  1. Well if they want to take it on as carry-on luggage then 7kg... seriously I wonder if some of these bags are being checked in because they look much too big for carry-on!

Depends on the airline - some have higher weight restrictions, and some have no weight restriction, only size restrictions.

  2. Gordon and Grace:  Why would Harry have a problem with it?  He "married up" when he married Rose, and they seemed to be pretty happy.

Yes, but Harry may be concerned that Grace is "marrying up" just for the money and prestige.  It may be more usual for a woman to marry up than for a man, so it's logical to me that Grace would be involved with/marry Gordon, and there does seem to be a genuine mutual attraction there.

  3. I don't know about in the US, but in the UK in the county where my DD lives, a child placed with a family pending adoption can be baptized only if the family is given permission.  Once the child is adopted, of course the parents can have him or her baptized.  But since this was a dedication in a Unitarian church, and not a baptism, I doubt it would be a problem here in the US.

Love Braugher, and it was also great to see Leonard.  Also seeing Cragen made me smile.

Never having watched Orange is the New Black, I had to google to find out.  Wiley is beautiful, and she did an excellent job with her character.

  4. This show is amazingly complex. At the same moment that I was taken out of the scene by Jenny pumping her breast milk (huh? does that really happen?) I admired her so much for going with Claire in the scouting---the writers are great at getting you to scream one way and feel another! Love it.

Yes, that really happens.  But while I know it was necessary for Jenny to do it, I don't think it was necessary to show her doing, and definitely not necessary to linger on it that long.  I feel the same way about showing other bodily functions - yes we know they urinate and poop, but I don't want to watch it!

Mike/Rochelle had been able to do well at manual labor tasks in the past whereas dancing could result in a situation where they can literally not perform it for hours.  ...  Since they didn't show how many times they tried the dance, it was hard to gauge how far behind they were when they arrived at the roadblock.

I agree, unlike with Jelani/Jenny we didn't see how many attempts they had.  The editing made it seem like they got it on their third attempt but I highly doubt that, otherwise it would have said "3rd attempt" just like it did for Jelani/Jenny.  The editing also made it seem like they finished the dancing shortly after Tyler/Laura finished the bricks.  But Tyler and Laura finished the raft task and were gone by the time Mike and Rochelle even showed up.  I'm thinking they were significantly behind.

Before one of Rochelle and Mike's attempts, it was captioned 4th try, and they didn't get it that time; they had to do it at least twice more before they passed and were given the clue.

I am happy that they got into the final four.  Like so many, I'd like to see Blair win, but unfortunately that means that Hayley wins also.  I don't really like Tyler and Laura, so I wouldn't mind if they were the team eliminated.  That said, it does seem unlikely, but anything can happen.

  6. We've been watching NYPD on Audience on DirecTV.  It is great to see all the cast again after so many years.  I just loved how the characters evolved over the length of the series.  Andy is such a complex, layered, nuanced character, and so good with Theo.

  7. Remember Brooke and Claire from a few seasons ago?  I thought Brooke's screeching, Claire, Claire! was annoying.  I'd hate to have her and Haley in the same race.  C'mon Claire!  C'mon Blair!  I think my ears couldn't take it.

  8. I thought this episode was much stronger than the last one even though they are still bashing us over the head with the moral story of the week.  I loved that Sister Monica Joan was finally given a success story, and there was some fantastic acting by wonderful Judy Parfitt.  I am also glad Trixie broke off the engagement to that horribly wet curate.   I do wish they hadn't given her an alcohol problem as the reason though.  She is too good for that curate.

Thank you to the people who reminded me of "Shoulder to Shoulder."  I loved that series and the Suffragettes' March of the Women anthem (Bread and Roses was the Lawrence, MA textile workers strike).  By the way, I just checked and it looks as if the whole S to S series is on Youtube if anyone is interested.

Yes!  Very interested!  I found it and will be watching!

