The Envy Awards 2024: Easter eggs, soaps and the not-dead yet — TV’s top moments

Outrageous Costuming Award

Daniel Lawson, “Elsbeth” (CBS)

The actual Emmys have had a contemporary costume award since 2015, but let’s face it: They’re not looking for what “Elsbeth” has on offer. In this comedy-drama about a lawyer-turned-investigator, the biggest crime in any given episode is what its titular character puts on her body. Elsbeth Tascioni is a master of stripes with solids, oranges with reds, outrageous patterns and hats and gloves and no fewer than four tote bags or purses dangling from her person in any given episode. And she is glorious. This piece of witchery could have been pulled off only by a master, and the fact that Lawson comes out of the soap opera world and has been with the “Good Wife” universe for many years (where his outfits for other characters are simply divine) proves that he can expertly stroll all sides of the catwalk. Do they give Nobel Prizes for costumes?

A new season of CBS‘ Elsbeth means a new crop of superfun guest stars in (usually) killer roles — and TVLine has your exclusive first look at the Emmy Award and Tony Award winner who will get things rolling in the Season 2 premiere.

How does one follow up such a stellar slate? Press play above to watch an exclusive Season 2 teaser, which reveals the Only Murders in the Building vet who in the Season 2 premiere plays Phillip Cross, an obsessed opera lover driven to murder by… a ringing cell phone.

Season 2’s first guest star of course played lawyer/accountant Clarke Hayden in more than a dozen episodes of The Good Wife, but as with Linda Lavin, Elsbeth creators Robert and Michelle King have said they have no problem casting franchise vets in new, different roles.

Elsbeth (Oct. 17, CBS)

Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) is back on the case! The eccentric lawyer-turned-investigator may have a more permanent position at the NYPD, but now she must prove herself. “It’s not something many police precincts have in place, so it’s always a question of will she be able to hold down this particular job?” Preston says. In the season premiere,

Captain Charles Wallace (Wendell Pierce) and officer Kaya Blank (Carra Patterson) will need Elsbeth’s help on a case involving a disgruntled opera lover (guest star Nathan Lane).

“He’s one of our finest actors,” raves Preston. “He certainly understands genres like this that have a mixture of drama and comedy.” —A.Y.

I'm glad to see the rotating group of detectives is back. I was a little worried they were going to get rid of them and make Kaya the constant detective since the boss said she should think about becoming one.

I like Kaya a lot but I've also enjoyed many of the guest detectives.

https://collider.com/elsbeth-season-2-halloween-episode-images/

Quote

... Collider is thrilled to exclusively reveal some first-look sneak peeks at the October 31 episode, entitled "Devil's Night". In our first look photos, fans can get a glimpse at Brittany O'Grady's guest role in the series which, of course, stars Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, a sharp yet unconventional attorney who teams up with the NYPD to solve high-society crimes in New York. Her unique perspective and unorthodox methods make her an important cog in taking down the city’s most affluent criminals.

Spoiler

O'Grady stars as Mac, a former child star turned wild partygoer, who wakes up after a chaotic Halloween night with no memory of the evening’s events. As she pieces together her whereabouts, she becomes terrified that she may have committed a murder. Elsbeth (Preston) and her team dive into the mystery, retracing Mac’s steps to uncover the truth about what really happened during her Halloween escapades. Meanwhile, Captain Wagner (Wendell Pierce) grapples with the challenge of boosting low morale at the precinct amidst the chaos.

Elsbeth Casting News: Elsbeth Introduces Its First Crossover Character From The Good Wife
Jack Ori   October 11, 2024
https://www.tvfanatic.com/elsbeth-casting-news-elsbeth-introduces-its-first-crossover-character-from-the-good-wife/

Spoiler

Instead, Christian Borle will reprise his role as Carter Schmidt, a lawyer who often was an adversary of Alicia’s on The Good Wife.
*  *  *
It’s possible that the Good Wife alum could be a guest star who turns out to be a killer, but this doesn’t seem likely, as the logline for the episode mentions who Elsbeth suspects and it’s not him.

When a billionaire dies in a freak accident during a space training simulation, Elsbeth suspects a fellow magnate and wannabe astronaut with a grudge named Neal (Robert Riggle) is responsible. Also, Elsbeth’s day is turned upside down when she is reunited with a former colleague from Chicago.

Do new episodes usually appear on Paramount+ the same day they air on CBS?

No, typically they appear the next day. Sometimes at 2-3 in the morning, other times later in the day.

There may be exceptions, but every time I've tried, it's always next day.

‘Elsbeth’ Showrunner Jonathan Tolins Teases ‘More Surprises’ for Season 2 (Exclusive)
Elsbeth Season 2 premieres on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
By Megan Behnke   October 15, 2024
https://popculture.com/tv-shows/news/elsbeth-showrunner-jonathan-tolins-teases-more-surprises-for-season-2-exclusive/

Quote

PopCulture: What can you tell me about Season 2 of Elsbeth?

