This year’s festival opens with a gala at the guitar-shaped Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and a screening of director Ash Avildsen’s “Queen of the Ring,” the story of pro wrestler Mildred Burke (played by Emily Bett Rickards), the first-ever, million-dollar earning female athlete.

emilybett Tomorrow, Queen of the Ring—the story of Mildred Burke, wrestling’s first female champion—comes to life on the big screen for the opening night of the Florida Film Festival. 🎥

Mildred’s story is as powerful and relevant as ever. She wasn’t just a champion in the ring; she was a fierce advocate for equality in a world that constantly told her “no.”

What Mildred fought for—challenging limits and redefining what a woman could achieve—paved the way for the women of today. Her fight is far from over. We honor her legacy every time a woman steps into the ring, onto a stage, or into any arena where she’s told her rights don’t matter.

Her strength and resilience continue to inspire me, and I hope her story does the same for you. Where there are people like Mildred, there will always be hope.

Sending love and strength from both Mildred and myself.

If you’re in Florida, I’ll see you at the premiere on Friday! ❤️

This movie sounds really good and EBR has been getting great reviews for her performance - including the one below from The Hollywood Reporter (unfortunately, it's only being screened on the festival circuit right now)...

‘Queen of the Ring’ Review: Emily Bett Rickards Brings Soul and Strength to Female Wrestling Biopic
By Frank Scheck   November 18, 2024
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/queen-of-the-ring-film-review-1236063810/

Quote

Based on Jeff Leen’s extravagantly titled 2009 book The Queen of the Ring: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Making of an American Legend (try fitting that on a marquee), the film stars Emily Bett Rickards (Arrow) in a breakout performance as Burke. We first see her as an unwed teenage mother working as a waitress in a Kansas diner under the watchful eye of her mother (Cara Buono). But Millie, who possesses a formidable muscularity, has dreams of becoming an entertainer. And since she can’t sing or dance, she figures that wrestling is her way out of the boonies.
*  *  *
... The wrestling sequences are particularly visceral, with the actors, particularly Rickards, exhibiting such a fierce physical commitment that it’s easy to imagine that there must have been plenty of offscreen nursing care. (The filmmaker might have inherited his talent for fight scenes, since his father John Avildsen’s directing credits include Rocky and three Karate Kid films. One of the stars of the latter series, Martin Kove, plays a colorful supporting role here.)

.... But it’s ultimately Rickards, who handles the intense physical and emotional demands of her role with consummate skill, that gives the film its heart and soul.

From Brandon Routh panel on Nov. 10...

-- Q: "If you had to work with any of the actors from any of the other DC shows or films you've worked on, who would they be and why?"
BR:
"I always enjoyed working with Grant Gustin... I think one of the most fun episodes we got to do was the one I did on The Flash, Season 9 or t0, where we have a battle outside and we're kind of fighting together, just Flash and Atom, that was kinda sweet. Um, I always loved working with Emily and, you know, Emily Bett, and so I didn't get much opportunity after I left Arrow to do that. So I want to work with her more."

-- Q: Was it sort of an immediate like camaraderie when you met everybody [on the Arrow set] or was it something - ... takes time to kind of get to know each other?"
BR:
"It only took a moment because the way that show and most television - television is shot is that if - unless you're in the scene with a person, you don't meet them and talk. You may not see them for a while. And it's also a very heavy set and drama, except for the scenes with Emily and I usually together. We were doing more comedy. So, uh, it took a little bit of time of me getting to know - and, you know, coming in Season 3 to, you know, meet everybody. But then, yeah, when we come to these events and everything, it's fantastic.

St. Louis International Film Festival 2024 Review! Director Ash Avildsen scores a pinfall victory with Queen of the Ring. ....
*  *  *
Emily Bett Rickards plays Burke and not only looks like the wrestler but is not afraid to take bumps. Her performance is up there among the year’s best by an actress.
*  *  *
Don’t make the mistake of thinking Queen of the Ring is just a wrestling movie, because it’s so much more. It’s not only a period piece, but it also touches on sexism, racism, and spousal abuse. Burke fights for everything she has and earned throughout her life inside and outside of the squared circle.
*  *  *
While Avildsen admits that the book featured so much more on Burke than he could include in the film, including a lot of the domestic abuse she suffered at the hands of Wolfe, he does a fine job showcasing the grit and glamour of women’s pro wrestling during that time period. He also shows what unfolds behind the scenes of pro wrestling when the crowd is not around, or the cameras are not on. This makes the film that much more captivating. The director’s love for pro wrestling is evident in the film, as he not only crafts a fine film, but gives Burke full credit for changing the landscape of women’s wrestling forever.

