How I Met Your Mother - General Discussion
Ffiferoo replied to nymusix's topic in How I Met Your Mother
Ah, I didn't realize that. I saw the other thread with the descriptions of the new characters, and I think I'm even less interested than when I thought it would center around Milioti's character. -
I'm heartened by the fact that I'm liking the episodes this season more as it goes on, which is much closer to my experience with the first season than the second. Hannah again was Hannah, and I continue to find her awful mostly because she is too-real and too much like people I know. This was one where Adam said everything I was thinking, and I also got on board more with Caroline here. I loved her trick with the "Margaret" story, paired with the predictability of Hannah co-opting it once she knew it was fake in order to garner sympathy from Adam. The scene between Shoshanna and Jessa was great, with both of them recalling these deaths in ways that were so true to form for both of them, and Jessa not even listening. It came off so childish to me for her to describe Season as her "favorite friend".

I definitely preferred this episode to the pilot - I only got around to watching it on Sunday afternoon because I wasn't as drawn in by the pilot as I'd been hoping, but now I'm very on-board. I also like that while the characters are so interesting that I could do entirely without the case, I'm *also* very interested in that. They've struck a balance there that I don't find much with usual cop-type shows.

How I Met Your Mother - General Discussion

Cristin Milioti is so wonderful! She will be wasted if they don't feature her much more heavily in the rest of the episodes this season. Just the fact that she can make so many of Ted's obnoxious qualities somehow endearing is so perfect, I can't imagine anyone that could have done this better. The question I'm left with after this episode though would be whether they're still planning the spinoff - would they just do a slower version with more details? Because I kind of don't need that. I've been anti-spinoff from the start, but now it seems extra pointless because of how well-done this episode was. I feel like we've already had a great example with this show of too much of a good thing, so to extend that with a whole other show is pretty silly to me. Also probably my favorite cameo so far this season: Mitch the Naked Man! -
I'm less bothered by continuity and world-building issues than I have been by some of the less solid plots in the past few weeks, but I really liked this episode. It was just the right amount of creepy for me (so not very), while still being more "horror" than the last few weeks. The Axman was still a waste of time, so that was the weak point for me, but Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett were fantastic together as usual (and Gabourey Sidibe and Kathy Bates, whose interactions I was missing), and I loved the way they left it with their intertwined hell. Interested to see where the end of the season goes, but at this point I think I'm more interested to hear more about what next season will be like with Jessica Lange practicing her German accent - magical Nazi hunters please!!

And I liked the shirt, too! He should wear it!

Hannah's parents! Laird! Taco! I wanted to love this episode so much, but I just can't with Marnie singing Take Me or Leave Me and continuing to fuel my dislike. The thing I hate is that there are so many of these cringingly spot-on moments of things that would happen and be terrible, so I simultaneously identify with it and want it to end right. now. I'm interested to see where the plot goes with Adam's sister, but I hope it'll just be another episode or two, unless the unpredictable crazy moments taper off a lot. It's hard to watch him continually try to convince Hannah how toxic his sister is while Hannah continues to be appropriately nice (albeit in an understandable way). It was good to see more of Ray this week. Maybe nothing will come of it, but I'd love to see some awkward fallout from his "fight".

Despite the ways GoT has disappointed me at times, I am super psyched for this season. I think before last season people were hyping it as having a ton of the best moments, but this season will be equal or better as far as I'm concerned, plus the potential for ridiculously good new character intros. It seems like there's been very little news this year compared to in the past, but this trailer was worth the wait!

How I Met Your Mother - General Discussion

I would never have guessed they'd do a Kill Bill parody, but it was pretty funny. I always like Marshall-centric episodes, so this was a good one for me, although some more plot would have been good. -
Ah, you're right, I had seen that. I'll definitely watch it, at least to start, and I want to be open to it being really great, but I am not a person who's able to separate things in my mind and just appreciate an adaptation for what it is, unless I've seen that before reading the source material. Especially for something like American Gods (or Sandman) that I've loved for so many years and that I'm very familiar with, I get pretty protective. I've done okay with GoT because I didn't read the books until after the show started airing (although I hadn't watched yet), but it's different for things I've been familiar with much longer. Sometimes I wish I wasn't That Guy, but I am. I think casting will be key, and I'm interested to see what network will be producing, because that will make a big difference. I actually really like the tangential bits in AG, and I feel like that's something they could potentially make good use of on TV. (Should we be splitting this to an AG adaptation thread in the Guff?)
-
I had heard that the American Gods series was probably not happening - maybe it's still up in the air? I read through Sandman about 10 years ago and I still love it just as much as I did then. You should check out the one-off Death graphic novels as well when you're finished with the main series (I think they were three issues apiece). I'm currently feeling pretty anti for a film adaptation (similarly to how I feel about an AG miniseries/series). I don't know that the material will translate well, and even a lot of very well-intentioned adaptations in the past few years have been really shitty. I hate for it to take away from the source material. What do you think of it so far?

