Exactly. I tune in for the wacky, start-of-season, multi-parters, and then wind up staying for dreary, low-budget soap operas that follow.
I might bale out this year after this arc is over. 
Of course, I'll be sure to check my parachute before I bale. 
And maybe Boeing planes should pass out parachutes to all passengers and have them put them on.

If anything, there were complaints that last season was too focused on character stories and barely had any rescues after the big 3-parter.

This episode wasn't as strong for me as the premiere because that had some more intentional silliness to it and more of the cast I know and love while this was primarily Athena-focused with people I don't know.  Hopefully, next week will be a blend of the two.

A similar story happened in 2018 over the Himalayas to  Sichuan Airlines Flight 8633. A movie on the incident The Captain is on Tubi.

Emergency did a couple of airplane crashes back in the day. Of course being Jack Webb going for realism gave us mutual support from other fire departments and that kept the costume department of the studio busy. Bobby borrowing the fire engine  with the British actor playing an American did remind me that the engineer on Emergency was and actual reserve LA County  Firefighter Specialist.

I generally only watch the season openers unless something really catches me during a promo, after a meh bee-nado this episode had me going

I gave a WTF when the kid went back to his seat after pointing out which read out was for airspeed.  Can Airplane  be shown anywhere today?

Fun fact: ED drugs were initially developed for treating cardiac-related illnesses.  So their use as ED drugs is actually the true side effect.

 I appreciate how much personality they manage to give the supporting cast in these episodes, the actors do a lot to make them feel real even for a short time in these crazy circumstances. I especially liked the older couple who's meds kept saving the day and the dog girl and anxious guy who have just has a very odd meet cute.  

To me that's always been this show's strength, the 911 vignettes.

I feel the same. For some reason it doesn't bother me that the show uses stuff like this for its premieres.