And right, I had forgotten that Bread and Roses was for the textile strike.  Thanks for setting the record straight.

As to Trixie, I hope she and Tom reconcile.  I think they're wonderful together.  At first I thought it an odd pairing, with her sense of style, fashion, and fun, and he, a man of the cloth, but now I think they are good for each other, and complement one another.

  9. The Sister Monica Joan scenes reminded me of a wonderful PBS series from the 1970s that has never been shown again in the U.S.--"Shoulder to Shoulder," about the women's-suffrage movement in England, with Sian Phillips (Livia!) and Patricia Quinn (Livilla!) as Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst. Judy Parfitt played an earl's sister who became involved with the movement and insisted on being treated like anyone else, for which she underwent a horrifying force-feeding in prison. Wonderful actresses and performances. So glad to see Parfitt as a competent Monica Joan.

I saw that! It was one of the first things I ever saw on PBS and I was hooked forever.  I have always wished I could see it again.  There were so many great series back then,  gone now.  One sister kept to the society end of the movement while the other more radical one got her hands dirty with the underclasses.  I could totally see Sr Monica Joan in the latter role.

I loved "Shoulder to Shoulder!"  I keep hoping against hope that it will be released for DVD or streaming - I would watch it again!  I didn't remember Parfitt from it; it would be great to see her as a young actor.  Also loved the song, "Bread and Roses."

Happy that Cynthia will be back.  I wonder what her new name will be as a Novice.

I think in the previews she was called Sister Mary Cynthia.  It will be good to have her back.

  10.

I'm not sure how realistic a witch trial in 1743 is either. Most witch trials ended in the 1600s and even Ned pointed out that laws against witchcraft had been repealed in Great Britain ten years earlier.

This may not have been a legal trial, more of a mob mentality with the charges trumped up to appease the citizens of the area.

There were still witch trials in the US well into the 18th century.  The last witch trial in Virginia was in 1802.

In this article from The Guardian, it's stated, "James I's statute was repealed in 1736 by George II. In Scotland, the church outlawed witchcraft in 1563 and 1,500 people were executed, the last, Janet Horne, in 1722."  but it doesn't say there were trials than didn't end in conviction and death, so in the 1740's there may or may not have been trials.  http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2007/jan/13/secondworldwar.world

  11. So glad the show is back! And improved.

Here in DC we are close to a lot of colonial history, but somehow I've never made it up to places like Valley Forge. It's thrilling to see these historical characters in the old houses and locations. I'm constantly distracted by the old-house porn.

Quite a few scenes from these episodes were filmed in Colonial Williamsburg.  I squeed when I recognized the marching field behind the Courthouse, with the steeple on Bruton Parish Church in the distance, the George Wythe House, etc.

I have trouble keeping some of the characters straight, but I'm learning.  Was it Anna who got the message sewn in the shirt by Abigail?  Is she pretending to be a Loyalist but is actually a Patriot?  Or do I have that all wrong?

  12. Another comment about this program, nothing was said about America Ferrara's mother.  She apparently raised a large family as a single mother abandoned by her husband.  I don't think they even said if she was living.  And she was from Guatemala as well, possibly the same village as her husband.

They were both from Honduras.  Perhaps America already knew about some of her mother's family history, so chose to focus on her father.  One does wonder if he had another family in Honduras.

The general was one of the most interesting relatives that have been featured.  There were a lot of conflicting emotions - proud that he stood up for his people, yet also concern over whether this morphed into power-grabbing.  Such a sad end for him, yet what he chose, it seems.

  13. Actually, this is still season 1, its just the second half of it.  I only mention it because another poster mentioned that the earlier episodes were season 1.  Season 2 will be the next book but there's no word yet on when that will be released.

Of course, that's correct.  It was so long ago, it just seemed like a separate season to me!

  14. Lastly I am so sick of Black Jack, he is so over the top villainous and disgusting. Jamie should have killed him when he had the chance.