Queen of the Ring Review: Wrestling Through History

Emily Bett Rickards has a standout performance, embodying Burke’s ferocious determination and complex personal life. ....
*  *  *
Emily Bett Rickards transforms Millie Burke, a struggling single mother, into a wrestling phenomenon with astonishing nuance. Her performance is a masterclass in combining raw physical prowess and intense emotional sensitivity. Rickards doesn’t just play Burke; she becomes her, expressing the fighter’s strong drive and underlying vulnerability. Whether wrestling in carnival rings or negotiating complex personal relationships, she exudes compelling authenticity, making Burke’s journey viscerally real.
*  *  *
“Queen of the Ring”‘s wrestling sequences erupt authentically, leaving audiences breathless. These are raw, visceral accounts of human determination, not just scripted conflicts. Emily Bett Rickards turns every match into a symbolic war against societal restraints, with her physical dedication so strong that fans can nearly feel the impact of each slam and throw.
*  *  *
"Queen of the Ring" goes beyond the traditional sports biopic, presenting a powerful narrative about societal transformation and one amazing woman's journey. Ash Avildsen has created a film that grapples with complicated themes of gender, ambition, and personal perseverance, anchored by Emily Bett Rickards's remarkable performance as Mildred Burke. The film does a fantastic job of rescuing a forgotten pioneer from historical oblivion, portraying Burke as an athlete and a complex woman who challenged every barrier imposed upon her. Visually spectacular, emotionally deep, and energetically delivered, the film gives life to a unique story that deserves to be shared. While some pacing flaws and narrative compressions reduce the overall impact, the film's dedication to authenticity and powerful storytelling is obvious. It honors a trailblazing athlete who elevated wrestling from a marginalized spectacle to a platform for female empowerment.

PROS
√  Exceptional lead performance by Emily Bett Rickards
√  Visually stunning cinematography
√  Authentic period recreation
√  Powerful narrative about female empowerment
√  Dynamic wrestling sequences
√  Nuanced exploration of 1930s-1950s social dynamics

CONS
X  Occasional narrative pacing issues
X  Some historical details condensed for dramatic effect
X  Potential over-romanticization of certain personal relationships

'Autumn and the Black Jaguar' Trailer Teases a Sweet Friendship in the Amazon

https://movieweb.com/video/autumn-and-the-black-jaguar-trailer/

Quote

Check out the trailer for 'Autumn and the Black Jaguar' starring Lumi Pollack and Emily Bett Rickards, in theaters Jan. 17, 2025.

'Autumn and the Black Jaguar' follows Autumn (Pollak) who, having spent her early childhood in the Amazon rainforest, formed a friendship with a jaguar cub she named Hope. Now a teenager in New York City, she learns her childhood village in the Amazon is under threat from animal traffickers, so she decides she must return to the Amazon to save her beloved jaguar. Anja (Bett Rickards), her endearingly clumsy biology teacher, learns of her plan and attempts to dissuade her, but ends up joining her on her journey to reunite with Hope and save her from those who seek to destroy the rainforest and its wildlife.

In making the film, the filmmakers used real jaguars to play Hope. The jaguars were rescued from wild animal breeders, taken care of by on-set animal coordinators, and now live in an animal sanctuary. Before filming began, both Lumi Pollak and Airam Camacho, who plays Young Autumn, spent about a year playing and imprinting with the two jaguars to build the bond you see between Hope and Autumn in the film.

I Think I Know Exactly When Arrow Went Off the Rails (& Its Not Season 3)
Matthew Flynn   Published 3 days ago
https://www.cbr.com/arrow-went-off-the-rails-season-5/

Quote

Many fans view Arrow season three as the point at which the series started to lose its footing. However, while season three clearly wasn’t as good as its predecessors, it did have some redeeming qualities. The show was also able to correct its course in season four by making a return to the basics which made its first two seasons so great. It was in season five that Arrow truly lost its way and reached an unfortunate point of no return.
*  *  *
Arrow's season five is when the show really reaches its point of no return. In previous seasons, flashbacks to Oliver’s past had been meaningful and interesting. They shed important light on how the rich playboy had become the unstoppable vigilante. However, the flashbacks in season five, to Oliver’s time in Russia, are a drag. This, and many subsequent flashbacks, come across as filler attempting to create parallels between Oliver’s present and past. Instead, they often come across as unnecessary or simply confusing.

The scattered storytelling that plagued some of season three returns as Team Arrow expands and plotlines become predictable. Unnecessary additions to Oliver’s team, like Wild Dog, Artemis, and Rag Man, bogged down any team chemistry that had developed over previous seasons, moving away from a solo hero show and more to one about a team. Meanwhile, obvious conflicts arise as the Green Arrow attempts to reconcile his status as both vigilante and Star City mayor.

As if new team members weren’t enough, Arrow also began to focus too much on attempting to unify all the CW Arrowverse shows. A four-part crossover event, “Invasion!” ran through Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. It became clear to viewers that in order to understand all of what happens in Arrow, they must be at least casually aware of what happens in three other shows. Fortunately, Arrow was able to bring things together at the end of season five for what was the most exciting season finale of the show’s eight seasons. However, by this time, the die was cast. Arrow had lost its way and given in to fractured plotlines and a tendency to be more concerned with how it fit in with the other shows in the Arrowverse — faults that would continue throughout the remainder of the show’s run.

EBR's other new movie, Autumn and the Black Jaguar, will be released in US theaters on Jan. 17 - here's a critical review...

