The most conspicuous aspect of the Kardashians' voices is vocal fry, but they are also from Southern California. I don't hear vocal fry from Jiwan, but being from San Diego, it's possible he does have some SoCal vowels that might sound similar to the Kardashians. I don't hear similarities between them, but that to one who does, I suspect it's just recognizing a general SoCal-ness to it.

That's interesting, @theatremouse. I had no idea how to describe what it is that they do, but your mention of the vowels is definitely the thing that I find so unpleasant. I don't really notice vocal fry unless others point it out, but the drawing out of the vowels or whatever the hell it is just grates.

I think both the boys just have gay "accents." I don't know what the Kards sound like either.

There are lots of gay guys on the thoroughly ridiculous amount of baking shows I watch, and offhand I don't recall any of them having this effect on me - that is, wanting to punch someone in the face. Jason didn't speak this way. But I don't think it's a coincidence that the gay guys are the ones doing it either.

i actually don't know what the Kardashians sound like (amazing, right?) but Jiwan certainly has an American Accent (which I will maintain that I, an American myself, do not :) ) So I think I know what you mean :)

@dleighg, I would also call it a Valley girl accent, but I figured that would be showing my age, lol

I keep getting surprised that Jiwan sounds like the absolute American he is, rather than sounding British (since so many SE Asians have appeared on the British show with their adorable accents).

I think Jiwan and Chris sound like freakin' Kardashians. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. Part of what makes the GBBS so charming is the lovely accents. A Kardashian accent is anything but charming. I was so glad to see Chris go because his is definitely the worse of the two.

This article won a Pulitzer.  It's in multiple parts, and long, but a good read.  You may have to go back to the first page to find the different chapters.  As it's archived ,you may not be able to get from one to the other as easily.  It's about the Rogers women.  There's also a book about them titled "Death Cruise" that is a really good read.

This is one of those cases that has always haunted me, such horrific deaths.

On a more shallow note, I loved Mike's jacket/shirt/tie combo. in this episode, but Leah's lips were looking more grotesque than usual.  The clip of her 20 years ago made me realize just how ridiculous they look now.  I don't know what kind of "lip dysmorphic disorder" makes a woman think she needs lip injections when she already has beautiful lips.  That look will not age well on her, I hate to say.

I could really see the resemblance between Leah and her family in that old clip. It was such a contrast. It's been obvious for a while now that she's been messing with her face, but she's at that point where the effect is starting to make her look odd, not younger.

  7. I wasn't going to watch the Gacy show because, like, what else can they say about it? But it was from the angle of cold case detectives trying to identify the last eight unknown victims through modern technology. I thought it was very compelling. Glad I didn't skip it.

The term she used that I thought was odd was "unctuous". I wonder if she meant to say scrumtious (a la Mary's "scrummy") instead.  Unctuous is certainly an inappropriate term for food!

I was always familiar with unctuous being used to describe a person, not food. But after consulting Webster's, apparently it's overly greasy food. I'm remembering her using it in a positive sense though, so it doesn't seem like she used it correctly to refer to food either. But maybe I'm misremembering.

  9. I want to know what the hell was up with that "game" where he bound the kids up with tape (painters tape?) and took pictures of those poor babies crying. Fucking hell. I seriously hope he is not faring well in prison being an ex-police officer.

  10. My cable was out, and I missed the first episode of Cold Valley. I thought I'd tape the second, and I figured they'd give enough info to know what's going on. I've grown tired of these cold case, multi-episode specials because nothing ever seems to  be resolved and there's always these ridiculous teasers that never pan out.

When the female LE officer was going on about the abandoned fridge before a commercial, I knew there was nothing in that damn fridge. And sure enough, when they came back, shades of Geraldo and Al Capone's vault. I bailed after that. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, well, you won't because I don't fall for that shit anymore.

  11. (Moving my post over here too)

The guy that won last week wasn't my favorite, but the lady who won this week was the one I thought deserved it. I like the judges for the most part.

I'm not familiar with the female judges, but the older lady really seems to know her stuff. And good to see whathisname from whichever baking show that was he won - lol. Marcela seems so different on this show than the other baking shows I've seen her on - so carefree and lighthearted.

The thing I'm dying to know is how the lady who did the New Orleans inspired gingerbread theme on the last show managed to elevate the humble rice krispies treat.

  13. I read so much about this episode before I ever saw it and read the comments here before I watched it, so I was all prepared that this fight to end all fights was what broke up the friendship. I was surprised to realize that Jenny was not done with Jeff. She thought the conversation at the restaurant was to kiss and make up. The real deal-breaker was Jeff letting her go. So whatever has been said about Jeff going too far this time is not true.

I don't know whether Jenny really filed a complaint, lawsuit against Jeff for his hostile work environment, but when there's video footage of your devastation at being let go when you intended to keep working there, that wouldn't seem to help your case.

Or maybe I'm not awake enough yet to be posting and need to drink some coffee.

Did anyone see the latest episode of Shattered? I was so annoyed with the pastor who claimed that Jessica's death was the work of the Devil? God gives us free will pastor. I can't wait to see the ID special on John Wayne Gacy.

That guy was so weird. He just didn't seem genuine at all. Or he's a total bozo. "Oh, we just loved reading our scriptures and singing hymns and taking selfies, and then, OMG, he raped and murdered a woman. I hate when Satan makes people do that. But he's an awesome dude, and I can't wait till he gets out of prison so we can worship together like the old days."

  15. Most of us here, especially Televison Without Pity alum, let the snark fly. And I don't think people, in general, when commenting on reality shows really think of the people as "real." They're characters on a show.  So I hope you don't take it too personally @Sherrytheannoying.

If you don't mind, I'm curious who your favorite judge was, and what the filming schedule was like. Did you tape a show a day, a week? Something else?

I really should have gone the first episode.

I don't know if this is really Sherry, but as I was reading the comments, I felt like I was watching a different show than everybody else because I thought Sherry was hysterical and was bummed she was the one to go home. Her interactions with Jessie were so funny. If I ate sweets, I'd love to go to her house for a cup of BLACK coffee and dessert, no green apple syrup.

Collier Boyle - I feel really bad for him but I think he really needs to move on.  The father is a lying asshole - Collier clearly knows this.  I realize he's your father but he doesn't care about you at all - he proved that when he returned your letter.  The only reason he let you back into his life was because he needs you in his breast pocket for the probation board.

I've never been through something this awful but I just can't understand why he can't walk away from his father.

Also, I think its awful that none of the family took the 2 kids in, and instead separated them - and also not maintaining the sibling relationship.

Collier really got a raw deal in all this.  I really wish he could find a way to feel whole.

I totally agree, sskrill. I really hope he can move on. If he can make a connection with his sister, that would be nice, if that's what she wants as well. I wonder about the half sibling that the girlfriend was pregnant with and if there's any relationship there. Either way, I hope he's able to find someone and have a family of his own.

I also thought she "cheated" a bit by only having a couple of treats left by setting the "scene date" just before Christmas. I was surprised that none of the judges said (at least as we saw it) that "it looks nothing like an advent calendar".

Who was it that stuck some hard candies in as at least some of the treats? I didn't see that in the reveals.

I think that was round advent calendar lady too (who apparently was separated at birth from Anna Paquin)
