  1. I think they maybe are following last year's Luca storyline with Matthew: Luca, who has cooking chops, was eliminated on the second episode because he was nervous in front of the camera and, curiousely, Alex Guarnaschelli was the guest judge. He went to Star Salvation, conquered his fear, returned to the competition and was runner-up. Matthew, who's a good cook, was eliminated on the second episode for being arrogant and immature, Alex G. was the special judge, he'll go now to Star Salvation (which she'll host with Jeff Mauro), he'll evolve, conquer his 'demons' and have a change of attitude, most likely will win SS, he'll return and who knows if he'll be one of FN's final three. We'll see.
  2. I perceived that, after four years, Jeff is still paying his dues to Food Network. Sandwich King wasn't renewed for a new season, which they apparently approved, since they had a 'Season 6' on the show's episode guide page. Likely, FN realized why to spend on SK, which was filmed in Chicago and for which they had to pay for sets (since it wasn't Jeff's house), if he can still cook and make sandwiches on The Kitchen. That money should be used for Bobby Flay's new fitness show (another show for him), since his company produced SK. FN's new daytime direction is to give cooking shows to celebrities and show business people, like Daphne Dishes and Valerie Bertinelli and cancelling ones like SK and Heartland Table, which both had higher ratings than Daphne which was renewed. Even Barefoot Contessa hasn't had a new season in more than a year, and will return this year only for seasonal specials. They haven't announced new seasons of Giada at Home (maybe understandable, she'll have a new show called Giada in Italy) or Guy's Big Bite. Back to Jeff, he had only one regular prime time series, $24 in 24 in 2012, which was taken off the air not necessarily because of ratings, which weren't bad, given FN's lack of promotion compared to other shows, but because of a budget scandal, which culminated in alleged extorsion lawsuits between producers (http://www.courthousenews.com/2013/01/24/54213.htm). Since then, he hasn't been given another opportunity to host a regular prime time show, competition or travel. The Disney specials were given to him, likely because Guy, who was the one who did them, was unable to continue. For the second Disney special, if wasn't Jeff's but he was part of an ensemble. He also did the 'Candy Craze' special last October, which was the highest rated special that Saturday night, again with almost no promotion, as his other specials. Jeff is FNS' most talented winner since Guy and he deserves to host another prime time series but, FN prefers to bring outsiders like Anthony Anderson, Bill Rancic, Jessie Palmer, Dean McDermott, Richard Blais, Curtis Stone (who's first show Kitchen Inferno was heavily promoted and was an expensive flop and was given even more shows), Graham Elliott, Michael Symon, Bobby Deen and Duff Goldman (Symon returned to FN with a couple shows, Deen and Goldman with three shows each). Sunny Anderson and Geoffey Zakarian will host a new prime time series this month, so among FN family members Jeff isn't been considered to host a prime time series either. Even for The Kitchen, as he said on interviews, Jeff auditioned because his agent encouraged him to do it, so the network not necessarily submitted his name to the producers or were supportive or championed for him plus, he was the last co-host to audition, so apparently, they had tried more people to fill that spot before him or maybe TK was created for just four co-hosts. In my opinion, he's been a big part of the success of that show and I'm not sure if it might had the same success without him. Also, I've noticed that until a couple weeks ago, they closed the promos with the picture of all the co-hosts and now, they close with Sunny lying on Katie Lee's shoulder.
  3. Lenny just finished his first chat on FN's Facebook page. Just a couple of questions about his videos (which he ignored) and mostly overwhelming support from posters. He answered about a couple dozen questions pretty well, just what FN's expecting. His idea for a show is a DDD but about ranches, farms and homesteads. There was this question (which I think wasn't intentional) where a female poster asked Lenny: "What's your advice on cooking brisket just right?" Even before Lenny gave the punch line, another female poster answered "LOW and SLOW!." Lenny just repeated the punch line, acknowledging the woman who said it. LOL
  4. I was also surprised the eliminated finalists didn't talk at all, other than Chris showing the stars on the back of his head and Reuben who spoke a couple of words, they were pretty much completely ignored. About the finalists families, they haven't been present or shown since Season 8, when Justin Warner won. Also surprising last night, was FN president Brooke Johnson appearing, since she didn't do it last season, where there wasn't so much controversy.
