‘Agatha All Along’ Submits as Comedy Series for Awards Season, Hinting That More Seasons Could Come (EXCLUSIVE)
By Clayton Davis   Nov 4, 2024

Under the banner of Marvel Television Studios, the hit new spin-off series “Agatha All Along,” starring Kathryn Hahn, will be submitted in the comedy categories for the upcoming awards season, including the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and next year’s Emmy race, Variety has learned exclusively. The move aligns “Agatha” in a competitive lineup, as it will face acclaimed comedies like ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s “The Bear” and HBO/Max’s “Hacks.”

This decision places Hahn in the running against heavyweights such as Jean Smart, Quinta Brunson, and Ayo Edebiri — who have each won the TV comedy actress race for their respective shows over the past three years. For Hahn, who’s never been nominated for a Globe, a mention could be pivotal as she seeks to make a mark at next year’s Emmys ceremony.

I'm not sure why it's on YouTube and not Disney+

This is definitely odd. It popped up in my YouTube feed and I immediately checked Disney+ to find it there because I'd rather watch without ads, but it was nowhere to be found on D+. I went back to YT to watch, annoyed that I'd have to watch with ads, but there weren't any. 😲

It's a great episode of Assembled, BTW. The segment about set construction and decoration is very interesting. The absolute joy of the actors being able to work on a fully practical set is very apparent. You can see how it made an impact on their performances.

Yeah the making off was great.

I was reminded of the breakdown Ian McKellen had during the filming of the Hobbit, when he couldn't take solely acting against a green screen anymore, never even seeing his co-stars. (This is the best video I can find, there used to be better ones, but they seem to be lost.)

But I was reminded of it, because here it seems to have been the complete opposite. All the actors actually became so close, they called themselves a coven and I thuroughly believe that wasn't just some marketing spiel. Because shortly after wrapping, Aubrey Plaza moved in with Patti LuPone and Patti made her soup every day. Also most of the effects were practical. I noticed during the show, but a lot of them I didn't even think about, because they were just so well done. I only thought about them when they were pointed out during the making off. That also must help the actors a lot to get into the spirit of things.

The parts about the balad were very interesting. I still can't get it out of my head. Those two composers are pure evil. But I guess we knew that since the time they wrote "let it go". Love them and what they do.

Contains spoilers for Agatha All Along...

Why Kathryn Hahn was so game to play a witchy woman in ‘Agatha All Along’
By Max Gao   Nov. 26, 2024

Quote

In the summer of 2021, a few months after “WandaVision” premiered to acclaim, Hahn learned that Schaeffer was developing a continuation of Agatha’s story. In their earliest conversations, Hahn and Schaeffer knew they wanted to maintain the character’s “acerbic, sarcastic, self-involved” demeanor while placing her in a position where she begrudgingly needs to form a coven to travel the fabled “Witches’ Road” and reclaim the power that Wanda had stripped of her at the end of “WandaVision.”
*  *  *
In the process, “Agatha” serves as an origin story of sorts for the wicked witch. The show reveals that Agatha’s nihilistic malevolence stems from her tortured relationship with her mother, who told her she was inherently and irredeemably evil and tried to kill her with her own coven. She also feels tremendous shame and guilt over being unable to save her son, Nicky, whose life she had attempted to extend by killing other witches. A master of communicating inner turmoil with a single freighted look, Hahn is able to offer gripping, albeit fleeting, windows into Agatha’s vulnerability.
*  *  *
Speaking again by phone a few days after the “Agatha” finale — which ends with Agatha sacrificing her life and agreeing to act as a kind of spiritual guide to Wanda’s son, Billy a.k.a. Wiccan (Joe Locke), as he searches for his missing twin brother — Hahn insists that she has yet to have any conversations about her future in the MCU.

“Even though obviously now Billy/Wiccan is not her son, there is some sort of hope for her that she’s able to maybe do for him what she couldn’t do for Nicky. I think they do make a great team. Of course, I love this part and I love Joe Locke madly, and we’ll see what the future holds,” Hahn says. “In my mind, this was a beautiful and satisfying way to say goodbye to this incredible character I had to play.”

15 Agatha All Along (Disney+)
...
The words “Kathryn Hahn in a leading role” are enough to get us watching just about anything — and Hahn, in her second turn as witch Agatha Harkness, surpassed even our highest expectations with her relentlessly funny, yet surprisingly tender, portrayal. But Disney+’s WandaVision spinoff also made room for a compelling new coven (played by one of the year’s most stacked ensembles), a promising addition to the Marvel universe (via Joe Locke’s Teen), a bittersweet love story, and more of the inventive, format-breaking storytelling that EP Jac Schaeffer first gave us in WandaVision. Should the opportunity arise, we’d gladly take another trip down, down, down the Witches’ Road. — Rebecca Iannucci

Lilia, Agatha All Along
...
There was at least a silver lining to Lilia’s demise: The episode in which it happened, “Death’s Hand in Mine,” was one of the year’s most inventive and moving on any TV show. But even though Agatha‘s seventh installment gave us Patti LuPone’s best work (and a truly gorgeous, slow-motion death scene), it took our breath away to realize that Lilia’s tarot-centric trial on the Witches’ Road had an unavoidably fatal end.

