If I was supposed to like Kate better after this episode, it was a big ol' fail.  I wasn't fond of her before, but after this one, she can go pound salt.  She was horrid.

We saw not one instance of Phillip being anything but an ass until he texted her after the divorce was signed.  Serious retconning going on, which is probably due to COVID, but still, not cool.

I'm going to miss little Jack.

It makes  little sense.  He started to mature and now he's falling back on the womanizing ways?  Great writing...

Because Jack's wife (sorry,  can't remember her name) showed common sense and didn't want them there?  Truly, I didn't want anyone but my husband there when I had my children.  I had to kick my mom out of the room for the first one and we really didn't tell anyone for the second.

Shouldn't it have been Ms. Pearson-Damon?  Everyone I know who hyphenates uses Ms.  But the braille was a nice touch.

Quick!  Somebody edit it to  MeanJerk!

I admire their consistency in casting blind actors.  And yes, chubby kids do sometimes turn into thin adults.  Happened with my youngest, between hormones, growth spurts, and him deciding on his own to eat healthier.

The only way I see Cassidy there is if she was invited by Kevin.  Kate and Cassidy have had no interactions, to the best of my knowledge.

    You nailed  it.

No question.  I assumed it was a kid dealing with divorce trauma.  Not to mention, his mom is morbidly obese.  But yeah, I've known adults who were chunky when young and now aren't.

    A few random thoughts:

    1. I didn't need a whole back story on Philate (too funny....but makes sense...oh AriAu don't go there), but it would have been nice to see something that shows how or why she makes him happy. Something, anything since Kate has not exactly been portrayed as someone who makes those around her happy, other than St. Jack Pearson and the music students. She is almost always a downer and, as has been pointed out again and again, has no friends. I'm not even going into the physical attraction/that she is morbidly obese, just personality wise, we never saw what made him happy.

    2. Of course Philip had an incredibly painful and miserable backstory....what else would you expect from This Is Us.

    3. Rebecca and Miguel were not at the New Big Three's 6th birthday party. Just saying.

    4. Has any character in recent memory had a better retcon than Madison. She really, really shook her insecurities and over sharing and intrusions into the lives of others that we saw at the beginning, seemingly out of nowhere.

    5. Thrilled that after how bad they made Toby look (or tried to make him look) that this episode showed him to really care about kate/the kids/making it work and it was great that it appears he found happiness. "Appears", because in the flash forward, he is alone in bed in what looks like a pretty depressed sounding state.

Speaking of the flash forward, something has always bothered me-how is Toby so close to the Pearson cabin that evening when he lives in California?

Right?  Madison became a whole 'nother person.

Wow, that's really sad for both Kate and Toby.  I can't imagine getting married knowing either 1.) You know your husband will never measure up to your dad or 2.)  Your wife will always consider you less of a husband and father than her dad was.  Ouch.

And this is exactly what's wrong with this show: the weird canonization of Jack Pearson to the point it ruins marriages, relationships.

It's not unusual for daughters to look for a mate that has the traits of their father. But to have this your dead father be a third party in your marriage?  Odd.

I wonder about her job also.  She doesn’t have a degree does she?

Didn't she mysteriously finish her degree despite them never showing her in class, online, cracking open a book, studying?

  5. I've hate watched this show forever, but I actually loved this episode with the exception of Toby having to give up the job he loved.

Upon reading your comments, I'm starting to question myself!  You all are so right about so much of this!

There's no video filter to make someone appear thinner. You can make someone appear younger by blurring adjacent pixels and thus smoothing out facial lines, but you can't change someone's proportions in a moving image and make it look real.

It doesn't matter whether she's "a natural," she still needs her certifications. Most people wouldn't get care from someone who's "a natural" at medicine but doesn't have an MD or a medical license.

Yeah, I was thinking it would be impossible to do especially of her size.

We always assume that they can't show that Kate lost weight because Chrissy didn't lose weight but they could always use another actress, they do that all the time with younger and older people of the main actors like with younger Nicky, younger William, young woman Beth etc. Why not make a finale with a woman who is kinda thinner than Kate if this is how they want the story to go?

    I'd rather they not.

There are so few roled for an actress of her size that it would make me sad for her to have them cast a thin actress.  I'd rather they video filter her if that was possible to make her appear thinner.

