What on earth.... I don't think he's Angelina Keeley delusional but he truly does seem to have a high opinion of himself.

    [....]

As always, everything that comes out of Jamal's mouth is just so irritatingly condescending.

If you pay attention, he relates everything back onto himself and his own awesomeness.  The "metoo movement is now somehow something Jamal takes personal pride in?  Could my eyes roll back any farther?

Everything about Jamal is the living, breathing personification of Smug

  2. If I remember the graphic novel correctly, at some point Veidt does say "I'm not some Republic Serial villain", which is a reference to the twirly-mustache bad guys of old movies.

In the Watchmen movie, they changed this line: he says "I'm not some comic book villain". That was a nice touch.

He said it again in his dictated letter to the Game Warden.

  3. I have no idea how the writers resisted the urge to have Torres pull the cloth off the crow cage and say "looks like I've uncovered a murder" and then have Bishop find the body and say "Me too".

  4. If Jason's EW interview is accurate, it seems the original plan was to split the old Lairos: get Aaron and Missy to flip and vote Elaine, have Elaine and Elizabeth vote for one of them, then, the original Vokai's would all vote for Aaron. They didn't trust him and would have preferred to keep Elaine in the game, with the bonus of having Elaine mad at Missy and potentially willing to come to their side.

That's why there was so much whispering after the Block-A-Vote, they weren't sure if they'd have the numbers (though, they could have!) and decided to just go along with the "fake" plan of voting off Elaine. If they trusted both Aaron and Missy to flip, though, they could have still gone through with the Aaron vote.

I was noticing that as well, and I think it’s because Dean’s face is so... featureless as to approach artificiality.  Unmarked by wrinkles or blemishes to the point Dean’s face looks - unfinished, more like an anime pencil drawing than real life.  And it’s not exactly an appealing quality.

I dunno, there's something off about his nose. Either it's been broken and healed crooked, or it's too big and in the wrong place or something.

Unless he really was a member of the leadership of the 7th Kav, and it's revealed by the old man at the beginning of the next episode.

Really no need to worry about security when you're in control of the organization everyone fears.  I also thought it was telling he chose go alone.  Maybe he was headed to the hospital to murder the police officer who survived the surgeries, and he didn't want any witnesses?

It just seems so obvious it was a very stupid and out of character for everything they established about him throughout the episode.  It had to have been intentional.

This is what I'm assuming, Don Johnson was the sheriff who's secret a member of the Bad Guys, because that mirrors the plot of the black & white movie the boy was watching in Tulsa in the first scene. The boy grew up to be the Black Sheriff Who Saves the Day (name escapes me at the moment).

It was really idiotic to not play the idol.  He received votes at the last TC, he knew people suspected he had an idol, he knew there was a women's alliance, he knew Karishma didn't fully trust him and he watched her whisper in all the womens' ears at TC.

How could he possibly feel secure enough not to play it, especially when it was only good for 2 TCs?

I can take a guess at factors in play, the largest of which that Vince would have "no tomorrow" if he saved himself with an idol. That is, he's already burned the men and if was going to be voted out by the women, he has no one to work with anymore anyway. So getting all (or even just some of) the girls' votes this tribal and canceling them out wouldn't mean much.

So using the idol means he has to root for a tribe swap the next day, instead of going home to where he knows he's on the outs with everyone. Retaining the idol means he can use it next tribal (maybe necessary after a tribe swap), or, keep it and use it as a fake idol later.

Factor in his confidence in getting his Tom ploy to work and I guess he just did the math and found it was better to hope he stays, than use the idol and stick around and play with seven or eight sworn enemies for the rest of the game, however long he lasts in that situation.

BTW, what was with Sandra and Boston Angelina hedging about whether or not to "call it a wjn".  Of course it was a wjn, he brought back ashes from the dead fire.  What more could they ask of him?

Just faux drama for the cameras. Of course he succeeded in the mission. They are just being TV fake.

    Public Service Announcement:

I was delighted to discover today that Phoebe Waller-Bridge has revived her one-woman play "Fleabag" (that the show is based on) for a very limited run in London, AND that National Theatre Live will be broadcasting it to cinemas! So if you live somewhere where your local movie theatre sometimes broadcasts the Metropolitan opera or other live events, you might have the chance to see the original play performed by PWB herself in London's West End! I checked, and it's playing in my town for one screening only later in September, and I live in a small town in Canada, so chances are good it's coming to your town too! Don't miss out!

The link to NTL is here, and may have more information about where you can see the show!

Just found out that the places it's screening have expanded considerably. Now it appears to be in most of the AMC Theaters in my area for a day in November. I'm guessing the Emmys (near) sweep had an impact.

Well, that caught me by surprise, I wasn't expecting Molly to get voted out at all.

It really felt like one of those red-herring edits, where the editors choose some random person to focus on as a target just to keep some suspense going into tribal. But then everyone was in on it except Molly, Jamal, and Jack... I did not see that coming.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone be that bitter after the first vote…ever.  Not sure Aaron handled that well, but Missy sure did (“we need to gain that back” when he talked about losing trust).  Aaron can go next.

Aaron's behavior after tribal wasn't great. But Vince... even worse.

