S01.E05: XXL

The lifeguards of the North Shore experience the most dangerous ocean conditions the district has seen in years. Sonny assigns Laka as acting lieutenant as Em has the day off and joins Jenn to catch some massive waves. Meanwhile, Kainalu’s father pressures him to leave his shift and help him with his campaign over patrolling the beaches. Hina thinks she is ready to back-up the rescue skis, and Laka and Will almost make it through the day when a fight breaks out among locals. Emotions reach a boiling point for Sonny when he experiences another loss.

I thought this was the best episode yet.  Lots of water/surfing action, exciting rescue action.

I like the interactions between the lifeguards.  Looks like Hina and Kainalu will be roommates for real after he has to start paying rent to his jerk dad.

I know I should be more sympathetic to Sonny, but I just can't.  He is the worst character on this show, I wish he would retire and let Em take over as Captain.

I'd be much more sympathetic to him if he'd actually get help.  I'd even be sympathetic if it was more obvious that he doesn't realize that he needs help.  But he knows he needs help, everyone knows he needs help, everyone has told him to go get help, and he just still flat-out refuses.  So yeah, I don't have sympathy for him either.

I like Sonny and think his character is nuanced and interesting. Who I don’t like is Em. She struts in like she is better than everyone else and is always putting the other lifeguards down. I like everyone else.

I'm Team Uncle Sonny regarding, Hina. If she had stayed on the ski and he yelled at her that would he one thing but he reprimanded her for disobeying in a severely dangerous situation.  Could there be more behind it? Yes. Should he get help for his mental/emotional issues? Yes. Should he have done it with more control and in private? Absolutely! But for Em to pretend that Hina didn't mess up and put herself in danger and detract from Rocky's rescue is unfair too. I don't know if it's how the character is written, directed,  or acted but she doesn't seem to like Sonny and whenever she's on screen I only get, "This is the employee after his job vibes." 

The show is still finding its footing but I really want it to be successful because it fills the Hawaii hole left by Hawaii 5-0 and NCIS: Hawaii.

Maybe Sonny should have driven a little slower.  Maybe he should have let Hina drive and he hang onto Rocky since he is presumably stronger.

I just don't understand why everyone is acting like Hina and Hina alone was responsible for the death.  It could have happened to any of them.

I'm glad that Will told Em that she should be the one to talk to Hina.  I'm glad that Em found her and I'm glad that Hina got some closure and the two of them had their own ceremony to honour Rocky.  Em is a good boss.

On the other hand, Sonny sucks donkey balls as a boss.  He should have taken a leave of absence after Zion died.  He ditches work to go ride motorbikes with his friend, acts irresponsible to the point where the friend leaves him.  Then runs off the road, crashes his bike, and walks home.  Still not liking him or his issues and honestly don't care about him.  

Em and the fire captain were obviously going to be at the same restaurant that Will and his rich fiance were going to.  Seems like Em and fire captain have gone on quite a number of dates, I was actually expecting him to propose to her.  Of course the show is going to play up this triangle, but I like both Will and Em so I don't mind seeing more of them.

That👆 was definitely it. Sonny ordered Hina not to go after Rocky because Sonny knew it was too dangerous, but Hina jumped into the surf anyway. 
Nobody blamed Hina for Rocky's death. 
While yelling at her might not have been effective, a lot of others in Sonny's position of authority would have fired her on the spot. It's not like Hina has the experience of Em or even Laka where such a mistake might be overlooked as an aberration rather than a characteristic indicating she is not cut out for the work.

On the other hand, there's a reason people use the term "rookie mistake."
