that Del is involved with the neighbor, is Colton going to return to mix things up?

Huh, I thought her reaction was reasonable.  Del was friendly enough until Colton got on his "people who like disco are all tone deaf" (which isn't what that term means, bro) high horse. Granted, I have a particularly exhausting  history with that specific brand of pretentious musician, so I could have been projecting... or maybe I am also an unfriendly bitch (a possibility I do not completely discount).

In anycase, she didn't seem all that standoffish.  Just a bit reserved. Evelyn's reaction and comments seemed more a combination of being the complete opposite of reserved, and thus finding Del too uptight by contrast, and a hint of jealousy with the way Colton couldn't break his gaze from Del from the moment she arrived.

And, we saw Del being a very warm and, if slightly less charismatic then her husband, fairly open person in 1999.  So it does appear that the consecutive tragedies made her recede into her reserve and close off with grief.

I'm glad Kat apologized to Elliot for shutting him down with "I don't want to have to take care of you too." That was harsh. I actually flinched when she said it. I kind of understand what she was thinking. Elliot would be new to the experience of being in a new era which has to be disorienting even with his experience from the other perspective.  And the more time travelers running around the more potential for chaos.

Although this show seems to subscribe to the what happened will always happen/paradox premise. So they can't actually cause harm or change anything because if any of them go back, they were always going to go back and the history they know was always based on that.

That said, Kat could have told Elliot that she had to go back because her daughter was apparently tossed into the pond unwillingly, but one of them needed to stay. And/or she could have pointed out that it wasn't a good time them to explore time travel together while her daughter was already somewhere someone forcibly sent her.

Finally, Elliot cannot catch a fucking break.  Not only is Kat kind of a dick who takes him for granted even now that she intermittently acknowledges that she tends to take him for granted, but his father is an absolute bastard. Seem it's just Vic's nature since he was also a little asshole in 1974.

Speaking of, how young was he when Elliot was born? Based on their ages in season one, 15/16 in 1999, Kate and Elliot should have been born in 83 or 84, a mere 10 years or less after the summer we just saw. Vic seemed to be about 12 or so there. Did he get married at 20?
