  1. About his name: People ask me about my name. My mother is Japanese and my father is American of German descent. My parents named me James Kenji Alt. I have always gone by Kenji. When my wife, Adriana López, and I got married, we both changed our last names to López-Alt. I am not latino in any way, though I do visit Colombia at least once a year and love food from all over Latin America. From his website, "About Kenji":
  2. I wasn't going to watch this season because I was fed up with all the SuperJune stuff, but I watched a couple of episodes on a plane and got hooked again. I'm much more interested in Serena, Lawrence, Janine, and Lydia at this point than I am in June, Luke, and Nick. Like many others, I was so annoyed with June for continuing to run in the street once she realized that car was following her. I thought of this Test Your Survival Skills question: You are a high profile refugee in a country with growing anti-refugee sentiment. You are walking down the middle of the street when you realize a car is following you with intent to harm you. Do you: A) run to the sidewalk and start running across lawns? B) turn around and run in the other direction? C) continue walking down the middle of the street, quickening your pace slightly? I admit I was stupidly pleased to see June and Serena on the train together.
  3. I was saddened when Ken pointed out that this was the last week of the season, especially in view of the uncertainties you've pointed out, But if they have to fill time with reruns, I'd much rather see some from the early Alex Trebek days in the 80's and 90's, where we don't know the outcome. Heck, I'd watch reruns from Art Fleming's time. Too bad the old daytime shows from the 60's were never preserved.
  4. I thought of grape flavored Tang when he said that. There are denominations that use grape juice instead of wine.
  5. I don’t often root against someone , but Carol’s demeanor was so glum you would think she was there under duress. I hope Alex sticks around awhile .
  6. I'm a sucker for long beautiful hair on men, so that was my shallow reason to root for Ryan. Well, that and the "Blessed are the cheesemakers" line from Life of Brian. But I have no problem with Donna defending her title.
  7. Yes, she seems to be a J! favorite. Female author + West = Willa Cather. I was surprised only one of the three got it right.
  8. Guess who also made Queen Bee yesterday? 🤩 I was fine with Suzanne winning, too, though I wish Holly could have stayed a bit longer. She reminded me of a more cheerful Frances McDormand.
  9. I came up with the right answer for the wrong reason, figuring it had something to do with New Amsterdam becoming New York. I conflated that transfer of power with the selling of Manhattan Island to the Dutch. I thought it was going to be an Allison runaway until that late run and successful DD wager by Suresh.
  10. With all of those first round categories being the titles of Stephen Sondheim musicals, how could they not have a category on Sondheim? Yes, those were a lot of TS's. It's almost--almost!--enough to make me wish for another superchamp to crush the lackluster players before the first commercial break.
  11. My first thought was baseball for tonight’s FJ also, but I knew the year was wrong and A League of their Own wasn’t a franchise film. I thought of karate because of the Karate Kid films, thinking that there had been one where the Kid was a girl. There was—but it came out in 1994, ironically the same year as A League. Hilary Swank was the girl Kid. The champ reminds me of Angie Harmon.
  12. I knew FJ only because I dredged up a memory of learning in middle school music class that Liszt’s daughter Cosima married Wagner. That seemed unlike many FJ clues where it’s possible to deduce the answer even if you don’t know a specific fact. I wasn’t surprised it was a TS. I am glad I wasn’t the only one who found both Lynn and Joyce slow pickers.
  13. I was thinking the same thing. I was so sure his name was Benedict. I was irked by her slowness at first, but she picked up the pace and impressed me in DJ.
  14. I thought Ben seemed vulnerable for the first time last night. If Erica and/or Chris had answered a few more questions correctly, they would have avoided another runaway. Although it didn’t change the outcome, I did wonder if Erica should have received credit for “Appalachin” Trail. I know spelling errors don’t count if the pronunciation isn’t changed, but I thought the pronunciation is different if you omit the last “a.”
  15. FJ seems so obvious now, but I zeroed in on the name of Herb Alpert and thought, "Herb Alpert = Tijuana Brass = Mexico = Taco Bell."
  16. My favorite "dingo ate my baby" joke (ugh, that sounds awful) was on Frasier with the "flour child" episode. Eddie the dog chewed up Niles's flour sack baby. I've noticed Mayim's chuckles and giggles with irritation also, but they're not as frequent as before. As for "Awesome," we used to gripe about Alex's "Good for you!" I personally would be hard pressed to come up with non-repetitive ways to wrap up a one-minute interview.
  17. I missed the game and watched on YouTube, which for some reason skipped over the Mythology category entirely. I wasn't pleased with that, especially since it was the source of controversy. Viewers are arguing that Paul was robbed by being ruled incorrect for "Eros." Even though he got the money back, he lost the control of the board at a crucial time. Story here.
  18. Thank you for the info. Nothing against any of the contestants, but it feels as though we just saw most of them in the Tournament of Champions. And how many more times do we need to see James Holzhauer?
  19. She was apparently known by many different names, including Nimue, Vivian, and Elaine. I knew Martha Mitchell, the Lady of the Lake, above and beyond the call of duty, Heliopolis, the sour grapes DD, Russell Crowe, celery, The Waste Land, and Jean Rhys. For FJ I thought first of Suleiman and then of Genghis Khan. The "above and beyond" phrase reminded me of a former school job where they would give out "ABCD awards" at faculty meetings, for those who did extra things. I also thought of the name Abcde (pronounced AB-city). A Southwest Airlines gate agent got in trouble back in 2018 for making fun of the name.
  20. It was good to have a FJ about antiquity after last night. I was surprised that two out of the three got it right; I didn’t think that the Praetorian Guard was that well known. Great comeback by Emma; I was sure she was a goner after the first round.
  21. After feeling very smug about knowing “hope” on Wednesday night, I was totally stumped last evening. But congrats to Emma.
  22. I thought that the whole "It was in Vivian Vance's contract to be overweight" story was an urban legend. Story on Snopes. As for Jeanie, we may cringe today over the "master" business, but Jeanie generally did what she wanted regardless of Tony's "orders." Regarding Quantum Leap: It's been awhile since I watched, but was it ever implied that Sam had sex while in someone else's body? I've only seen one episode of the reboot, so I don't know if the issue was ever raised there.
  23. Me too! I guess he was the last one of "the usual gang of idiots" whose artwork for Mad I grew up with in the 60's. I always enjoyed his Fold-Ins on the inside back cover and his "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions." It was great that he lived to be 102, though.
  24. I figured out FJ! Go me!! Driving Miss Daisy is one of those movies that always seems to make the “Undeserving Oscars” lists that come out every February.
  25. Hard to say; Ken seemed to take her story at face value.