Jonathan Tolins: We’re trying to build on what we started in Season 1. We have fabulous guest stars coming. We’ve added a few characters and complications to Elsbeth’s life in New York. We have some things that happened in her career life in Chicago, and we’re gonna find out what led her to change her whole life and come to New York. We’re building on what we did, finding more great roles, segments of New York’s society to explore, we’re having a good time.And we’re also doing a lot more playing with the form. So for people who think that it’s always you see the murderer, you know who it is. There are gonna be more and more surprises and sort of variations on that format. So not in the first episode, I should say.
*  *  *
PC: Going back to Elsbeth, with her assignment with the D.O.J. seemingly in the past now and her staying with the NYPD, what can we expect from her for Season 2 as far as her relationships and her job go?

Tolins: She is now in Noonan’s old office,which you got at the end of last season. But Noonan is replaced by a new lieutenant who actually would love to get that office, and that’s the why, you know when this stuff happens that comes back from her past. It’s a wrinkle that makes her afraid that the job she started to put together for herself may be in jeopardy.
*  *  *
PC: Is there anything that you’re excited to explore in Season 2 now that Elsbeth has really gotten off the ground?

Tolins: Yes. We are bringing in some other characters who are important to her. We are also bringing in a villain who will last beyond one episode, which I’m excited about. And mostly, we’ve just been given this incredible playpen to write stories and murder mysteries that touch on things that we find absurd about life now in New York or things that are just interesting to us. So we’re very lucky. In the writers’ room, we say all the time we are fully aware with how lucky we are to have these jobs, working on a show that’s on the air and doing pretty well, and with these incredible actors and getting to work with these amazing guest artists that we managed to lure in week after week.

PC: What else can you tease about Season 2?

Tolins: We have incredible guest stars and there’s one character that people have been asking, “Will we ever meet that character?” and the answer is, “Yeah, I think so.”

Wendell Pierce appeared on Be My Guest with Ina Garten this morning.  He is so mellow and delightful.  I was disappointed that he never mentioned Elsbeth.  Would have been a nice opportunity for the show.  I haven’t seen him in his many other credits.

I have seen him in numerous other things he has done and I always recognize him.  The funny thing about him on Be My Guest is that I don't know that I would have recognized him, other than his voice.  There's just something so different about his 'real' demeanor vs. the characters he plays that I don't always get from actors.  It was a fun interview.

Elsbeth Sneak Peek: The Good Wife Vet Issues Ominous Warning (Exclusive)
By Vlada Gelman   October 23, 2024
https://tvline.com/previews/elsbeth-season-2-episode-2-good-wife-guest-star-carter-video-1235355363/

Spoiler

At the end of last week’s Season 2 premiere, the titular lawyer was told by an unseen voice to get in a black SUV. The mystery man returns in this Thursday’s episode (CBS, 10/9c), which reveals that he is Carter Schmidt (played by Christian Borle), a lawyer who often went up against Alicia Florrick in the courtroom on The Good Wife. (In addition to appearing on five episodes of The Good Wife, Borle was also in three installments of The Good Fight.)
*  *  *
In the above exclusive sneak peek, Carter issues a warning to Elsbeth concerning their past. “I’m sure the NYPD views rules of confidentiality just as seriously as we do,” he says. After Carter clarifies that the “we” refers to “the firm,” he adds, “If a former colleague who was handsomely paid for her work violated that confidence, the firm would exact retribution.”

When Elsbeth questions what kind of retribution, Carter ominously replies, “Financial, professional. Other things I’m not thinking about right now. As an old friend from Chicago, I wanted you to know.”

24 | On Elsbeth, couldn’t have Rob Riggle’s character acted at least a little upset about the murder, just to throw the authorities off his trail? Did this week’s episode, far more than usual, completely telegraph how the killer would be found out? And was the flirtation between Elsbeth and fire marshal Jake legitimately hot (no pun intended)? ?

Carrie Preston on how playing ‘Elsbeth’ for 14 years is ‘definitely a gift’
Marcus James Dixon   November 12, 2024
https://www.goldderby.com/feature/carrie-preston-elsbeth-video-interview-1205996365/

Quote

“We have twice as many episodes this season as we had in Season 1,” the actress states about this year’s 20-episode order. “So that means twice as many really cool story lines that we get to explore, but also twice as many guest stars, which I think is kind of the heart of our show. The people that are coming on and playing with us [are incredible], so I was looking forward to seeing who was gonna join us for Season 2 in that capacity.”
*  *  *
Speaking of guest stars, Preston’s real-life husband Michael Emerson will appear in the second season as a judge, which gets Elsbeth “back in the courtroom.” She jokes that she had to really “work with him” to “understand this medium called television” and the producers “took a chance on him.” All kidding aside, Emerson (who won two Emmys for playing villainous characters on “The Practice” and “Lost”) has a “juicy part” in Season 2 because, “On our show, if you’re the special guest star, you’re generally up to no good,” Preston teases.
*  *  *
Also in our exclusive video interview, Preston talks about filming “Elsbeth” in the heart of New York City, she recalls playing Emerson’s character’s mother on “Lost,” and she answers our question about whether she’d like to do a crossover with Kathy Bates‘ “Matlock” since both characters are solving crimes on CBS.
