The Rookie's Nathan Fillion on Nolan's Big Harper Decision and His Pitch for the Series' Final Scene
Plus: He gives an update on his role as Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman movie

You have developed a close relationship with James Gunn over the years, and you are part of his overhaul of the DC Universe, starting with the forthcoming Superman reboot. What sets your Guy Gardner apart from all of the past iterations of Green Lanterns?
Fillion:
He's a jerk! What's important to know is, you don't have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless. So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good. He's not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that's the answer. That's what you do in that moment. I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman. He can't!

SUPERMAN Runtime Revealed Along With Glowing Test Screening Report - Has Jennifer Holland Joined The Cast?
By Josh Wilding   March 18, 2025

Test screenings have dominated the conversation in recent weeks and, in the latest edition of his newsletter, Jeff Sneider shared a few more details.

Chief among them is that he's heard Superman's current runtime is roughly 140 minutes (2 hours, 20 minutes). Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was Gunn's longest movie at 150 minutes, while his DCEU debut, The Suicide Squad, was 132 minutes.

"I spoke to someone this weekend who has seen 'Superman,' and they really liked it," the insider explained. "They said David Corenswet delivers as the Man of Steel and that the 'jokey moments' I mentioned on my podcast, 'The Hot Mic,' were initially viewed out of context, but worked much better within the flow of the edit."

"They compared it to how Gunn balanced the humor and the drama in 'The Suicide Squad,' saying it has genuinely funny moments but it also knows when to drop the shtick and get serious," Sneider added.

In other news, personal trainer Paolo Mascitti has shared some photos from the time he spent working with the Superman cast. Pictured are David Corenswet, Edi Gathegi, Nicholas Hoult, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Rachel Brosnahan, and...Jennifer Holland.

Holland is married to Gunn, so it's possible she was just visiting while he was knee-deep in production. Still, with Harcourt set to return in Peacemaker season 2 this August, it would make sense for her to have a small role in Superman

SUPERMAN Said To Feature A Massive Surprise Cameo; Reactions To Latest Test-Screening

As excitement continues to build for a new Superman trailer at CinemaCon next week (expected, but not confirmed), we have word on one of what is believed to be several surprise appearances in the movie, as well as reactions to the latest test-screening.

According to Jeff Sneider on last night's episode of The Hot Mic, James Gunn's DCU reboot will contain at least one massive cameo. He didn't say much, as he considers it to be a major spoiler, but we may have a little more to go on.

Spoiler

Speculation points to this character being Superman's father, Jor-El, and we've been told that this is the case, but it's going to be the actor, not necessarily who they're playing, that should generate the most buzz.

Another test-screening was reportedly held for Superman on Wednesday night, and once again, we're hearing mixed reports. Some were said to have "loved" the movie, while others didn't like what they saw at all (not exactly a huge surprise).

One Big-Star 'Superman' Cameo Spoiled After Test Screening Reveal...and It Is Not Tom Cruise!
Anthony Lund  March 29, 2025

Spoiler

Almost like nepotism, Gunnism is a thing. Any actor who works with director James Gunn and makes the right impression will be generally set for life in the industry. For that reason, it is probably not too much of a surprise that Bradley Cooper has been revealed as the actor who will be following in the footsteps of stars like Marlon Brando and Russell Crowe in the role of Jor-El.

Shared by @ViewerAnon on X/Twitter, Cooper’s appearance is apparently “not a big spoiler,” although that is probably a matter of opinion, and seems to suggest that his role in the movie will be minimal. This also puts to an end those pretty ludicrous rumors of Tom Cruise playing the role this time around.

Love it! Also, I'm not so up on my DC heroes, but is that Guy Gardener and Hawkwoman? Supergirl will be in this too. I'm a bit concerned that this'll be less a Superman movie and suffer the 'setting things up for the whole series' kind of movie. No. Give me a good Superman movie and I'll trust you to deliver something good again. You can't just endlessly sizzle and say 'next time will be the sausage.'

I'm a little concerned about that too, but I trust James Gunn. I'm sure it will be Superman-centered.

'Superman'
superman-exclusive.jpg Release Date: July 9, 2025

James Gunn's Superman continues to be one of the most talked-about releases of the year, given that it will mark a new chapter in the DCU. With Henry Cavill no longer wearing the red and blue suit, David Corenswet will now play the superhero in a film that will further explore the character's journey to reconciling his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Collider presents a behind-the-scenes look at Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult (who will star as Supeman's arch enemy Lex Luthor), as the two actors are directed by Gunn himself. This exclusive image is the first time we get to see the superhero and the main villain side-by-side.