Kathryn Hahn, Agatha All Along
...
We thought we’d seen the full spectrum of Hahn’s talents when she first portrayed Agatha Harkness — but, of course, the actress outdid herself when it came time to lead her own spinoff. And we’re not just talking about Hahn’s comedy chops, though her line readings and physical choices elevated every episode. Rather, we were most struck by Agatha’s delicate moments: her hints of genuine longing for Rio; the glimpses of grief over her son’s death; and her surprising — ill-advised, even! — protectiveness over Teen. Without some vulnerability from Agatha, we’d hardly be invested in her Witches’ Road journey; Hahn understood those stakes, thus conjuring one of the MCU’s most indelible performances. — R.I.

The Costume Designers Guild Awards nominations are out and Daniel Selon got two (!) nominations for Agatha All Along. He's nominated in Contemporary Television for episode 1 and in Sci-Fi/Fantasy for episode 4. I don't know how they decide these categories or how exactly they judge the costuming. I'd prefer episode 2 over episode 1 for contemporary because the attention to detail and care put into their "road" looks is so phenomenal. But maybe those are considered in episode 4 for the scenes before and after the trial. And those 70s looks should be considered in the Period Television category, they're not really Sci-Fi or Fantasy. But I am not an expert on any of this and I'm glad the show is getting recognized and I wish it all the awards.

You can’t really go wrong when you’ve got Kathryn Hahn as a power-hungry witch, but Agatha was even more fun than we anticipated, beginning with its pitch-perfect Mare of Easttown send-up. Hahn and a revelatory Joe Locke made for an unexpected and delightful comedy duo; Agatha’s coven, namely SNL‘s Sasheer Zamata as Jennifer Kale, landed those Marvel one-liners with impeccable timing; and Debra Jo Rupp reminded us why she needs a role in any TV comedy, no matter how short-lived.

Talking about playing a trump card. With her triumphant reveal of the Tower card, upright, Patti Lupone’s Lilia set in motion just that — an inversion of the castle in which the Salem Seven had cornered her, sending the septet of witches (and a selfless Lilia herself) oh-so-slowly falling, upwards, to their deaths on the swords that’d been dangling from the ceiling.

Agatha and Teen, Agatha All Along

Marvel Studios sure knows how to pair up a compelling odd couple, and they got it right once again with Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha and Joe Locke’s Teen. Right away, the duo had an easy comedic chemistry — Agatha and Teen’s early efforts to recruit a coven made for some of Agatha’s funniest scenes — and they sustained that on-screen magic even when Agatha and Teen’s trust in each other ebbed. It’s no wonder the show found a way to reunite these characters in the season finale, even after Agatha’s demise; here’s hoping we see more of their team-up somewhere in the MCU. — Rebecca Iannucci

There are complicated relationships, and then there are “falling in love with Death incarnate” levels of complicated. At first, we thought Agatha and Rio’s love was just garden-variety toxic — the sort of twisted, isn’t-it-hot-that-we-want-each-other-dead dynamic to which Agatha would be understandably drawn. But their relationship was ultimately much deeper, and more bittersweet, tasked as Rio was with eventually claiming Agatha’s life after taking Agatha’s young son away years prior. Yeah, it’s the kind of stuff you can’t solve in couples therapy — but at least we were treated to some rare LGBTQ+ representation in the Marvel world. — Rebecca Iannucci

‘Subscribers Were Overwhelmed’: How Disney (Finally) Made Its Streaming Business Profitable

Alan, managing Marvel is a big part of your job. I wrote recently about Agatha All Along, which cost, I think by your own admission, less than any other Marvel show before. Both you and Bob have talked about capping Marvel shows at two a year, but if budgets can be kept in check without impacting quality, might you be open to revisiting that limit?
Bergman
: Well, Agatha was certainly a big win for us, and widened out the audience that watches the Marvel titles. The movies have primarily been more male than female, and Agatha gave us an opportunity to try to hit the female audience more as well. As it relates to the number of titles, I don’t think we’re going to go beyond — at least I don’t have any plans to go beyond —  the two a year at this point. But, you know, you never know. It just depends on what creative comes up as we look at each of our development titles.
