S01.E09: Aftermath

Christmas cheer is in the air as the lifeguards prepare for their annual holiday toy drive. While surfing, a local grandpa has a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital, and Hina and Kainalu receive the responsibility of babysitting his grandkids. Sonny tells Laka he is not ready to become a lieutenant, and Laka does not take the news well and spirals at a bar. Chief wants Kenji to replace Sonny as Captain, but Sonny is stern on recommending Em and calls in a final favor with Mayor Emerson. Meanwhile, Will and Em almost get caught in the act by friends, and Hina and Kainalu became more than roommates.

Man, those grandkids are brats.

I don't find Laka attractive enough so I will admit I laughed when those two ladies robbed him.

Why didn't the kids go in the ambulance with their grandfather, so then it's the hospital's problem to track down all of their next of kin?  Or a cop or fireman could have taken them; I didn't understand why they became the lifeguards' responsibility.

Those kids were brats, especially the boy.  Let me get this straight, every Christmas the lifeguards fill up shopping bags of gear to just give away to kids?  Is it only for poor kids, or all kids?  I was surprised at how stuffed each of those bags were, and why more kids weren't coming to claim the free loot.

When the boy kept saying he wanted a different bag, I would have said "nope.  These are free.  You get what you get and you don't get upset."

I agree, there's no way that the EMTs would have simply said "hey lifeguards, you need to watch these kids".  Ridiculous to expect the taxpayers to feed these kids.  They would have been brought to the hospital.  The hospital would have located their father and called him in.

Emerson already gave them his lunch and then the boy has the gall to say he's still hungry.

I know we have seen Kenji before, he appears to be a lieutenant at some other station.  Chief wants Kenji to be captain, Sonny wants Em and forces it through.  Good for Sonny but I still think Sonny isn't going to end up retiring and then he would have made an enemy of the Chief.  At least he's not still all torn up about his nephew.

Em and Will... I like them together.

Laka... told that he won't get promoted to Lieutenant because he's a drunk and he sleeps around and he's not mature enough.  Exactly right.  So he goes to the bar and keeps going.  Gets robbed.  I did feel bad for him but maybe he will learn a lesson from this.

Hina and Kainalu... I don't see it lasting.

The key thing I think is that it’s affecting his work. He’s starting to learn that he’s gotten to the age where regular hard partying can’t be shaken off so easily anymore
