S01.E06: Drift

The swell has settled down, and the North Shore community comes together for Rocky’s paddle out. Hina thinks about switching districts and Em tries to console her after the recent tragedy. Meanwhile, Laka, Will and Kainalu try to save a beachgoer that accidentally spears his own foot while fishing. Romance heats up between Sean and Em, and Sonny takes a personal day to go on a motorcross ride to clear his head, but ends up losing control.

Was Rocky's death even necessarily Hina's fault?  He might have already drowned by the time they found him.  After they found him, they're asking a young woman who weighs maybe a buck twenty to hold on to this wet 200 pound man with one hand while hanging off of a fast jet ski and dealing with powerful waves.  Seems kind of unreasonable to me.  Shouldn't there be some kind of harness on the jet ski?  The ski is designed for rescuing people, it seems like having a harness would be prudent.

Maybe Sonny should have driven a little slower.  Maybe he should have let Hina drive and he hang onto Rocky since he is presumably stronger.

I just don't understand why everyone is acting like Hina and Hina alone was responsible for the death.  It could have happened to any of them.

I'm glad that Will told Em that she should be the one to talk to Hina.  I'm glad that Em found her and I'm glad that Hina got some closure and the two of them had their own ceremony to honour Rocky.  Em is a good boss.

On the other hand, Sonny sucks donkey balls as a boss.  He should have taken a leave of absence after Zion died.  He ditches work to go ride motorbikes with his friend, acts irresponsible to the point where the friend leaves him.  Then runs off the road, crashes his bike, and walks home.  Still not liking him or his issues and honestly don't care about him.  

Em and the fire captain were obviously going to be at the same restaurant that Will and his rich fiance were going to.  Seems like Em and fire captain have gone on quite a number of dates, I was actually expecting him to propose to her.  Of course the show is going to play up this triangle, but I like both Will and Em so I don't mind seeing more of them.

Someone, I think it was Laka, said that what happened to Rocky and Hina could have happened to any lifeguard.  He said that holding on to a dead body, slippery from sunscreen, and in those huge crashing waves - and the person slipping out of your grasp - is part of the job.  To me, that implied that Rocky was already dead.  I think Hina blames herself for losing his body and not allowing the family to get that closure.

Sonny finally wanted to talk to someone (his family, and side note, did we know he was married?) and they told him to stop?!  No!  Let the man finally talk.  He's haunted and becoming a disliked character; he needs to turn a page.

Hot fire captain/EMS guy is moving away, per the previews for the next episode?  I predict that Will and Em will be back together by the end of the season anyway...

I thought Sonny was more upset because Hina jumped off the ski to try to reach Rocky and then they had to save her rather than look for Rocky again. Either way he shouldn’t have yelled at her. These lifeguards are a bit angsty for my taste but overall I like show. I like Will but can’t warm up to Em who always seems smug.

Episode minutiae:

• Kalama Beach Park is not on the North Shore! And that wasn’t Kalama Beach, anyway.
• Julie’s (Will’s fiancée) dad was played by Bill Bartek of The Amazing Race seasons 1 and 7 11 (edited to correct TAR All-Star Season #).
• I, too, thought that Sonny was a single dad before this episode.
• Adam Demos (Will) is getting on my nerves. Every time there’s a rescue, Kala and the others are relieved but still reflect the gravity of the situation, while Will always has this dumb, goofy, inappropriate grin on his face.

I don't think anyone, including Sonny, blamed Rocky's death on Hina. Hina did that but I understand it's human nature.  

I liked Em talking to Hina EXCEPT the part where she didn't reinforce that Hina made a poor decision jumping off the ski and only focused on Sonny yelling at her. I 100% think Sonny should have done that once he calmed down and was calmer but I'm concerned that no else is telling her, "Hey, that was a bad idea. If we had found him again we couldn't grab him because we had to save you. Worse case you could have died too." It really is that simple. She was wrong in that moment for that. I agree with Laka that Sonny was already dead.

I like Will but do not like his fiancée. Also, I do not like Em for him either. I don't think his wedding will happen but I don't want him back with her. Also, also, I really like Harimoto (left over affection for Adam from Hawaii 5-0) and don't want him with Em either.
