Wow.  Novak retired???  At the quarters? His shoulder/elbow must be really bad. I don't know if he has ever done that before.

Go Roger!!!  I really want him to get at least one more major. Sadly, I will have to read about it because I won't be able to watch it for another 10 days or so.

I agree MostlyC, I've been so hoping Roger would win one more Wimbledon and the way he's playing I think he has a real opportunity.  Go Roger Indeed!

Selkie, thanks for that Guardian quote on Isner/Mahut.  I'm American but I love reading the Guardian coverage for tennis or entertainment, their writing is generally brilliant and often hilarious.

I just watched the Novak match, actually pretty much saw them all today live or on Tivo except the Muller - Cilic one.  I guess Novak must have been hurting but I couldn't help noticing, and the Tennis Channel announcers were noticing it too, that he just looked "quizzical" - I would have said "confused" out there.  I wonder if he just needs a break.   I do give Murray credit for at least finishing his match, however he felt.

  2. Yes, it's all very confusing though.  It appears that certain matches are given to Tennis Channel Plus - I purchased it for $72 a year one weekend when they were having a 20 percent off sale - but I looked at it during Wimbledon and could only find French Open matches.  I don't think they are allowed to show Wimbledon, you have to go to Watch ESPN.  I think.  Or something.  The other bad thing is that the WTA made some marketing decision that has taken their tournaments off Tennis Channel. And ESPN?  Actually I don't know, but it used to be that Tennis Channel would repeat every major after ESPN showed it live, and while they are doing that for Wimbledon I'm not at all clear what the arrangement is the rest of the year.   I wonder if tennis will ever get itself out of this state of broadcasting flux - I feel like this has been going on for as long as I've been watching, and no wonder the casual fans get confused.

Speaking of Tennis Channel, Martina is my favorite commentator.  There are other good ones, but she is the best I think about explaining what is going on in a match and why the players are doing what they are doing (for better or worse).  I like Jon Wertheim's commentary a lot too.

  3. Very sorry for Bethanie.  I didn't see the accident happen but I imagine something must have moved terribly out of place and torn to cause that pain.  When I was a teenager I dislocated my kneecap (I pushed it back in the car on the way to the doctor) and while I needed crutches for a couple of weeks or so I am sure I had no pain compared to what she must have gone through.  Something ruptured?  I wonder how the players feel sometimes knowing that could happen at any moment? Anyway the support from her fellow players is touching.

I'm sorry about Petra too, Harry, after what she went through with the attack I was really pulling for her.  However she's a great talent and a popular player so I hope she will have a W title in her future.

Vika looks great though, coming back so soon after having baby Leo (funny that Roger has said that the one of his kids who seems most interested in tennis is his son Leo...)

David West is really the one that glommed onto the Warriors for a ring.

KD is at least a bit contributor and has made them better.

I'm wondering if you meant to write "KD is at least a big contributor"?  :)

So happy for Kevin, long time coming.  I would have been happy just to see him get the championship, but to be Finals MVP as well...so thrilled. I'm so glad nothing happened to derail them.

Eh, at least KD will get his ring. He's busted his butt and deserves it.

I don't watch the NBA all the time these days, but Kevin Durant is amazing, and he's been my favorite for quite some time.  He played his heart out for OKC and I don't get all the hostility.  I remember him visiting Moore after the terrible tornado there and I believe he made a large donation to help the people.

Anyway, I really hope everything goes as planned and he gets the ring.  He's been incredible.  People act like he broke his contract or something, he was a free agent and went with a great team that is having a great playoff.  Good for him and them.

  6. I was able to watch Petra Kvitova's first match back at the French Open, and what a wonderful moment for her.  She came out so strong and was so emotional after making it through.  I would just love to see her win a major again.  if she could pull off Wimbledon it would be so great.

If it makes you feel any better, I have zero doubt this will be the only time Zverev beats Djokavic, possibly not even the only time this year. Kid's going to win slams.

Ha, thanks theatremouse, it sure looks that way to me too.  I only first noticed Sascha earlier this year when he played a very close night match against Nick Krygios (I think it was Indian Wells?) and I thought at the time that he just needed to mix things up a little more.  Now he's doing that and improving in many other ways as well.  Maybe his brother Mischa has helped him with learning more net play.  Anyway it's good to see a really talented young player making a move like this, I'm a diehard Fed fan but it will be interesting to see the next wave after the Big Four (or really Big Five with Stan) eventually retire.

Hmmm, is Agassi working in conjunction with Djoker's guru or replacing him?

Sascha Zverev wins Rome, cracks the Top 10.

I'm just a tiny bit annoyed that Djoker chose to break the Agassi announcement as soon as he lost to Sascha.  Sascha gave a brilliant performance to beat Nole for the Rome title and it would have been nice if that had remained today's headline, not the hiring of Agassi by Nole (neither of them a fav of mine to be honest).  However it's great to see Sascha break through.  I was wondering if there would be anyone for me to watch after Roger finally retires, but it looks like the new generation is in sight.

Glad to see there are folks here who feel as I do about the Maria situation.  I was appalled at Tennis Channel's rah-rah-ing, though this weekend it seemed that Paul Annacone and Tracy Austin were suggesting that Maria's statement that she wasn't going to ask for a Wimbledon WC was damage control, since her agent had likely been told she wasn't getting one.  Really the whole Maria WC incident has been a farce, and a shameful one.  It's not supposed to be about the ticket sales.

