@Gramto6 Make sure you really check them out. We got the freezer on top (which is what I need as I don't want to always be bending over for ice, etc). But the shelves are so...limited in height?? I'm *always* bending, trying to see what's hidden in the back of each shelf 🤬. Now I wish we'd bought the side by side.

We had a side by side for years. I really miss it.

Are there any guys here who could tell us?  I have a feeling it's mostly women here.  And yeah, at my all girls' school, some mean things were indeed written.

Guys writing lewd crap in bathroom stalls is so common it's a trope.

Oh how I miss Liz Smith!  I used to love her gossip column.  Read her memoir when it came out - I wish that I still had a copy of it.

Gore Vidal was quite the character.  Very handsome in his youth, witty, intellectual, and he could be as vicious as Capote.  I don't remember the story behind the Capote/Vidal feud but Gore Vidal shared a step-father with the Bouvier sisters (Jackie and Lee) in Hugh Auchincloss.  Gore's mother was Auchincloss's 2nd wife, with whom he had a child (Gore Vidal's half sibling), and Jackie and Lee's mother was wife #3, and had 2 children with him (the son, Jamie, is still alive.  Tragically, the daughter died from cancer in her late 30s).  With all of the marriages and divorces of  these society people , it seems that many are related to each other.

It always take me back a step whenever I remember that Anderson Cooper is Gloria Vanderbilt's son.

True...there was also bullying. But it all wasn't as overpowering as it is today thanks to social media (that can follow you wherever you go). I was bullied for several months by a small group of girls (it had to do with boyfriends 🙄). For me, it was a good thing there was no Facebook or other SM back then.

When I think of some of the things we did at parties, the drinking, the drugging. the skimpy outfits. Oh boy, am I glad nobody was walking around with cameras and the internet didn't exist.

Ah makes sense! He was a great cop and a great person all around. The show was never the same after he died. On a random note on my recent re watch I actually liked James and Gina together they were cute and sweet together even though their relationship was...fast and not exactly built up very much, but it worked I think.

I basically loved everything after David Caruso left. I never could stand him.

I had never heard about "the swans" and knew nothing about any of them. I think it might be hard to really get invested in these characters under those circumstances - I can certainly understand it. But Tom Hollander is sort of mesmerizing as Capote, and I get the gist of the story overall.

For what it's worth, I didn't think much of Feud: Bette vs. Joan. Looked good on paper but Lange was horribly miscast as Crawford and Sarandon couldn't seem to land of a consistent interpretation of Davis. And I knew a lot more about those two than I did about the "swans" yet this season is better IMO, if only due to casting.

I agree. If you're interested there's a book called The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin. It's pretty interesting.

Another great Truman Capote movie is 2006's "Infamous." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infamous_(2006_film)

It has a lot of heavy hitters in the supporting roles like Sigourney Weaver as Babe, Sandra Bullock as Harper Lee, etc. Toby Jones loses himself in this role in a way PSH didn't in "Capote."

I just watched the trailer. My lord, it looks really great.  It should have been a much bigger deal than it was. I'm going to stream it. You Tube has the full movie.

Wow I'm shocked there's someone else who agree with me I usually don't get that too often especially since my opinions are mostly unpopular.

I love anything Bobby does. ❤️

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but my second re watch I stumbled on the Donna and Bobby throwaway arc(I had forgotten about it because it was such a short thing) and honestly I think it would have been interesting to explore that..storyline and have them date especially since it was revealed that Donna had feelings for Bobby which I don't blame her for at all. 💓

I wish we has a swoon button!

I did notice that in the earlier pictures of Steinem in the Vogue article, like in the 60s and 70s when girls were still not permitted to wear pants to school, she is wearing skirts, which I suspect she did in part to avoid criticism of her attire which could distract from real issues, and perhaps also to prevent any comments about her not having womanly legs, or maybe just to demonstrate showing off one's legs is not an invitation to anything.
By 2017, pants were accepted on red carpets.

