S49.E08: Kate McKinnon / Billie Eilish

Well, that was more hit or miss than I would've liked, but it was still head and shoulders above the last couple of shows.  The cold open wasn't great but at least it was a change from politics.  Kate McKinnon's monologue was funny until Kristen Weig and Maya Rudolph showed up.

Sketch-wise, the ABBA Christmas album was by far the best, followed by the orca rampage at the North Pole (still not as good as Eddie Murphy's polar bear attack), Pongo, the Tampon farm and the gift exchange.  The other ones were lackluster but okay.

Weekend Update was really funny, and I loved adding Haddy Davis to the annual joke exchange.  Colin having to tell the most racist jokes in front of her added to his yearly torture.

Billie Eilish sucked, but I expected that.

Jacob Elordi is on Euphoria, he plays Elvis in the new movie about Priscilla Presley, and he's also in the movie Saltburn.

I'm aware of him, but don't think he's anything special, and I saw Saltburn (didn't like it but then I was only there for one person and his scenes were few and over before they left Oxford).  But that doesn't mean he might not be a good host.  Sometimes the most unexpected people turn out to be really funny on SNL.

Meet Me in St. Louis: First Cass Elliot, now Judy Garland. Chloe Troast is certainly swinging for the fences. Honestly this could've been better. If anything, Kate wasn't unhinged enough. And that's in a sketch where she chainsaws a snowman that still had a person in it.

I found it amusing but was annoyed (probably unreasonably) that the song "Judy" was singing was the wrong damned song.  It should've been the very melancholy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

Dr. Hannah not only wouldn’t fist bump with Jost, she avoided him at the end. In on the bit or reflective of Che’s killer black widow “joke?”

I think she was in on the bit.

I found Mya and Kristen insufferable in the ABBA bit. Can they do anything and not make it all about them?

I sort of agree with you, and yet I laughed like a loon during the whole thing because it was both so demented and so ABBA.

Yea, I like it better when she sings her own songs that her brother writes for her. I didn't think her cover of Merry Little Christmas was anything special. (Also, I hate that singers always do the rewritten version and not the original.) As a singer, I don't think she's in the league of Linda Ronstadt.

I think her brother is the talented one and she's just along for the ride.  And likes being famous.

It's from the lyrics to Dancing Queen.

I knew that but what I didn't understand why in the skit they kept mentioning 17 over and over and over. They sounded obsessed to me and that's not a good look for people their age. Not unless they're singing about their grandkids or themselves. Yeah, I'm overthinking it.

She was an actress so she likely was not only in on the joke, she was probably told by Lorne to stay in character.

Billie Eilish works better for me as an actress rather than a singer. I think she has good timing and natural acting chops.

I've had pet guinea pigs and they all learned to squeak when I opened the fridge to feed them parsley.

Hope all those sweet cats got adopted, if they were up for adoption.

Billie’s a good actress!  Her mom is an actress, I remember her from Six Feet Under.

Aww that’s sweet.

I figured the cats were professionals, but they looked SO nervous, and I was worried they were about to scratch Kate or Billie.  I think the sketch is funny but I don’t like when they use live animals…

Except for the VERY old sketch from the 80s(?) with Dana Carvey as “Massive Head Wound Harry!”  The dog licking and kind of chewing the “wound,” so gross and hilarious.  Now that’s when SNL was funny!