Autumn and the Black Jaguar
By Daniel Rester   January 16, 2025
https://filmthreat.com/reviews/autumn-and-the-black-jaguar/

Quote

Autumn and the Black Jaguar, directed by Gilles de Maistre and written by Prune de Maistre, feels like a 1990s Disney family movie mixed with Romancing the Stone. It has illogical plot turns, and hit-and-miss acting, but its friendly vibes and beautiful locations go a long way. Plus, any film with a cute baby jaguar gets bonus points.

Lumi Pollack plays Autumn Edison, who grew up in the Amazon, where she often played with a jaguar cub named Hope. As a teen, she resides in America with her dad, Saul (Paul Greene). Autumn sets out to rescue Hope when she learns that the cat could be in danger from animal traffickers. Her biology teacher, Anja (Emily Bett Rickards), tries to stop the girl from leaving the country, only to end up on the plane with her (why didn’t she just call the cops?). Once in the Amazon, the two search for Hope as Autumn rediscovers her childhood home.

Gilles de Maistre directs Autumn and the Black Jaguar with a heavy hand. His message against animal abuse comes to the point where Anja speaks to a community on TV and directly looks at the camera (aka the audience). Instead of letting the central relationships do the work, the film falls back on such preachy methods at times.

But Pollack and Rickards have decent chemistry. Autumn becomes annoying on occasion, as she’s the cliched blonde character in a pink shirt and heels who is agoraphobic and frantic. Rickards is fun at times, but at other points, she overdoes it. Unfortunately, Greene gives a stilted performance but does derail the overall impact too much. Airam Camacho is adorable as a younger version of Autumn, going on adventures with her feline friend in the forest.

Autumn and the Black Jaguar is a sweet film for families, especially young girls. There isn’t a subtle bone in its body, and some of the acting choices are poor, but it’s pleasant enough. Plus, it’s impossible not to smile at a girl playing with a growling little jaguar cub.

Emily Bett Rickards talks about Autumn and the Black Jaguar, Arrow and much more!

-- When asked about preparing to play different characters (from Arrow to Queen of the Ring to Autumn and the Black Jaguar), EBR said that you have to "get out of your own way." She also said that, when you're building a character, "you have to have your truth be there." Her character in Jaguar had a "very severe fear of leaving the house." Both the mental or emotional and physical aspects of the character have to be together to build one full character. When you're shooting scenes out of order, you have to know where your character is coming from in that particular scene.

-- When asked when it began sinking in how big Arrow was (as a global TV phenomenon), EBR: "So far my experience with TV has been a different thing because it's sort of a low - I wouldn't say it's a slow burn - it's a gradual connection for the audience... As we see more of it, we feel more connected to these characters, to their lives, to their story. Like, something's happening to us where we're like growing with them. This is happening to them. Well, I just had something happen in my life where the emotion seems kind of the same. I don't know if a superhero and his own life is going out and taking care of business, but maybe, you know, a similar feeling that is associated on the screen. So I don't know if things ever - ever hit fully, you know? I like to work. I love to act. I want to know who the next character is. I'm just so excited. You know, that kind of feeling. So my energy is in there because I'm just hoping the stories are going off... I don't know if the size of something - I don't know if I can even think of size of something."

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Emily Bett Rickards approaches every acting role – whether it be a biology teacher who is way out of her element in “Autumn and the Black Jaguar” or the heroic Felicity Smoak in “Arrow” – the same way.

“I heard this saying. You can read a whole book, but if you don’t live one line you won’t learn anything from it. I think you could read a whole script or watch a whole movie but if you don’t feel one thing through it, then you might not move your needle,” Rickards says.

ickards comes to the movie role after finding great success on television playing a quick-witted computer expert/hacker in the series “Arrow.” Her character was only scheduled to be a guest at the beginning of the first season in 2012 but won over the producers and fans to become one of the most beloved characters during the eight-season run of the show.

“With Felicity, I didn’t know where she was going to end up, even until like the last few weeks of shooting,” Rickards says.

“I think they surprise you sometimes with where you have an intention of getting them for the effect of the story.”

Rickards approaches every acting role the same way and that is to treat them as being real people. The difference is that with a role based on a real person, she has resource material she can use to understand the background of the character.

“There’s text to read on them. You have pictures. I have a picture of Mildred. I could find her spine from that picture,” Rickards says. “I want to make sure that she feels respected and safe.

“Then there’s this way of sort of someone like Anja. She has a true fear of leaving the house and figuring out what that means for her. Finding out where that came from, you have to build that and really make that truthful.”

One thing that helped Rickards determine how to play her character in “Autumn and the Black Jaguar” was the filming location. The movie was shot in a Mexican forest during the summer.

As soon as she arrived on set, Rickards was given some very specific instructions. She was told to be cautious because it was tarantula season.

“I was like, there’s a season for that,” Rickards says with a laugh. “There were tarantulas everywhere. For the three weeks we were shooting, they were running across the road. On the side of the bathroom wall.”