Since this is time travel, if Black Jack had been killed, would his descendant, Frank Randall, have been born?  I think that's why Black Jack has to live.

I wonder if he agreed to Dougal ensuring his bloodline by fathering Hamish or if Dougal made that decision on his own.  I want to see more about this relationship and the politics.  I hope we eventually get to see if this clan fights at Culloden.

In one of the earlier season 1 episodes, IIRC, Claire and Frank visit the field at Culloden, and there are stone markers with the clan names.  Either MacKenzie or Fraser (or maybe both?) were shown on the marker(s).  I know there is a Fraser marker now.

    Italicized to denote edit...

  15. Thanks. So are there Anglican priests who are celibate, or is it just the nuns who are?

If an Anglican priest (at least in that time period) wasn't married, he (because at that time there were no female Anglican priests) was required to be celibate.  However, they were allowed to court and marry, or to be married before becoming a priest.

  16. I just watched "Pie Fight" and I can so relate!  I've been in Weight Watchers for nearly 5 years, and I know from experience how much my weight can fluctuate day-to-day.  I can easily gain 3 pounds overnight - it's not fat, it's usually water retention.  Just eating a salty meal can make me gain, again, water.  And it isn't easy, it's hard, and it's not fair!

Love that Mike opened up to the counselor without realizing he was doing so.  And Molly was great after she realized he was opening up and telling the uncomfortable truth to her.

I liked Monday night's episode also.  For a bit, I thought Carl and Samuel weren't going to be in it, so it was nice to see them at the bar.

I really like Molly and Mike together.  I'm happy that they seemed to have dialed back on Molly's pratfalls and obnoxious behavior.  Not that there still aren't moments.  But it's better now, IMHO.

  17. Yes, I also thought Trixie gave it to Sister Monica Joan, and I thought, what a lovely gesture!  Just as I was also appalled that SMJ took the entire plate of eclairs!  I remember the first episode, where Jenny was given so much cake by SMJ when she first arrived at Nonnatus house.

Thanks for "cleansing station" and explanation of where it was!

  18. The mother said she worked for a licensed establishment, which could mean a number of different things.

What was the name of the room at Nonnatus House where the children took the baths?  And since Nonnatus House moved locations, was the bathing room in the new location also?

  19. I will be at my table for one for liking Eddie. This show does not do well with female characters, but I like her. I might be biased because I like the actress Vanessa Ray. I do not care one way or another whether she and Jamie get together, but if they do I would rather them not be partners.

I also like the character Eddie.  I think she and Jamie are great as friends; I do not want to see them involved romantically.

My unpopular opinion is that I like the character Nicky.  She's not nearly as know-it-all obnoxious as some other teens I've seen portrayed on TV.  I wouldn't be bothered if we saw less of her when she goes to college next year, but for now, she's OK.

  20. I'm probably alone here, but the new champion looks like a grown up version of Axle Hecht from The Middle to me.  And yet, I find him likeable.

I like Axl Heck!  Even when he's annoyingly obnoxious, he's still funny.  Having seen the actor in Frozen River, I enjoy seeing him in other things.

  21. When the narrator mentioned the Child Migrant Program, I shuddered.  I recently watched a movie about the scheme, called Oranges and Sunshine, which delves into just how awful the program was.

Thanks for the mention of Oranges and Sunshine; I just added it to my Netflix queue.

My pbs station cut off the last few minutes.  Fortunately, there was another showing in the early morning hours, so I recorded it then, and just watched the last few minutes.

I think Trixie seemed very happy, if a bit surprised.  Watching Chummy try to drive with everyone watching was hilarious; glad Peter bailed her out.

I don't know if it's available here, but in England you can buy rose-flavored cream chocolates; they are quite lovely.  I think violet and other flavors are also available.

Glad this is back!  Although the stories may not come from the memoirs, it seems to me like the situations and characters are very much realistic, and such things weren't uncommon at the time.
