  1. It doesn't really matter that one of three is eliminated before the final judging. Despite what Dave says, the judges would make sure that the eventual winner makes it past the stupid jury.

Just like the jury is useless when putting someone in the bottom (the judges make sure that the person going home is one of the other three if the jury doesn't pick them), the jury is useless when picking someone for the top. If Tiffer was going to beat Tony, he would have been up there instead.

  2. I felt Teej had the better tag-team tattoo, but I'll give it to Tony having the better master canvas.

But I prefer Christian's leg by far over Cleen's muddy piece. If only it wasn't rigged for Cleen from the start. Chris was always going to pick him.

  3. Way early in the season, when Bret won the Punishment Pass and decided to use it right away to "gain inside information on the other team", I couldn't help but make fun of that decision... why do that when you know there is a trip to Vegas coming up at some point in the season?

So, right after the girls won and the prize was announced, I loved, loved, Bret's next interview where the editors identified him as 'Bret, 36, used punishment pass in week 3'. Thank you editors!!

  4. Eddie "Money" has taken some heat, but, to be fair... the criticisms for almost all the dishes, and especially those on the bottom, were on poor technique and preparation. Yeah, Justin could have used more ingredients for his dish, but, Tom thought it was fine and he was safe. Eric wanted more blood orange, but, the judges though the dish was great how it was and he wasn't in danger.

But there was no fixing it in the grocery store for poorly made biscuits or underbaked food.

Also, it is part of "the game" of Top Chef, dealing with the others in a team challenge. Actually, it's part of "the game" I don't usually like, and I'm glad they didn't do in this episode what I've seen done in the past. Sometimes, when the chefs have a team issue... for example, one obstinate teammate wants to just do something completely wrong, like used canned tomato sauce in his pasta dish, and the judges will ding the whole team for not stopping him and having him ruin the whole team's dining experience and being the reason they end up on the bottom... but... when a teammate gets talked out of doing something that might have won it for the team, like, adding more seasoning to a bland dish that became the reason they lost, the judges will ding that chef for "not standing up for what you think is right". So I'm glad that, in this episode, they took in the information about Eddie using up the bulk of the budget, but, seemed to fairly judge everyone for what they presented and how they made do with what they had.

All that said, yeah, Eddie deserves some heat. I wouldn't go so far as to say he should have been eliminated for it, and he's not "dead to me" or anything, but, he earned some shade.

Yeah? I guess I’ve always assumed that the final votes were kept under strict lock-and-key, that maybe a few people at the very top would know but nobody else, in order to prevent spoilers. Because in order to do their jobs effectively, the editors would not actually have to know who won, just who made it to the end. Do you know this for sure? Not arguing, just curious.

Yeah, they know, and the producers are in the edit room sitting next to the editors guiding the cut all season long.

Probst and the producers read the votes right at the final TC...as we saw last season they at least need to know if it's a tie so they revote right away.

Not many, but, maybe a dozen or so people on the show staff know the winner. The "story producers" will work out what to focus on, what storylines to play up, what maneuvering to highlight, and help the editors craft the narrative.

TV is made differently than most people think. There are lots of people involved. It's not a locked room with an editor working alone, he's probably got three guys behind him watching him work all day, talking out ideas and suggestions.

  6. Once again, Amanda does the second-worst tattoo of the day, but this time her luck ran out and they sent her home anyway. I really think the precision failures on either of Team Cleen's should have sent one of them home over her, if judging solely on the work in the challenge itself.

  7. The whole Perception/Perspective thing seems like someone in production made a mistake. Like, oops, we didn't realize there was another valid answer. Was Carl supposed to be a mind reader and just know what random word that has nothing to do with the game that the producers are thinking of?

It reminds me of the haphazard stacked letters from the previous season, where one was declared "upside down" because the drop shadow was on the wrong side, but, they missed that the winner's letters had the same mistake.

  8. The first HII is played before the votes are read. Peachy tells everyone it's an HII, but then pulls out the Nullifier and cancels it. There's still time to play a second HII after, in response to that.

Peachy knows there's a Nullifier in the urn before he returns with the votes, because Peachy and the producers look through the parchments and put them in the most dramatic order for revealing before he goes back to the Tribal Council area. So there's plenty of time for him to knowingly pause and allow any and all HII's to be played before he starts reading off parchments.

Scotley is such an absolute jerk, and I cannot stand his mumbling. He needs to go! I'm not one for fish, so the soggy scaley fish Gizzy made was nauseating.

Gizzy's dish just.... did not look appetizing. It was a whole fish, dropped on a plate. Was the head supposed to be edible? The eyes? Ugh. That skin. Just a bunch of lemon slices on the side. Ick.

Also, they totally gave away Gizzy was leaving about halfway through the program. There was a talking head interview where she thanked Roe for always being there to help her and give her advice... and there were still literal tears rolling down her face and clinging to her chin. She had been bawling, and it was obvious. Red puffy eyes, tears, her voice catching... it was doubtless it was filmed at the end of the day after she got the boot. Made the whole rest of the episode pretty obvious.