  5. Food Network's official press release about Lenny's win: Audience Crowns Gourmet Cowboy Lenny McNab Winner of Food Network Star On the release, GM Tuschman describes Lenny as someone who has "magnetic personality, culinary chops and cowboy swagger who made him stand out from the beginning." Also that he has "true passion for great food and the great outdoors." From these words, FN probably might have settled on Lenny to win from the start and that they might tweak his pilot concept to make it a cooking/outdoor lifestyle show, like 'The Pioneer Woman' or 'Heartland Table,' with a little or a lot of Lenny's 'charm and quirky humor,' as they highlight on the press release. So far, they're ignoring Lenny's controversy, just like they did with Guy's alleged sexist, homophobic comments. Guy's their biggest ratings/money maker. It's all about ratings and if Lenny's show's successful, pretty much they won't do anything. Paula Deen's firing was more about her declining ratings than her baggage, which was pretty much heavy by the time of her dismissal. At the moment, Lenny's scandal has stayed within social media and hasn't picked enough steam yet for mainstream media, like TMZ, Radar, New York Post or a credible news source to take a look at it and create a great outrage. For now, FN might be counting on this to go away and to keep him under control by late fall, when his show most likely premieres.
  6. If FN doesn't check their own editors who gave away spoilers (like showing Luca's booth at the Las Vegas poolside challenge), most definitely they won't care to vet or check Lenny's online posts until now. Lenny is a character, just like Larry The Cable Guy, Pee Wee Herman or Steven Colbert. These are people who have an on-air and an off-air persona. I didn't like Lenny that much or didn't vote for him precisely because to me, he didn't come as authentic. Contrary to Pie Style Rodney last season and Retro Rad Emily on season 8, who came across as characters, they or the network didn't package their on-air personas very well, while Lenny succeeded doing that until his videos came along. Also, on Pie Style's season, 'villainess' Danushka was eliminated quickly and he soon became the finalist most people loved to hate for the rest of the season. FN made sure that Sarah, who unexplicably or purposely stayed on the show until the end, was perceived as 'the villain' instead of Lenny. It will be up to FN to protect their brand and deal against any potential situation concerning Lenny's antics. They already started by taking the video.
  7. That's the Master Chef cruise in November and last season's winner Luca Manfe is taking part of it. I think that, at this time, Food Network might do almost anything and put anybody to grab ratings. They have done it so far putting bloggers, singers, farmers, actresses and comedians to host cooking shows so, they sure might try with someone portraying a character like Lenny or Rodney. The mistake they made with Pie Style last season was that he came across as arrogant, know it all, clashing even with the mentors, while his food was universally panned and his Pie Style POV was confusing until the last episode when Giada asked him to explain it again. Lots of people really despise Rodney and many voted for Damaris by default, just to prevent him from winning and, since Russell (Culinary Sins) was a weak finalist, that also paved the way for Damaris. FN made sure last season's mistake wasn't repeating itself. Lenny, while a character, came across as likeable, humble, funny, acknowledging and recognizing his mistakes, and his food was mostly well received. Nicole is a stronger finalist than Russell so, it will be difficult to prevent a Luca win by default, because some people perceived that they are lots of Italians on FN/Cooking (Giada, Guy, Jeff, Corcos) and Lenny could be a breath of fresh air. More than a copy of Jeff or Guy, FN might try to make him a male version of The Pioneer Woman, cooking for the cowboys at the chuck wagon, as Tuschman and Fogelson made clear that the pilots were just the groundwork for their shows and not the definitive concepts.
