Now that's the way a FJ question should be written! Clear, precise, a hint with the elephant reference, and making it a possibility for anyone who reads current fiction or occasionally scans the NYT's best-selling list.
It was a good clue, but I've read the novel and didn't come close to connecting the quote with the book.

I think we all saw Zeljko Ivanek as a baddie from the beginning - that's all he ever plays! And he does it so well! I remember him from early 24, so he's always been awesomely creepy to me.
I knew him only as ASA Danvers in Homicide and Law and Order, so I didn't expect him to play a bad guy. He does play it well.

I liked very much most of this finale. The one thing I really didn't like? Katherine is having Weston's baby, so all will be fine. Blech! I still think he's a cold, manipulative bastard, and I wish Jonas had shoved him down rather than the other way around. We saw what Jonas is capable of in the first season; wanted to see more of that.
Love that Denise will be at her uncle's shop with proper financial backing, and I guess Moray gets to stay at the Paradise.

Tom Weston has a cold and cruel streak running through him. Poor Katherine, rejected once again by Moray in favor of Denise. But Katherine's getting her due in that regard - she is capable of being cold and manipulative too.
Loved the introduction of Lucille and Campbell Ballentine. Will he prove to be the savior of the Paradise? He certainly has a high opinion of Denise, which could be her undoing.
I felt bad for Uncle - he's finding it difficult to walk away from the business he'd built, even for Miss Audrey.
In some ways, Dudley and Denise seem a good romantic match. Too bad he's married, with children!
There is a rift in John and Denise's relationship; will it be healed? Time will tell. Only two more episodes for this season, and then we're done. Will we get the "happily ever after ending," or will there be loose ends?

And another thing. How could Katherine NOT say "What the hell are you doing with my watch?"
Katherine (or is it Mrs. Weston? - she changes her mind often on how she wants to be addressed) probably didn't want to subject Flora to another tantrum from her father.
Poor Sam. She loves him, she loves him not.
Myrtle cake - hee! Baking for the Food Hall does keep her busy, but she's still somewhat of a busybody.
I think Weston is stirring up trouble between Moray and Denise to split up what would surely be a formidable partnership when they marry. If they ever do. Moray wants control of The Paradise and has trouble letting Denise do what needs be done because then he doesn't feel in control. He's playing a dangerous game with Mrs. Weston that could easily backfire on him. Jonas is one crafty fellow and seems to enjoy stirring the pot.

I can't figure out Katherine. In one turn, she's a cold-hearted bitch, and the next she's being so understanding and loving with Flora. I think her husband, Tom Weston, is certifiably nuts, and she's probably wondering what the hell she got herself into, marrying him.
I felt sad for Susie; it's unlikely she'll ever get the love and care from her mother that every child should have. But how did women like her mother survive back then, with no money and no support? No rehab or support groups like we have today.
I'm certain Jonas is secretly trying to overthrow Weston, but he's being quite devious about it. I'm not sure I want Moray to succeed in getting the store back, but I sure want it out of the Westons' control!

Walked over to where they were set up, but nothing really happening. CW's interpreters were out and about, so difficult to tell who was a CW employee and who were from the Turn cast. Did hear Thomas Jefferson (CW's interpreter) reading the Declaration of Independence; always gives me goose bumps.

Turn: Washington's Spies will be filming at Colonial Williamsburg locations tomorrow! I may have to wander over sometime during the day.

I love the music and the various accents. I still have to watch with closed-captioning. However, I think I found an anachronism when Ned and Claire said "Okay." While 'okay' is documented as far back as the early 1800's, and of course Claire would know the word, would Ned, as an educated man, really say it back to her? That just pulled me out of the story momentarily, wondering why he'd use the term without questioning the meaning.

Who played the ex-solder bomb squad woman? I thought her role's name was something like Ayesha, but I'm not sure. She was lovely.
I know Montgomery is a producer, but seriously? Carrie is being portrayed as some kind of superwoman. Her one flaw seems to be her gambling habit. Yes, her memory is extraordinary, but that shouldn't mean that she does everything well.

I really loved the scene about the phone bling (hello kitty threw up on my little pony or something like that), and then Nina turns over her sparkly phone. Jane really steps in it, trying to spin an explanation that's not insulting to Nina!
Angela's scene with Jane and Maura was annoying, but it was mercifully short.
And I agree. Of course Jane lives! The will-he-jump and who-done-it is enough of a cliffhanger.

I'm suggesting this as a topic because I want to discuss the upcoming CBS season. Does it have to have suggested sub-topics? I tried to post this earlier today, but I clicked on Preview Post, and what I'd written disappeared.
Looks like it took this time?
Did anyone watch the fall season new show preview that was on last night? I missed most it. The new Laurie Metcalf (Jackie from Roseanne, not sure what else she's been in lately) might not be dreadful.
Also interesting that some of the day and time slots changes were mentioned at the end of the program, but no mention was made of The Amazing Race moving to Friday nights.

