And an interview with the showrunners: https://tvline.com/2019/12/02/prodigal-son-recap-season-1-episode-10-junkyard-killer-revealed/

Quote

TVLINE | What can we expect when the show returns? If the Junkyard Killer has Malcolm in captivity, what’s Malcolm’s mental state at that point?
FEDAK | Not. Good. [Laughs] Bright is doing two things: He’s trying to figure himself out and he’s trying to escape, but there’s a third thing, which is that he’s fascinated by the minds of serial killers. He’s also trying to understand this guy. It’s very much a duel when we come back into the story. It is a gigantic, scary, panic attack of an episode. If you think we have done some crazy s—t on this show, we are about to take it to another level of disturbing. It’s a ludicrous, fun, crazy episode.

TVLINE | And yet, Malcolm has already had such a tenuous grip on reality this season. Will this encounter with the Junkyard Killer break him mentally, even if he gets out physically unharmed?
FEDAK | I will say this: He will not get out unharmed. Psychologically or physically.
SKLAVER | But the good thing about Malcolm Bright is there have been many points in his life where he should have been destroyed, and he wasn’t. There’s just something in Malcolm that will always fight. People aren’t broken; something breaks them. That’s what we say in our pilot. And Malcolm’s always trying to fix the thing itself. He’s going to therapy, he’s taking his medication, he’s doing his daily affirmations. It is fair to say that he is beyond pushed to the brink. But Bright is not someone who will ever give up on himself, so we’re excited to watch that journey that he’ll go on.
FEDAK | And Tom [Payne] is so amazing going through that struggle. We knew from the get-go that in every episode, he’d be at 11. And now, we’re finding gears to take it to 12 and 13.

TVLINE | We also haven’t seen Martin in a while, now that he’s in solitary confinement. If we catch up with him soon, where’s his head at in the wake of Ainsley’s interview?
FEDAK | Not. Good. [Laughs]
SKLAVER | We can promise that we’re seeing Martin in Episode 11 when we come back. He’s not in a great place, and neither is his son.
FEDAK | When his son goes missing, it’s a great opportunity for us to do a scene we’ve been looking forward to for a while, which is getting Michael Sheen and Lou Diamond Phillips in the room together.
SKLAVER | We’re also excited about how much deeper we’re going into the Whitly family — how much time we’ll spend in 1998, learning more about the case that was built against The Surgeon. It was the trial of the century when Martin Whitly was being tried in New York, and telling that story — all the way through how he ended up at cushy Claremont Psychiatric — is something that we’re really, really excited to tell. I think fans are going to love getting to see Martin when he was at the height of his power.

Will we find out the cause of the tension between Prodigal Son‘s Malcolm Bright and Colette Swanson? –Theolin

“We’ll definitely speak to that issue of what happened in the past, with him and the FBI and stuff like that, but the individual story with Colette may be something that has to wait for Season 2,” says showrunner Chris Fedak. “Right now, we’re on a different path with regards to that story.”

Bonus Scoop: Fox entertainment president Michael Thorn recently assured us, “The Season 1 finale is going to be very twisty. All I’ll say is that the family is even more complicated than you think it is.”

Sounds like they might just drop the story with Colette. Maybe the actress isn't available.

In the last episode, when Eve found out that her sister was the "Girl in the Box", I noticed that Malcolm had a flashback we hadn't seen before; him looking over the backseat in the deathmobile and seeing Eve's sister then Martin chloroforming him.

I think that he will continue to remember more and more from that night and my sneaking suspicion is that Martin "initiated" Malcolm that night and Malcolm is the one who murdered her.

Question to all.

Did Martin really release her or did he kill her anyway?

Am guessing he killed her after she told him about nicholas.

I think that he did release her; though there's good reason not to believe him. Narratively, it's a more interesting direction to go into.

Casting news: https://deadline.com/2020/12/prodigal-son-christian-borle-michael-potts-season-2-fox-series-recurring-1234650804/

Quote

Two-time Tony award winner Christian Borle (Little Shop of Horrors) and Michael Potts (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) are set to recur opposite Michael Sheen and Tom Payne on the second season of Fox’s serial killer thriller drama Prodigal Son.

<...>

Borle will play Friar Pete. A former friar ejected from his church for extremist views, Friar Pete is famous for a notorious killing spree that has landed him in the psychiatric ward with Martin (Michael Sheen). Friar Pete is a careful listener and offers respite to the other patients – and becomes a key consultant in Bright’s latest case.

