  1. I was listening to a podcast about Alone and they made a good point that was a good reminder... We saw Larry go foraging up the mountain. He identified the puff balls, so he knows stuff about plants and when they're edible and when they're not. He said, for maybe the second or third episode, that he's been eating a lot of dandelions.

But we haven't seen him eating dandelions. For all we know he's been having a dandelion and mushroom salad every day. It's 35-something days in and we're only now seeing him looking for plants, but he must have been foraging all this time.

But we always see him yelling at the wind and cursing at the sun and dancing over tiny fish. That's what the editors want us to see of him. We wonder why Sam "wastes" time with spoons and mugs after 30 days... but maybe he's been hunting and fishing and foraging this whole time but we never see it. It makes us think that's all he does when that's all we see, but, there must be tons left out that colors our opinion of him.

Anyway, good to keep in mind.

One of the confessionals last night featured the player wearing a black buff, which would suggest both they and the player they were talking about reach the merge.

Good catch. Though, technically, the person they were talking about may have been a franken-quote, cobbled together from other bits of speech, what that person said on camera while wearing the black buff was just a pronoun and not a name.

Right now on H&I the Numb3rs episode "Dirty Bomb" is airing, in which thieves fake a heist of radioactive materials to get an area evacuated so they can steal priceless art. I'm pretty sure other shows have done this too.

It's Die-Harding: faking an emergency of one kind to commit a crime of another kind :)

  4. "How old were you in that picture?"

    "15 years, 9 months."

"How many world records did you have by then?"

"All of them, I think. Definitely all the freestyle ones."

"Do you still have that swimsuit?"

    "No, it's in a museum."

I'm sorry, but, on a team full of some of the top competitors in their sports, that's pretty above and beyond badass. Good for her. Especially since the editors sandbagged her with the fart report early on.

Also, the picture of Mat and his kid was great. I really wasn't warm to him, but, that picture kind of made me see him differently.

  5. Bumping as it's been a while in this thread. I was a few episodes behind and am just catching up.

Just a thought about the milk glass trick from #6, which was a fooler. I'm reminded of these beer cups from the stadium. The beer fills from the bottom, which makes them faster to serve: there's a hole in the bottom of the cup, and a magnetic disc that covers it. A pole pops up through the bottom, pushes the magnet up, shoots out the beer, then as it retracts it pulls the magnet back into place to seal the cup.

My best guess (and I definitely don't know for sure) is that it's something like this. The cup is rigged with a hole in the bottom with a rubber gasket. The bottom of the cup is also magnetic, and underneath the cup is a copper-painted disc or plug.

The copper rod pushes down into the glass and through the rubber gasket, pushing the magnetic disc down. The gasket is just as big around as the copper rod, wiping it dry as it passes through. The magnetic disc sticks to the bottom end of the rod as it goes through. Then, when she pulls the rod back up, she brings the magnetic disc with her, and when it gets to the gasket, it sticks in place and seals the bottom of the cup shut again.

Anyway, that's my best guess so far.

edit: on a rewatch, she doesn't push the rod down then pull it back up, she pushes it down and all the way through. In that case, I think there's a second magnetic disc/plug on the top of the rod that is pulled into place and is left behind to seal the bottom. Since the top opening is bigger than the bottom one, the cap is just a smidge wider than the rod, fitting through the top then getting pulled into place at the bottom.

Yeah, start fishing the minute you get there and smoke them to preserve them. Then eat them each day. Unlike Dave last time around.

I believe last week, either a contestant or the graphics said the smoked fish only last a week or so. So stocking up only gives them 7-10 days past the river going cold?

  7. Survivor NZ had the weirdest Final Four dynamic I've ever seen. It was 3 against 1, but the 1 had immunity. She wanted a specific one of the other 3 gone. The 3, though, didn't want him out. Not that they'd have much choice, you'd think, as there's no one else to vote for, right?

But! One of the 3 has an "epiphany" and genius plan... The 3 will lie to the 1 about who is they're each voting for, so that her vote is wasted. Then 2 of them will blindside her, and vote for the person who came up with the plan. That way, she steps aside so that the members of her alliance go through.

I've never seen someone orchestrate a complicated blindside to get themselves voted out.

It is kind of weird to have a Sherlock Holmes TV Series where you as the viewer don't get to use your brain to try to figure out what's going on based on the clues. I pretty much just turn my brain off and use enough of it to realize if the train has jumped the tracks with their latest revelations.

Yeah, the convoluted plots and twists are almost impossible to follow sometimes. I mean, if I look at my phone once during the show, I'm probably lost from there on. Every other scene seems to jump to a different track.

IMO, though, the books aren't much different... only Sherlock could solve those crimes, as the vital clues are only given once he comments on them ("I know by the dirt on his shoe that this man has traveled to North Whatever" or "By the scratches on the watch fob I know this man's brother is an alcoholic"). There's no way for the reader to be a step ahead of Holmes.

Now I’m picturing Sam as one of the Three Little Pigs. The one that built the straw house was the laziest. Sounds kind of right. The Big Bad Wolf would be the windy cold weather. Also, Sam does have a sad beard going on so the hair on his chinny chin chin sounds spot on too.