Loved Lance Reddick! I guess this also was common in past seasons (although I haven't watched them), but I'm getting a little tired of the constant deaths. There's no impact because people keep coming back anyway, and it's starting to not even be interesting anymore. In general I thought this episode was all over the place - I was watching from the DVR after being away for work during the week, and I kept thinking the act breaks were the end of the episode.
-
Yeah, it was the online test - I registered for it in December. It was 50 questions with 15 seconds per item.
-
I took the college test once about six years ago, and I remember it being similar to this time - I knew a bunch of answers but then blanked on a lot that I should have known. Probably this is an indication that I would be terrible if I actually went on the show.

Some people have already mentioned the Grantland pop culture podcasts - I don't listen to them all every week, but they're pretty consistently good when I do (usually for topics that are relevant for me). My regular listening consists of EHG, Game of Owns, and Penn's Sunday School. I have a 50-ish minute commute to work every day, so I try to spread everything out over the afternoons. I had been listening to PSS since it started last year, but I really started getting into others this fall when the school year began, so I'm fairly new to finding shows to listen to - I'm interested to take a listen to some of the suggestions in this thread!

How I Met Your Mother - General Discussion

I'm liking the more recent episodes this season better than the ones in the fall, at least. It felt like every episode centered around some manufactured drama, often resulting from out-of-character behavior (especially from Robin, imo). The slow roll-out of the mother is irritating, but I like everyone having their own experience with her, and I really enjoy her character. I'm ready for it to be over for sure though! -

I'd be pretty bummed if the mother is actually dead. That would be a great twist for a drama series, but for all the depressing shit I watch, I'd like my one regular sitcom to have a happy ending! For a show that's become about "the journey", it would be plenty satisfying to have the expected ending. The speculation is fun and interesting, but I would be really disappointed if she's dead. -
I'm not sure how they did it in the first season (or two?), but I remember it being a short holiday-time season at one point, and then they had tried to extend it to a longer run, so I guess they were trying to go back to the previous schedule this year. I should have DVRed it to begin with and keep forgetting, so I've missed several nights already. In general I'm not as excited about the groups this season as last time, and Jewel is fine, but I miss Sara Bareilles as a judge. I do really like Vocal Rush, so I hope they win it, but I think the faster pace might be contributing to my caring less.

I'm so disappointed that this isn't available for Android yet. I played a couple of rounds of Song of Ice and Fire on my friend's phone last weekend (because that's what we do drunk at house parties), and I loved it. Having all those topics to choose from is great.

I like Emilia Clarke, but she can get pretty shouty when she's being aggressive on Game of Thrones. I don't know about her for a part like Sarah Connor. The quality of the script will be big here, I think - if the writing is good, she could be good, but if she has the kind of material that they gave her in season two of GoT ("where are my dragons!?!?"), it might not go so well.

I am a huge baby about scary things and have only read wikipedia articles about the previous two seasons, but this one does seem less structured. I guess once it's done, maybe it will seem more cohesive, but they're jumping around a lot, and I've stopped being concerned about anyone dying. I guess maybe Queenie didn't make it? With Misty being able to pretty much instantly revive everyone and there being apparently no consequences to that, it just doesn't seem like a problem. I did like a lot of this episode, but I was bothered by Myrtle deciding to just replace Cordelia's eyes without thinking about it affecting her visions. It seemed pretty obvious that that would happen, so especially with the conversation they had earlier about who threw the acid, I almost thought she did it purposely to keep Cordelia from finding something out about her. I get that it was also a vengeance thing, but she could have just replaced one eye, so maybe Cordelia could have both (plus the possibility of incorporating a sweet eye patch).

The Annual Golden Globes - General Discussion
Ffiferoo replied to sdpfeiffy's topic in The Golden Globe Awards
I was pretty disappointed not to see Lizzy Caplan or Allison Janney nominated for Masters of Sex, and I would have liked to see some acting noms for Mad Men cast members. The Globes are weird for TV though - I feel like too many genres get mashed together in the interest of avoiding a million categories.