I have a sneaking suspicion something hinky happened with Janet on the train at the end. Like, maybe they swapped her with a new, unevolved Janet.

I thought so too at first, especially in the way she walked back into the shot after leaving the train, until I realized it was so awkward because it was the Janet body double, as D'Arcy Carden was busy being Bad Janet in the foreground 🙂

She can’t. She specifically had to pull the name of someone from the other tribe to visit next. It was a stupid lie.

Agreed! How the hell does she expect to get away with this lie? She knows someone from the other tribe is going to go to the IOTI. How will she coordinate the lie once that person knows Rob and Sandra are there?

PLUS, isn't it likely, Elizabeth, that the person you just sent will also be drawing a name out of a bag and sending someone from your tribe, or, if you lose another challenge again, your tribe will be drawing names out of a bag... so there's a real chance the next person from her tribe going won't be in her alliance, how will she coordinate that lie?

All the next person has to do is say "OMG it was so awesome Rob and Sandra were there and it was great and there are these giant statues of them and everything!" and people will seriously be giving Elizabeth the side-eye.

AND... telling people the truth is better for you because of the name of the island!!! Everyone assumes the Island of Idols has... IDOLS! As in, immunity idols! Advantages! Secret stuff!  You come back from "The Island of the IDOLS!" empty-handed and everyone will be suspicious of you!  Instead, she should have just said: "Guys, you won't believe it... the island has Survivor Idols in it, as in, famous former players. Not immunity idols!" and as soon as another person goes and verifies it, she is not under any suspicion for having an HOI

So not only did she screw herself by telling a lie that she cannot possibly maintain, but, she throws more suspicion on herself with everyone assuming the IOTI has a plethora of immunity idols up for grabs and she has a very real chance of having one.

  14. What was up with the faux-drama on the third and final spot? Dave voted for Creepy Jason to take spot #2 ahead of Laura... how did they think he was going to vote for spot #3 when it came time to break the "tie" between Peck and Nunez??

Overall I did like the format of the episode in that there was a blind judging of identical tattoos, but, I also felt it was contrived to result in a "no winner, everyone tattoo again!" ending. I wish blind judging and strict head-to-head like that happened more often. And I wish I could believe there was a chance that one or two people would get sent straight to the finale from it, instead of being obvious filler.

  15. The only defense I can even attempt to muster about Dani's eagle is that we're seeing it foreshortened in 2D. Maybe, maybe, the effect is different seeing it in real life, with the wings wrapping around to the front of the neck. Maybe.

  16. Agreed, there were more young guys aged 18-24 than I expected. Not as many older moms and dads.

Like Henry, Stephanie, Priya, Helena, and Alice

Not a fan of Jamie, just in how he blows off everything and seems to admit he's out of his depth.

Having 11 episodes is a very odd number. Usually it’s 10, 12, etc. No reunion episode? Very strange.

It is weird. Wikipedia says seasons 1, 4 and 6 were 11 episodes, but doesn't say which (if any) had reunion episodes included as part of that count. Seasons 3 and 5 were 10 episodes. Season 2 was 13 (a more normal order for other channels).

I don't know, maybe there is a "floating" number of episodes, 10 to 13, that the network allows them to have, and it just depends on how much interesting stuff happens.

I don't mind 10 and 11 episode seasons if that means there isn't two extra hours of padding of nothing happening.

woah, I can't believe they don't have an emergency evac plan!! All the what if's came to my mind. I'm glad he was okay after the 7+ hours he had to stay out in the elements.....how ironic, the one that didn't bring a fire starter has to tap due to fire consuming his shelter. Glad for Jordan....& he was planning on staying until Jan 20...huge fish on that last day, maybe he could've.

They might have an emergency-emergency evac plan, just not a standard tap-out-at-night option. I mean, at some point they can call in a military medevac/coast guard chopper at a cost of a hundred thousand dollars, right? If the guy is literally bleeding out on the ice I'm sure they have an option faster than 8 hours. But their standby chopper didn't seem to have a searchlight on it, so I guess the call is "can you make it to morning, or do we call in the army?"

The contestants who were sent home usually mentioned that they've learned a lot and are better chefs because of this experience.

So are there segments we don't see where they're actually being taught how to cook various dishes?

I'm assuming so. None of the chefs in the episode (except one) had ever made sausage before. So someone had to teach them how to grind the meat and fill the casings.

Not sure about this season, but in past seasons, often after being told the challenge, they stop recording and get a lesson and recipe. They've often also been allowed to consult recipe books. Also rules are gone over with Broadcast Standards/network lawyers, questions can be asked, etc.

Also not entirely sure about MC compared to other cooking shows, but, the contestants are sometimes asked to cook the same meal three times: once to be judged, once to get in extra shots of them cooking and technique, and another to produce the version of the dish they get the beauty close-ups from.

AND, also, I missed out on the explanation of the little 'hanging pail.'  Can anyone explain what was its intention?   (Nick's creation could very well have been stunning - but the viewers deserved to at least share in what made the judges go gaga.)

I believe there was dry ice and some lemon zest in there, and the flavor was supposed to float down into the bowl