But yes, Mary Tyler Moore wore slacks on the Dick Van Dyke Show as early as 1961.

A bunch of my friends and I held a sit-in in the principal's office in sixth grade to be able to wear pants to school. We didn't win but the next year they could. The Jr. High already was allowing it.

not a bad wrap up  - but I think that there is another [Christmas] show to happen, no?

maybe we'll see a reformed Doc who is more like the movie version, still gruff but a lot more socially acceptable with more emotion than just disdain.

    There's a MOVIE?!?

I honestly wish this season was Feud: Capote vs. Vidal.  Both writers, both openly gay when homosexuality was technically illegal, both had a biting wit, both drunks, and both assholes.  I'm finding this season unbalanced because three episodes in the Swans have not done anything to Truman to warrant what he did to them with that article.

I think he saw the absurdity of their lives and he thought they did too. Like they were letting him in on the joke because he was special. But they didn't think their lives were absurd and they were shocked and hurt when he held up that mirror.

Yesterday my husband had lens replacement surgery.  We were waiting in the prep area, he with a sticker that said "Yes" on his forehead over his left eye, & I busy watching the surgeons walking past (mega ortho surgery day, including several of the orthopedic surgeons we've both seen over the past few years).  All of a sudden one of them came into our cubicle, walked right up to MrP914, asked how he's doing, then turned to me, asked how I was doing.  He thought my husband was his next surgery patient 😁.  It was really funny (hisIs l patient was in the cubicle next door). It was nice to see him though...he did my rotator cuff surgery in 2016 & last year did my husband's torn meniscus.  He's an excellent surgeon...once he fixes your issue, you're totally repaired! Husband's surgery went very well & he's ready to watch the Superbowl on Sunday (but is taking it easy...no heavy lifting, etc).

Oh geez...I put this in the wrong thread.  Just like my ortho surgeon walking into the wrong cubicle 😄

Is lens replacement the same as cataract surgery? I'm seeing my eye doc on the 19th to schedule that for myself.

The same issue with The Assassination of Gianni Varsace.  We know the details of what happened but the conversation for obvious reasons needed to be guessed at.  It was still a fascinating story and so is this.

The reasons why Capote published the first chapter made a certain amount of sense.  He had writers block.  He was waaaay past deadline for his book and his publishers were threatening him.  He was deep into alcoholism and drug addiction.   None of these are excuses mind you but reasons why he might have just said “screw it” and wrote about Babe Paley legitimately thinking that she wouldn’t figure it out or that she would forgive him….because at that point he had ingratiated himself into her life as her one true confidant.

After the fallout, he kept saying "They know I'm a writer. They know I'm a writer." He was utterly baffled at why they all dropped him. He really didn't get it and became a caricature of himself. He was destroyed.

  15. Pamela Harriman - now that woman was a piece of work - she made the Swans look like a bunch of amateurs when it came to social climbing and bed hopping and a quest for power.  I read a fascinating book about her some years ago and I guess that she could be described as the last of the great Courtesans.  They don't make them like that any more.

With the internet and social media, intrigue is much harder the pull off these days.

This sounds like "the latest" from middle school. If it were happening to me, as soon as someone said, "annzee?" I'd just look at them (no expression).  When they would say "Hi"...I'd simply nod my head & get back to what I was doing.

I'd just go "Uh huh" and go back to work. No reaction, no expression.

I hope they change that. First of all those kids obviously didn't take good care of the cat since it was found severely injured and half dead. And  I don't want poor Helen to suffer on top of James leaving her to become a glorious RAF pilot.

It didn't happen then. Keep in mind they're screwing around with books quite a bit.

I have one long-haired cat. I think Old Navy offers these leggings in other colors..maybe ones that match your cats! If my cat were all black, it would be great but she's Tuxedo. I just had to edit my previous post as those Cuddledud leggings that I love have a touch of gray, but the dominant color is dark charcoal. Loooove 'em 🩶.