  9. Just to get back to the original show...MeTV is currently carrying the later shows and I'm looking forward to them getting back to Season One again, but I recently saw just an excellent later episode, The Case of the Deadly Verdict.  It's the famous episode where Perry loses a murder case (at first...) but so many things stand out...the self-hating defendant who won't help herself, the great night scene in the victim's bedroom where Perry, alone, tries to figure everything out while the voices of Tragg and Burger from the trial are run as voiceover...Burger's stunned look as he gets the "win" but is shocked by it.

As far as the ultimate reveal, let's just say that a certain actor was indeed "a nasty boy!" (in-joke from another role..)

It reminds me of Roseanne, when the titular character and Jackie were arguing about a band I'm blanking on; Jackie couldn't believe Roseanne's insistence the guy it was named after wasn't the lead singer, and asked why the band wasn't named after the lead singer.  An exasperated Roseanne said, "Because [guitarist]'s mom let them practice in her garage!"

If I remember correctly that was also true of the Dave Clark Five, their lead singer wasn't Dave Clark (I think Clark was the drummer?).

I already read an AP story incorrectly identifying Geils as the band lead singer on their hits when it was Peter Wolf.  I always liked the video for Freeze Frame.

    RIP Mr. Geils.

  11. I can't see a ten year old brother killing Jamal unless it was a tragic accident, which seems very unlikely to be three shots in the back.  It's also true that the brother never saw what happened according to his own story.  Certainly someone else could have invaded the apartment and killed Jamal.  Shinwell seemed very specific about saying that "a friend" meaning someone else, whom he knows about, did the killing.

I guess we will find out soon enough.

We still has zero evidence that Shinwell killed his buddy. NONE. The kid heard things. He saw Shinwell walking away and throw something away. Even during Sherlock's beating by Shinwell, he never confesses. He says "a friend" was asked to kill Jamal. Isn't that an odd way to put it if he was confessing? I think his beatdown of Sherlock was an attempt to protect Sherlock and Joan. Shinwell, whose last hope, his daughter, rejected him, so now he is going scorched earth on the gang, and doesn't want our duo involved in it

I heard this too, and I was confused about it, especially since Shinwell had insisted earlier that he never killed anyone.  It is possible someone else did the killing and Shinwell was afraid to confront him?  Also, why would Shinwell kill his friend in his family home?

There might be more to this I guess.  Maybe it will turn out in the end he is not the murderer.

I did like the main story, the conclusion that the bad guy had basically been cooking up a Ponzi scheme of sorts to sell worthless shares of sunken "treasure" was an interesting twist.

  13. Update:  Two of the Weather Channel's "Storm Chasers", Kelley Williamson and Randy Yarnall, have died in a car crash apparently while chasing a tornado.

I don't know what to add to this except to say it's tragic, and I hope there will be no more assignments like this.

  14. I've seen a lot of these, but the one that struck me the hardest was Deadly Rx For Greed, about the pharmacist who watered down people's chemotherapy medications for profit.  Even the FBI agents were in tears.

After I saw this, I realized that this story had been used as the basis for an episode of Law and Order Criminal Intent, and that was also hard hitting, but the true version was even worse.

  15. Bryan Cranston is such a perfect Late Show guest, he plays along with everything Stephen does so perfectly now.   Patrick Stewart was great as well, I loved the Godot sketch.

From what I have read the pre-taping is due to the show running re-runs during Thurs and Fri of last week due to the NCAA tournament on  CBS.  Episodes were taped last week and run this week because they are on break.  They are going back to same-day taping next week apparently.

Thanks, HollyG!  Btw, I got the vibe that he was messing with them about how he didn't know who Eric Clapton was but I could be wrong.  It just seemed like Sherlock's dry sense of humor (or humour).

Oh, totally, I was sure Sherlock was being very sardonic in asking if they knew who Clapton was.

  17. Yes, I hate to say it but as creepy as Morland was last season, I thought the show had more drama then if only, or mainly, because of the conflict between Sherlock and his father and Joan in the middle to an extent.

The Shinwell story doesn't really work on that level for me. I was startled at the idea that he might be a murderer though it may be a tease and we will find out it's not the case.  I was totally confused about the circumstances though, it wasn't clear to me whether or if the stories surrounding the murder were matching up.

  18. I know who Sherlock suspects but I didn't catch all of why?  Quite a stunner to end the episode though.

Interesting attention to detail in this show considering there really is a NYC mayoral election coming up this year.  The whole plot about the guitar was sad to me as Chuck Berry had just passed away.

Yet again Sherlock finds a shocking way to wake up Joan.

  19. I've just taken out a Direct TV Now account for $35 a month as of last night.  I was happy to see that the basic plan has TCM along with almost all the other channels I would want to watch (I do get all the networks over the air although PBS is tricky - but they have a Roku channel I believe).  I haven't canceled my cable yet but with Spectrum taking over for Time Warner in NYC I am afraid that the day will come when their price will skyrocket, and so I decided to try the Direct TV Now and get in on the ground floor.  Provided they  bring in the DVR or "72 Hour Replay" as they call it I do think it will be promising.  I did notice some slight audio sync issues the first night but it's early yet.   I'm using a Chromecast  (which I bought to cast video/broadcast websites to my TV) and it handles it well overall.

Now he's senior field agent so it doesn't make sense for him to spend his time doing that work. It seems they've given Quinn some of those skills and they haven't done any stories this year that requires anything particularily "hacky".

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that but it makes sense.  I guess having missed a lot of the shows this year I didn't adjust to Tim's new status yet.