When I watched the episode this week, I felt sad.  I know Kate's character can be miseraable, but I really like Chrissy as an actress.  I'd love to see her in more things but I wonder if she will be able to get a role as, no pun intended, meaty as this one when this show is over.

So Kate should just suck in her feelings and put on a happy face immediately after finding out her husband lied to her because Toby is having fun?  She did put on that happy face with his boss when she pretended she knew about the job in LA.  He's lucky she was that calm.

That's also the big rub.  He's basically living a single man's life while she's holding down the fort between his visits.   That's a resentment creator right there.

Hailey’s birth mother picked them because she liked how they fought. Oops.

This was truly one of the dumbest storylines.  Let's choose a morbidly obese mother of a blind son and her hefty husband to raise my child when there are thousands, if not millions of more fit couples that would adopt her baby, because I just love how they fight!

I really agree with this post. The demise of their marriage has felt very organic and "real" to me vs some  inexplicable, never saw this coming, milked for drama plot device.

Their fights have been so real that it has made it feel uncomfortable for me to watch, in the sense that I feel like I'm eavesdropping on them.

    Agreed on eavesdropping.

I even think some of the words said are very much like a marriage argument where boiling point is reached and then the word choices aren't great.

  11. Funny for me, I don't think Kate nor Toby are the bad guys.  I feel like they are doing a really good job of showing two people that love each other but have grown separately not together.  The first evidence of this was when Toby decided to get healthy and put all of his energy into that while Kate did not.  I'm not sure that a lot of marriages could survive when someone takes control of their physical health and another doesn't.  Then you have a special needs child, two differing views on how to raise a special needs child, then long distance and voila, marriage is on very shaky ground.

I am annoyed that several storylines remaining are way too rushed.  I would have rather them say "we decided to extend the season out to give the storylines time versus rushing to meet an arbitrary end date."

I’m getting the sneaking suspicion that Mark truly is an asshole off camera. He’s showing some rigid, angry glimpses of himself. His anger plus Lindsey’s habit of attacking with mean, abusive words…this season can’t be done soon enough.

I also would no be surprised if there was more to he story.

I don't see him necessarily being angry, but I can see him being someone who is just *there.*   And doesn't follow-through on what he says he's going to do.  She may be hardcore but I think  there is probably a lot more to the story.  And she probably sees him being mealy mouthed with everyone but her.

Every single day since Toby turned down the job, he has violated a promise they made he would look to find a job back in LA. Every single day since then he has lied to his wife. I’m sure there have been conversations about looking in the interim. I am sure he has not. Every single day, I think, for months. He’s done that before. Lied for days on end to her about things he doesn’t want to have a conversation about. And now, after repeatedly shattering her trust (she’s now just processing all the lying), he issues ‘what else could we possibly do but move here?’ a ‘my way or highway’ ultimatum.

Right.   This is the second major lack of trust issue popping up.  Why should anyone stay with someone who can't be open about some major things in life?

Kate got a job, albeit a crappy, poorly paid one, in LA.  I doubt the emphasis on a woman's appearance is any less there than it is in SF.  From what we've seen, Kate's attitude is her biggest barrier to gainful employment.  She just doesn't see the necessity of earning a living, even if the job isn't so great.  That, combined with her overall negative attitude, is the issue for her.

She barely got that job, remember?

Personally, I think that this show at this point would be no where without Margaret. Because she is willing to be confrontational, she is moving these plots forward.  And while she CAN be too confrontational, she's also empathetic, as this episode showed with Jennifer.

Also, she's 100 percent not afraid of Teresa and I will always like her for that. Teresa is a bully and much like Dorinda on NY, I can't stand any housewife who thinks she can issue threats like a mobster and not experience any consequences.

Marge isn't perfect, obviously. She has acted in ways that have harmed people she cares about. But I appreciate the fact that she has demonstrated a capacity to grow. Which is better than some of the others on this show.

I'm in the camp that loves Marge.  She makes for some great reality TV and as you said, she's not afraid to go up against the incredibly stupid Teresa.  I would be totally good with Teresa not being on this cast.

I can assure you if my partner gave me an ultimatum like that after lying to me about opportunity to move back to where we lived (as he agreed when he moved away), he would not like the answer.

Exactly.  The fact that he concealed the job offer and then once revealed, wouldn't even tell his wife what the salary would've been?  It seems pretty clear it would have been enough and that's why he wouldn't tell her.