Much talk of Claire's costume upthread. The one thing that didn't make sense to me - why did she run off without her shawl? When she got up from the ground next to the rock, it was clearly there. I've been in the Highlands in early September, and even then it was chilly enough to want long sleeves or a wrap of some sort, let alone late October.
Beyond that nitpick, I'v loving this show. I've watched only the first episode so far, but I'm looking forward to more. I confess to watching with closed captions, which helped a lot!

Susan Lucci has also made some guest appearance in Hot in Cleveland, as Victoria Chase's rival. Fun to watch her.

I finished watching Season One yesterday. Some thoughts...
I enjoyed watching Flynn and Vega as partners. They seem to work well together without any unresolved sexual tension, refreshing in my opinion.
Since I have seen none of Season Two, I don't know if Flynn's son returns from France (or even if he arrives safely), but I don't think his character is essential.
I like seeing the Killer and the Victim from the beginning, and watching how the story is teased out. I found the flashbacks within the episodes a little confusing at first, but I got used to it, and it works for me.
Now I'm looking forward to watching Season Two!

I watched Thursday's game, and Brian did have a rough go of it, and did get lucky when the other two (IIRC) a) didn't get FJ and b) bet enough to lose to Brian. I didn't think Alex's remarks were "dickish" at all.

I went to the Highland Gathering at Braemar last year, and also spent a couple of days in Edinburgh. Sheep, Shetland Sheepdogs, all good. Also a visit to a whisky brewer could be interesting, though that's probably a stretch.

IRL, Rose died of pneumonia in the Spanish Flu Pandemic in 1918. In 1916, they rented Highcliffe Castle. While there, Rose established a convalescent hospital for American soldiers. I've visited the castle, but didn't get over to the gravesite where Mr. Selfridge was buried.
I greatly enjoyed the Thanksgiving scene. My daughter lives with her English husband in England, and they have Thanksgiving for friends and family every year, usually on the Saturday before or after the US Thanksgiving. She's talked of how, even now, some ingredients for our traditional Thanksgiving feast are difficult to find, as did Rose!
Lady Loxley, you go girl! I too thought she hadn't found the procurement list, so was happy to see Harry take on Loxley with evidence in hand.

I'm wondering if Dave has some fine motor skills issues. I've know men around his age who get shaky when trying to do detailed work with their hands, so if that's the case, that could be why he had Connor do the illuminating/calligraphy and balloon shaving tasks. That doesn't explain why Connor ended up with the poetry memorizing/reciting, however. I do like both Dave and Connor, and now that the Cowboys and the Afghanimals are out, anybody but Brenchel would be OK with me.

I didn't think that Dr. Turner's reaction indicated he had something to hide. I thought it was the reaction of someone who had just completed battling bureaucracy in order to get polio prevention up and running, not to mention researching an unusual tropical disease, and the care of his other patients, and was just tired and didn't want to deal with more paperwork that night. Also, he's a doctor, she's a former nun, and they're already raising a child. What more could the agency need to know? I know, they need to know a lot more, but that was just his initial reaction that night. Adoption through the proper channels even then required a lot of paperwork, home visits, etc. And I believe that both Shelagh and Patrick would want to go through proper channels to adopt their child.
Sister Monica Joan confused me. She seemed to both condemn and embrace the science behind being able to see the earth from space. My grandfather, born in the late 1890's never believed that astronauts actually went in to space. He died before the moon landing in 1969, but he wouldn't have believed that either.
Loved Trixie's outing with the curate, and the Scouts. I was happy that the Irish couple married, and that he, the Roman Catholic, ran to get the Anglican (protestant) priest to baptize the baby.

In that time period, and to a certain extent, even today, priests (and ministers, etc.) and nuns are expected to be celibate until they marry. An Episcopal/Anglican priest can marry, and I have known a former Roman Catholic priest who became an Episcopal priest and married.
I agree, I don't think Sally was capable of consenting initially. And again, back then, it (premarital sex) happened, and happened a lot! but young women were still expected to be "good girls" and therefore virgins when they married. "Friends with benefits" was an alien concept.

How does having dark hair mean you can't look like a Jew from Germany (or Poland)? I know dark-haired people of Jewish heritage whose parents were from Germany. I will say, I thought the woman who was pregnant looked a bit Italian before I knew more about her, but I believed her as Jewish when the evidence pointed that way. I didn't notice the red string on the baby's wrist. I have read that Jews may touch the mezuzah whether entering or leaving the room.
This is the first episode that I have gotten more than a little teary-eyed over. The loss of any young person is incredibly sad. Jenny felt so bad that her last encounter with Alec was a fight, then he was recovering so nicely and they had mended the relationship, before suddenly he died.
It was nice to see Sister Winifred begin to experience the joy in helping a mother deliver her baby. I'm sure there is more backstory there, and I'm interested in learning more. It looks like another midwife arrives next week. I'd think it may be difficult for the new one to fit in, as no one could easily replace Jenny, but instead will have to find her own way.
