I love Atwater in that big brother mentor type role. With Halstead gone hopefully we get more Atwater.

That Torres kid might have a screw loose.

And next week looks like a Hailey episode I'm already annoyed.

Way too many people are busy whining about Halstead that they couldn't even appreciate what a great episode this was.

Torres and Atwater are such a great pairing. It does something for both of them. Torres gets a mentor and one that can actually get him, and Atwater gets to do and be what we didn't have. I know people feel like that makes Torres' story redundant and too similar to Atwater's but it actually means we get to see the distinction and a bit of full circle.

There were just so many great points in this episode that are probably underrated or won't get the credit that it deserves. Torres and his mother having a full conversation in Spanish made me emotional. Antonio didn't get to lean into his identity and who he was as much back then...Kevin gets to when it's convenient but then there's never the nuance that it deserves and he always had to do it alone even with Antonio there or whomever. We didn't get enough with Rojas.

I feel like they handled the introduction of this character well enough and then gave us this centric early enough where he feels like a fully realized character which has him light-years ahead of characters from the past like Rojas and Rixton.

Kevin is just set up so perfectly for making detective. Like he is the one who always suffered the most narratively because he didn't have the romantic connection to a colleague. But we really got see and appreciate how seasoned he is now and we were with him for that journey since his uniformed days and when he joined Intelligence. So the fact that Dante's story and presence just naturally extends to Kevin and sadly with Jay gone, Kevin and who he has always been as a more tempered and consistent moral compass... like I was digging and seeing all of that.

I think I remember the show runners saying somebody was gonna make detective this season and I thin it's gonna be Atwater. Jay was never the moral compass on this show that was always Atwater. Antonio was in the very early years but it's been Atwater for a while now.  And in the midst of all this I would to see Kev get another chance at love because he's had bad luck in that department.

I really enjoyed this, I've felt the shift since Eid has left with regards to the new direction the show is taking. It's not straight up flipping the switch but the storylines/cases are definitely better. The myopic episode format worked in this case so we could get to know Torres & boy did we & it was so much better than Rojas when it was all about being a 'super badass cop' from the start. So well done to the showrunner.

So Myopics can work, they just need to stop using them constantly. In saying that what it did set up was that Halstead wasn't missed at all because we are now used to have episodes where half the team is not involved. Minimal Mopey deserted wife was also a bonus & the show did not suffer one bit not having the Whitestead's shoved into everything.

Torres for me.... there is still enough mystery about him, this told us a lot but not very much at all. They did a great job with him in this episode however I want to see how he does around the fringes. I hope it's not all or nothing with him, which they have the tendency to do.

Atwater as his mentor makes the most sense. I never saw pretty white boy Halstead as a good mentor for anyone, especially someone who's not from his side of the tracks. Halstead had always been inherently prejudiced against those less fortunate or who weren't just black or white. I think what we can get out of this partnership is actually seeing what it was like for Atwater in his early years as a cop, while they've shown glimpses of it, it was already once he'd done the early work so I feel this can show us both stories for both characters and I am really looking forward to that.

LOVED seeing Atwater in the mentoring role. He's really good at it. And it's nice to see him do more besides hanging up pictures and kicking in doors.

I thought Voight looked really attractive in his Levi jeans and Black shirt. Weird I know, but maybe it's because he was dressed differently.

Kim and Ruzek were forgettable in this episode. Hailey too, but I'm not complaining.

Really solid episode. Good storyline.

5021 George is out. It’s 5021 Ocean now. Coincidental timing.

Our first Torres centric episode and it’s good. This man is “all heart” and wanting to do the right things.

Great pairing with Kevin. Torres is in a good hand. Kevin’s struggles as a black cop will make him a good mentor and protector. Their arcs of combining both worlds are similar but not entirely the same. Kevin has to keep Torres away from Hailey’s poison.

Torres rushing home to his mama, afraid something bad has happened, that was intense.

Torres is in the show for only 5 minutes and he already has a love interest while Kevin is still waiting and waiting…

The fight scene in the end was brutal, shocking and also concerning. Why he kept beating Ramiro when he’s already down? Hope this is a one time thing of letting the steam off. It’s too early and too cliché to be having Torres roughing up people ala Voight at this point of time.

Dante Torres - a man who’s willing to get his hands dirty while keeping his white shirt clean! 🤨

I personally never felt like Jay was the moral compass. It really was always Atwater who has most consistently carried that role and is the cleanest of all of them. But the SHOW liked to sell the narrative that Jay was. It never made sense to me AT ALL and used to make me roll my eyes. But that's whatever.

If it's guaranteed that someone makes detective than it definitely has to be Kevin. Ain't no way it's not. Even last season when they bothered showing him he was serving detective goodness.

And I definitely need him with a real love interest. It's ridiculous and unrealistic as hell that that man has so much trouble in the love department..

The screams I scrumpt reading this... 🤣

But yeah. I'll just say that I concur. Kevin is a better fitting mentor for someone like Torres. It's genuinely nice to see two men of color in the unit after so long of Kevin being the token minority left in the wind and not having anyone to lean on. To this day Kevin's line of "we need more brothas in the unit" with Ruzek's "I'm your brother" is one of my fave Ruzwater moments.

It makes a world of difference when you have someone that can at least somewhat understand what you're going through and for both of their sakes i like that Kevin and Dante don't feel so alone in that regard. Halstead couldn't guide Dante through stuff like that. He never really got it. And he's certainly had some very obvious biases in the past to anyone who knows how to spot them. Hailey too. Ruzek has always felt more... authentic when it comes to getting some of that because you can tell he was other side of the tracks white boy who still had some issues too but still.

Twitter has been a cesspool of microaggressions when it comes to this character and it's really rubbed me the wrong way even thoughI'm not surprised. It's cool to see appreciation for the character and actor here.

My main take away was while Ramiro was getting beat down, his guys all just stood there watching like oh well, sucks to be him! I'm loving Torres, and much like the diner girl, I'm liking the white tee for him too! LOL! Torres is already 1000% more of an interesting character than any new cast additions in like 5 years, and I can't say I will miss Jay, he's been boring as all hell forever. Now if they would only ship his obnoxious brother off Chicago Med, I'd be rid of both of them.