Potts will portray Dr. Brandon Marsh, Martin’s (Sheen) new therapist at Claremont who’s desperate to have a breakthrough with his psychiatric patients.

--------

I'd rather them bring in a therapist for Malcolm and/or Ainsley.

So Malcolm's going to have ANOTHER serial killer consultant? Martin's not going to like that!

So, since it seems neither Malcolm or Ainsley are in jail OR psychiatric facility at the start of the season... does this mean that they (or just Malcolm??)  just coverred up the murder? Is there a body in the basement? In the Box?? The truth will have to come out eventually, right? Is that the recurring story for the season?

Details about Catherine Zeta-Jones' character:

https://deadline.com/2021/01/catherine-zeta-jones-star-season-2-fox-prodigal-son-michael-sheen-1234665719/

Oscar and Tony winner Catherine Zeta-Jones is set to star opposite Michael Sheen on the upcoming second season of Fox’s serial-killer thriller drama Prodigal Son.

Zeta-Jones will appear in the latter half of the season as Dr. Vivian Capshaw, Claremont Psychiatrics’ resident MD.

In Season 2, Dr. Martin Whitley (Sheen) is assigned to infirmary duty, and Dr. Capshaw (Zeta-Jones) revels in tasking “The Surgeon” to clean bedpans and mop the floor. But as Martin proves valuable in treating patients, Capshaw begins to see him in a new light…which is not a good thing.

“An extraordinary talent, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the perfect foil for the brilliant Michael Sheen,” said Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, Fox Entertainment. “I can’t wait to see these two greats go head-to-head in a season that is bound to raise the bar set by an outstanding Season One.”

PAYNE: No, but we were all wondering how that was gonna play out. We’re filming Episodes 6 and 7 now, and the storyline is still playing out. We’re still seeing if they’re gonna get away with it and how it might be resolved. It’s been fun. We’ve taken a bit of a step forward in time and we have somehow magic-ed the body away to [E]stonia, and we will discover some details of how that happened and threads might start to be pulled on that. The situation might start to be a bit more dangerous for Ainsley and Malcolm.

First look at Catherine Zeta-Jones as Dr. Vivian Capshaw (photos also):

Quote

In two exclusive photos from Prodigal Son‘s March 2 episode, the Oscar winner makes her first appearance as Dr. Vivian Capshaw, Claremont Psychiatric’s resident MD (and a series regular for Season 2).

As series co-creator Chris Fedak tells TVLine, Zeta-Jones’ arc will be “a very Martin-centric storyline,” prompted by “a reason for him to be in the infirmary for a couple of episodes.”

Though Dr. Capshaw will at first revel in tasking Martin with unsavory jobs like cleaning bedpans, she’ll start to see Martin in a new light as he proves valuable in treating patients. Per Fedak, Zeta-Jones’ character will serve as an “interesting foil” for Michael Sheen’s: “It’s going to be an exciting relationship. There will be a bit of bonding between the two of them, and really crazy things are going to happen — very few of them being good things, but entertaining.”

If they don't take a break, the March 2nd episode should be 2.08.

Is it safe to assume she'll be a type of love interest for Martin? I was actually wondering whether he has had any "pen pal" type of relationships with other women. (Because in real life some of these sickos have "fans".)

I am curious about Jessica’s sister because that is going to be interesting enough.   My guess is sister comes to visit playing the perfect sister married to the perfect guy who isn’t a serial killer.  Jessica finds out he is cheating on her or something like that and does  the sisterly thing and threatens him “I was married to one of the most notorious serial killers of the 21st century.  You think I don’t what do with a dead body.”     And then let’s her sister leave thinking she still has a perfect marriage because her sister doesn’t want to know the truth and the Whitney’s are essentially liars.

Ooooh yay! Jessica’s memoirs are going to be a story! I honestly took that as a throwaway line. That has potential. I’m sure Malcolm and Ainsley will wonder why on earth she would want to do that.

An Edrisa episode? I have mixed feelings about that. If this is cute, quirky Edrisa with a funny little crush and a lot of passion for her job, sure. If it’s the Edrisa of the last couple of eps, no thanks.

So is Vivian Capshaw just a dupe? I don’t like her and Martin’s twisted whatever but I like the idea of that even less. Maybe she helps.

I wonder if Martin’s family will be afraid of him if he escapes. Jessica is the only one I can see possibly being afraid for herself (when she rejects him), but surely Malcolm would be afraid of what he might do. Ainsley would probably welcome him.