Warner Bros’ Mike De Luca & Pam Abdy: Playing Long Game, Mixing IP Like ‘Bodyguard’ Revamp & Bold Originals & Animation Despite Brutal Press

DEADLINE: How about Superman? I recall you started that one before James Gunn and Peter Safran became heads of DC…
DE LUCA:
Yes, we hired James in secret to start his Superman script before they took the job.
*  *  *
DE LUCA: I love Superman. I think James Gunn has crushed it. It’s got tons of his trademark heart and humor and the action is jaw dropping. It’s the Superman I grew up with, so I get choked up when I watch it. I think it’s so epic and visually arresting and emotional. The performances are great. It is a five-star movie to me, and I can’t wait for the world to see it. Yeah, we’re really excited about Superman, James crushed it.
*  *  *
DEADLINE: A closer cousin to the Richard Donner-directed originals with Christopher Reeve?
DE LUCA: I
would say in spirit, it is closer to that, but it’s also a big hunk of epic sci-fi. It has a little bit of what I loved about Guardians of the Galaxy, but it’s true-blue Superman. The comic book sources that he uses for inspiration, All-Star Superman and the like are in there, too. It is really a love letter to what has made Superman endure for almost a hundred years. He managed to get it all in there.

Good news for all us Commonwealthians! We can have Superman! There was a lawsuit involving rights and expiries that could have blocked distribution all over the British Commonwealth, but it has been dismissed.

Though, if this was what it took to ditch old Charlie and declare the Republic of Australia, I wouldn't exactly be crying about it. Maybe we should just to be sure. :)

I just watched the trailer.   Must say, this seems pretty dreadful.  Corenswet sounds like an amateur actor and looks like Superman cosplay.   Rachel Brosnahan, who was so bright and colorful in The Marvelous Adventures of Mrs. Maisel, seems washed out and frumpy, like a cheap knockoff of Margot Kidder (whom I thought was a bad choice to begin with).  And way, way too many other characters.  As for Lex Luthor, Nicholas Hoult doesn't seem menacing in the least.   And Krypto reeks of CGI.

I doubt the movie will flop.  The public's loyalty to the character will probably get it across the finish line.   But I felt none of that "screw July, I wanna see this NOW!" emotion I got from the Matt Reeves Batman trailer in advance of that movie.

The hype over James Gunn has left a bad taste, too.   He seems like an egomaniac and all the promotion up till now feels like the movie is more about him than the last son of Krypton.

‘Superman’ Will Debut Globally This Summer As Warner Bros Discovery Escapes Legal Kryptonite In Rights Suit
By Dominic Patten   April 25, 2025
https://deadline.com/2025/04/superman-rights-lawsuit-dismissed-warner-bros-discovery-1236377132/

Superman will soar into cinemas all over the world this summer after a tactical legal win by Warner Bros Discovery and DC Comics over the estate of one of the Man of Steel’s creators.

Citing jurisdictional reach, or lack there of, a federal judge this week TKO’d an ambitious effort launched in January by Mark Warren Peary, executor to the estate of Joe Shuster, to stop the release of the James Gunn-helmed tentpole in parts of what was once the British Empire. Represented by longtime Warner Bros foe Marc Toberoff, the action sought “damages and injunctive relief for Defendants’ ongoing infringement in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia” and other multinational ownership rights.
*  *  *
The Shuster estate “infringement claims are brought explicitly under the laws of foreign countries, not the laws of the United States,” points out U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman in a blunt 13-page order filed Thursday.

“The Court concludes that it lacks subject-matter jurisdiction over this case; the case therefore must be and is dismissed,” Furman adds. “Accordingly, the Court need not and does not address Defendants’ alternative argument that the case should be transferred to another federal district. Additionally, given the Court’s lack of jurisdiction, Peary’s motion for a preliminary injunction must be and is denied as moot.”

Calgary Expo: Nicholas Hoult talks Mad Max, Lex Luthor and transitioning from child star to adult actor

...  In July, he will make his debut as another iconic character when he plays supervillain Lex Luthor in the umpteenth remake of Superman.
*  *  *
Hoult actually auditioned to play the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman reboot, but lost the role to David Corenswet.

“I actually read the script while I was in Calgary shooting the Order,” he said. “The first time I read it, I loved the story and the world that Jim created, it was so rich and full and exciting and different. There were moments when I was reading through some of the Lex scenes and I said maybe I’d be good at those scenes. But then I quickly squashed that.”

He heard from Gunn a few weeks after auditioning for Superman.

“James called me and said ‘How about playing Lex Luthor?’ ” Hoult says. “I cackled. I kind of evilly cackled, I suppose, because I realized the instinct I had when I was in the little kitchen when I was here, that little instinct that said ‘Oh I think you’d make a better Lex in this version of the story and you were right. You kind of dimmed your intuition, but if actually you had listened you knew this was where you supposed to be in this film.”