Agreed.  Someone had to leave the kitchen.  If they all insisted on staying nothing would have been finished.  Just a bad excuse to set up the ridiculous dreaded pressure test.

really hate when these cooking competition shows do this. It's not just HK. Top Chef does this from time to time... they have a team competition, and then browbeat the losing team when they make a teamwork decision... like, one chef will insist on doing something dumb like serving canned peas and rotten fish for their dish. That chef refuses to back down when everyone else calls them an idiot. So the judges then penalize the team for allowing it to happen. But, flip the script, if the chef does back down for the sake of team unity, the judges then criticize the chef for "not sticking to your guns".

    It's asinine.

If the rules require the chef to do something, like, leave the frikkin kitchen, it's just stupid to penalize them for following the rules. Someone had to leave. Why criticize someone for playing along with your own stupid construct?

Oh she was power hungry and I believe that as the series went on, she just stopped trusting the Prophets. The Reckoning was the final straw when the possessed Kira completely brushed Winn off like she was nothing and focused on Sisko. At that point, I'm surprised she had any supporters left, because it wasn't like everyone from civilians to Star Fleet saw this happen. At that point I'm surprised there wasn't: "Get Rid of Winn!" movement.

Winn never started trusting the Prophets. She was always bitter that she'd never, ever, had a vision from any of the Orbs. I think that's part of why her zealousness for power was so much greater than any love for her religion. The Prophets never made time for her--she had no time for them in return.

  12. My favorite detail in Team Christian's flash challenge was the plants in the lower corners: on one side they were dark-on-light, and it was reversed light-on-dark on the other side. Neat solution to the problem.

This came up the first time it happened during mvgx, and I believe the answer was they put them in some kind of empty large room, one per tribe. So, they were separated by tribe, but allowed to talk to each other. I think the lights were kept off, I don't think they fed them, but they did share sleeping bags.

(All this is from memory -- the only thing I know for sure is they shared sleeping bags, because I remember hearing that Will and Zeke shared one. But maybe it was far enough along in the game that everybody got their own sleeping bag this year).

My memory is that they go to a hotel, but don't get rooms or beds. Each tribe sleeps in a conference room on the floor, because it's Survivor and there are no beds unless they're reward.

BUT, I seem to remember that they are NOT allowed to talk, at all, while they're sequestered. Since they can't use any footage in the episodes, they don't want any gameplay happening while they're in the hotel. They don't want the contestants maybe making a new alliance, coming up with a new strategy, making any deals, someone saying something that causes other people to vote them out, etc., and then they can't show in the episode where it came from. So, it's just like the walk back from TC, the walk to/from each challenge, the boat rides, etc.... no talking allowed. (Which is why it isn't until they walk all the way back from TC or a challenge that they all open up and burst into talking once they're back at the beach)

    • If you were cast on the show, wouldn't you plan for what you might need to wear, given 36 seasons of evidence?

I don't think they're really allowed to pick all their own clothes. The producers and casting people will come up with their outfits. Most famously, Cochran had never even worn a sweater vest once in his life until he was made to wear one on Survivor (twice).

As for him going on the reward to ‘gather intel’...a) what intel would they have that your team doesn’t?  Don’t you ALL cook the same recipes? b) I think the Golden Retriever puppies  in those Disney “Buddies” movies have more stealth moves and higher IQs.

I think he thought he was on Survivor and was going to come back to the blue team having figured out all the "alliances" or something.

That reaction to the pass was pure jealousy. If one of them had it, they’d use it in a heartbeat.

If he’d held it up and said “who wants it?” They would all have been clamoring to go.

Personally, we are pretty much guaranteed to get a reward/punishment where one team spends the weekend in Vegas while the other team has to have fish milkshakes. I would have saved it for that and mocked anyone else who didn't wait for that.

All the contestants seem to be wearing a floral Hawaiian style shirt which I totally see as a nod to Jon. Awww.

I thought so too from the preview and couldn't help but smile warmly. What a cool group.

One of my biggest pet peeves about Survivor. You spend all this time with your tribemates, and you still have no clue how to spell their name? Especially when it's a "normal" regular name. Or a name that's like 3-4 letters long or something. Come on, people.

Did Jeremy's vote for Natalie say Nicole? Or did I see it wrong?

I guess I can’t really see the trouble about scoring the Wellingtons. Can someone tell me what I missed?

to me, the scoring looked the same as on the Ramsay website recipe. (Won’t let me upload the picture)

    thanks!

He scored them before doing the egg wash. So, the slits would have filled with egg wash and baked brown, instead of the bread shell cracking nicely with white peeking out of the scored pattern

I just don't get why two raging homophobic dudes would attend a wine & painting class together.

Yeah, I was laughing at this whole bit. It made no friggin sense that those guys would be at that class together. Didn't even bother to make it look like their wives dragged them to that thing or anything, just, two random dudes hanging out at the wine & paint club. Such a dumb excuse for a scene!