Not to mention, she's had zero involvement on the house he's already been in talks with the realtor with.  This was all sprung on her.  This is the big gesture that I was referring to when I said I hate big gestures.

Toby is doing what Jack did to Rebecca.  Steamrolling decisions past his wife and expecting her to roll along.

I realize he did not purchase the house, but she was expected to make a decision within hours, right?

I think people saying Kate can just "get another job" are minimizing how hard it would be for a morbidly obese woman to get a job in a city that is considered one of the fittest cities in the US.   TIU may ignore the pink elephant but there is a pink elephant that looms in the job market for someone so obese.

Toby did stay in big gesture character when he planned out a very full day of activities and appearances for Kate and him to enjoy together.  He was excited about Kate being in SF and wanted to show her around.  She takes it as my husband has this whole other life here, woe is me.

Let's face it, Toby can't win for losing with Kate.

Yes, Toby made mistakes but no one is perfect.

True.  Although the big gesture shit is what I've hated about this show!

Man, I would hate that story line.  From a viewer standpoint, it already feels like they want us all to be "Team Kate" but throwing Toby under the bus is off-putting to me. So Kate is suddenly happier without him. I don't necessary buy it, but I can accept it and highly prefer it to turning Toby into a cartoonish villain.  They'll probably do a flash-forward of him with an evil grin, twirling a handlebar mustache.

Def have thrown Toby under the bus.  He went from big gesture guy to sneaky cross-fitter who turned into someone Kate doesn't relate to anymore.

I will say though -- I find some elements of this story to be more realistic than others.  I mean, two very overweight people find love, one gets healthier, the other doesn't.  That's enough to doom a relationship.  Add distance, two people that don't want to give up the jobs they love. Stress of children, especially a special needs child.

And while people can telecommute, there are a lot of people that need the social element of being in an office.  Working from home is not for everyone.  So I could see this happening -- Kate finds out he could have worked from home this whole time, or was allowed to after working there for some period, but Toby wasn't wanting to.  And I think that would def break the marriage for good.  It would be hard to come back from, "you could've been here with me and the kids, but wanted to live a carefree single life away from us with your new job, new friends.."

  19. The fact that Toby surrounds the job salary in secrecy is enough to scream:  "I love my life in SF."  If it was truly much lower, he would have told her.

I also don't believe that Kate is just going to easily get another job.  There really is a thing such as fat discrimination and I would bet it is much harder for an obese woman to easily switch jobs.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next episode, Kate learns that Toby could telework his current job and this will end their relationship.

Her "I have confidence now" schtick is getting so old. It's amazing what a great haircut can do for a gal.

Travis seems like a good guy. Not in any rush to marry Gina, though. Smart.

On the other hand, Jon Janssen (Shannon's guy) is strange. I get a weird vibe from him.

I actually purchased their eye cream and facial mask a long time ago.  The eye cream sucked, the mask was the best I ever used then they discontinued it.

What ever happened to Shannon's QVC frozen diet food line? Now she's shilling some Lemon products. She's gonna go broke with these idea's of hers. Everyone wants to be an entrepreneur.

Oh yeah on Shannon's boyfriend. He seemed to be acting his "anger" about Gina.

I'd love to know how many products exist just for vanity lines -- already made, all a reality TV star or celebrity needs to do is call it their product that they worked soooooo hard on and then posts in IG, promotes on a show.  And I'd love to know how many times the labels gets swapped out when there are no sales and it goes to the next reality star.

  21. If the show is making Toby out to be the bad guy, well, he kind of is.

There's nothing wrong with change.  Change is good.  But Toby is being sneaky about the changes.

    Kate isn't.

Before the job loss and the need to move, there was his cross-fit obsession, the text messages with the girl in cross-fit classes and his secrecy over that.

Now you add in a not telling her about a job offer in LA, talking with a realtor about a house w/o her knowledge, it would be hard to continue to be the spouse for someone that is withholding really important information from you.

He's not going about this change in an honest way.

  23. While I love houndstooth, Heather should not be a stylist.   The blazer Gina wore was illfitting, didn't look like some expensive Dubrow designer item.  It also didn't fit with her leggings.  Nor did it look like a jacket to be wearing in Orange County.  I guffawed at the "you look sophisticated" comments.  I mean, Gina's first seasons where filled with What Not to Wear, Long Island Edition.  But last season and in the beginning of this season, her looks were pretty good before Fancy Pants.