That reminds me, Sam frequently posts on reddit and owns up to the terrible shelter he built in season 1. Apparently he got bad info from one of the locals that took the medical team to check up on him, and had been told the winter winds weren't that bad in his area. By the time he found out the guy was wrong, it was too late to fix.

Was fishing line or hooks an option? I guess not... because that would be the first thing on my list.

Everyone else picked them. Sam picked paracord and trapping wire, because he thought they were more versatile: he could cut the paracord and pull out the smaller inner strings to use as fishing line, and he could cut and bend some trapping wire into hook shapes. And still have the rest of the paracord and wire to use for other stuff. He used the 10th slot for a second set of food rations instead of the fishing line & hook set.

    That plan didn't work.

I also don't think I'll ever get sick of Lady Driver. Whoever came up with that idea needs to get a raise.

    It's a real thing.

At least, it was a real law from the days of the Model T in some places, and never repealed though also never enforced. It shows up in those online "list of wacky law" articles every so often.

Here it's listed for both Louisiana and Virginia: https://blog.nationwide.com/weird-traffic-laws-by-state/

You can fish in a fast river. The Nantahala River, near where I live, is always full of guys standing along the banks fishing. No idea what line or bait they are using, but a friend of mine posts pics of his catch on Facebook every week. Never seen anyone using any type of net contraption.

Sam didn't bring fishing line, nor fishing hooks, so his options are limited.

I liked the way the reveal was done, but all the stuff in-between didn't seem tied in well enough. We got to watch him whispering it in backwards, so playing that same track reversed is underwhelming. Make it appear the sound was recorded inadvertently and that trick becomes 10x better.

The whole looping trick made little sense to me. He made this whole thing about adding the first three tracks, then added his whisper on the fourth, then reversed it, then took out the first three tracks. So all the stuff with Alison & P&T did nothing but waste time. He literally did nothing more than have her pick a card, then say what it was four minutes later.

I'm really glad they did Skyler's episode.  I thought starting with the video of his top surgery, cutting to his not-quite-conscious tears at seeing the results, was the right thing to do.  As was Tan being so honest about his ignorance around trans issues.

I'm kinda surprised that they didn't edit around Tan calling Skyler "her" during the fashion reveal. At least, I'm 99% sure he did.

Good on Jesse bagging the grouse with an arrow. I don’t think we ever saw anyone hunt successfully with arrows before. Now we’ve seen it twice this season.

I thought the same thing, after four seasons of worthless bow & arrow talk, last week we got a grouse, now this week another grouse and a snake. Three kills after four years of nothing!

This might relate to this speculation/possible very minor spoiler:

    Spoiler

The long delay between seasons might signal that this competition goes for a very long time. With multiple people catching lots of fish AND finally being successful with bow hunting, this might be true... we could be in for a long stay!

Speak of the devil. That's what Marcy did with Powerpoint in the season opener, and here you already described it perfectly.

For the Sentimentalists, I can't say. They had an assistant but he didn't leave the stage. He could have flashed the image through the glass to someone while the air was still blowing. And then the picture was not a particularly great copy, but that could be misdirection. I also noticed the woman turned the blank card over before she drew on it, but that could be meaningless as well.

Sentimentalists... first, it threw me that the flower/mandala shape was so well drawn... I mean, it totally looked like it was planted. If it wasn't for the no stooges rule and an audience member having claimed to have drawn it, I would have just assumed he walked into the box with it already in his pocket, then pulled it out amidst the flurry. Just like in an older season, when a magician had all the audience members throw decks of cards at him, and he "picked one at random" but really dropped it out the bottom of his pants leg. I guess we have to assume that it was a truly random selection, and that he happened to pick one that was so pretty.

The guy didn't talk enough to pass along a code for the image in between his selection and her drawing. Watching it again, she really does seem to draw a flower on the card at the time she claims to. I don't think she had a thumb pencil or anything and did it after. He only said a couple of words so I don't think he could have cued "flower" in just three or four words.

Love the show but..... was it really necessary to to cast Larry again??? Surely something is not right upstairs and I cant see random rantings  adding anything to improve the show or ratings.

The guys on the Alone podcast made a fair point... The show isn't out to cast the ten best bushmasters and see how they do... That would make for boring TV. They are out to make the best show.

Also, they were pretty hard on Brad. Brought up that we've never seen in any season snares work to catch more than the occasional mouse. Setting up 40 dinky looking ones, then not catching anything in a few days then deciding to go home was pretty weak. Every season comes down to finding something small in your area that you can rely on. Even fish don't get the job done, eventually they're gone. Living off limpets, slugs, the two brothers last season just eating garbage for a month... That's what wins. Out-starving your competition is what it tends to come down to. Not snares. Maybe this season it's grasshoppers. Giving yourself a few days to catch bigger animals, then sucking in your gut and claiming you can see ribs wasn't the right attitude to have. If you're not willing to look for and eat worms for a month you won't get anywhere.
