I would say it is worth seeing it on the big screen though - the visuals are better than the poorly made trailer will have you believe. I'm not shelling out money for it. If it ends up streaming on a service I already have, I might watch it then. Otherwise, when it hits cable. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/119619-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-202/page/2/#findComment-8531169
Anduin December 13, 2024 Author Share December 13, 2024 I saw it today. In a word: no. A longer review: full of people being too arrogant or dumb for their own good, and coming to stupid ends. Terrible writing. Pointless on every level. I doubt I'll ever watch it again. Furthermore, can we please stop adapting Tolkien? I haven't been happy since ROTK at the most generous take. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/119619-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-202/page/2/#findComment-8531569

On the plus side, its lackluster performance will probably be overshadowed by Kraven's dud of an opening. Rings of Power is flat out ridiculous as a Tolkien adaptation, and it sounds like this misses the mark too, although I haven't seen it. I will check it out on cable if it comes. But I've started to accept that these movie franchises that are adapted from source material that is highly regarded by me, are not going to be treated with the kind of respect that I have for them. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/119619-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-202/page/2/#findComment-8534480

DoctorAtomic December 16, 2024 Share December 16, 2024 What's it adapted from? I thought this was just an original story set in the Rings universe. Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/119619-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-202/page/2/#findComment-8534485

A bit in Appendix A of ROTK dealing with Rohan backstory. Yeah, they took a couple of paragraphs and turned it into a two hour movie. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/119619-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-202/page/2/#findComment-8534521
Anduin December 19, 2024 Author Share December 19, 2024 Some gripes that just popped into my head. Unless you're an olympic high jumper, you aren't leaping over a fully grown man. Even then, you aren't landing in fighting position. Further, real siege towers were coated in animal hides soaked in water to prevent fire attacks. Just the gaps in logic were really offputting. Then there's the obligatory fanservice. Orcs voiced by Merry and Pippin are looking for rings, you see. And for some reason Saruman turns up. They must have put Christopher Lee's voice together from other samples, because it didn't sound right. Yes, the timeline was right. Still didn't need it. Finally, they namedrop Gandalf. I don't like fanservice. It's distracting. That's all for now. Maybe more later. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/119619-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-202/page/2/#findComment-8536592

I can see it from Sauron's POV. Even though the the ring was lost, who knows where it may have turned up. Still, it's fanservice for the point of fanservice. baldryanr December 19, 2024 Share December 19, 2024 (edited) Saruman shows up because Tolkien said he went to Frealaf's coronation. That's not fan service, that's canon. Now, if Gandalf had shown up at some point, that would have been fan service. Grimnar December 23, 2024 Share December 23, 2024 I saw it today and it is ok I guess if you don't have expect much. What bothered me most was the animation. Not the anime style but the smoothness of the moves, it looked often as some frames were missing in scene. Story was kind of ok but I expected more from Helm during his raids. In books it was described much better. Here it was reduced to one raid unless I confuse it. Weakest character was certainly Wulf who just doesn't work as main antagonist. Some easter eggss were ok, some were just bad(watcher in the water). 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/119619-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-202/page/2/#findComment-8539308
Glade December 29, 2024 Share December 29, 2024 (edited) This was really compelling, it had my full attention from beginning to end even though I was prepared to not like it. I enjoyed the story and characters, and I'm glad it was made; these stories deserve to be adapted, regardless of how much some 'fans' hate female characters. I have no idea what the Watcher in the Water was, but seeing it eat an evil elephant was pretty cool and unexpected. The ending where she goes to meet Gandalf (off-screen) was highly unnecessary; Saruman was enough (and this brings to mind that horrible Hobbit ending where Legolas is instructed to meet Aragorn), but other than that I gave it 5/5 stars. I'd absolutely be down for more LOTR anime.
