Perhaps it's a generational thing.  The original Murphy Brown (which I was old enough to watch...and loved) was ALL about commenting on the political climate of that day.  It's what the show does, it's who Murphy Brown is.  This is precisely why the show works for me.  The people in the background were at the bar for drinks or food.  I didn't expect them to stop what they were doing, forks in mid-air, to catch what was intended as a private conversation.

I watched & enjoyed the original.  It was preachy, too, but it didn't bother me at the time.  Maybe it was less "in your face"?.  I haven't seen old episodes in years, so I don't know if I would still like it.

Regarding the people in the background:  Two well known people are having an argument at the bar, you wouldn't have a look?

The Cagney & Lacey mention wasn't cute, either.  It was an eye-rolling moment.  Oh, and "slugger" - have they covered everything now?  Perhaps, there will be reference to Pookie next time.

I’m clearly in the minority because I didn’t care for this episode at all.  Too preachy, as is becoming the pattern, and it was unrealistic to think that Murphy’s attack, however sharp and clever, would’ve really had much of an impact on the writer, who’s surely heard it all before.  I also didn’t care for Jim’s appearance.  Meanwhile, again in the minority, while I don’t like the character of Diana, I LOVE Merle Dandridge and would love to see more of her.

Well, I guess you are in a minority of two.  This show is just not working for me.  Preachy is the word, all right.   So cliché.   I didn't feel that Murphy's confrontation was sharp or clever.  I noticed the people in the background at the bar were paying no attention to them, whatsoever.  One thing - I will say that the wardrobe on the characters is fabulous.  In any case, I think I'm out, just a waste of time.

I see this all the time...in fact, I just watched an episode of a show where it happened twice!

A person comes to the door of someone's house (bonus points if it is a large house).  They ring the doorbell and wait about 3 seconds.  Then they knock and wait about 3 seconds.  Then they open the door and walk right into the house saying, "Hello?  Anyone home?"

First of all, give it a good 20-30 seconds before re-ringing the doorbell or switching to knocking.  Secondly, don't just walk into someone's house.  I mean, who does that? (Besides burglars, of course...)

That's why my front door is always locked.  LOL

My guess is most media people who cover politics follow people like that.

I would agree. Just because you follow someone, doesn't mean you are a follower (if you know what I mean).

  5. I'll give it one more chance tonight.  Hope it's not full of moral superiority.  I would prefer it to be full of laughs.  You can have laughs while making a point, but this show isn't doing it.

Oh gawd, I just saw that Jim is returning.  Cue the screaming & sobbing.  I'm not sure I can take it.

Even though I agree with (most of) his politics and can appreciate his quick wit, man does Alex Baldwin bug the shit out of me.

I've seen him on "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" & he's pretty funny.  Some people are naturally witty - Tom Hanks, for example.  Alec Baldwin does have some issues with his temper, for sure.

For context, a pic of what it looked like watching from home for most viewers.

Oh, jeeze, you had to do that!   :o)  I  didn't see the show, so I was going by MM's post,  & she looked quite nice.  Not a good style for sitting.  They aren't doing her any favors by putting her on the end (the little devils).

So how the hell did the gay couple with the dogs afford that multimillion dollar Los Angeles home? Didn't they tell us that one worked for the prosecutor's office, and the other was a teacher?

The writers really are convinced that everyone lives in outrageous luxury.

    Family money?

Wow. Alone again in not liking this episode. Kind of funny that everyone thinks this season is super good. Really? What am I missing?

I liked it (except Jay & Gloria are wearing on me).  I have found this season better than the previous couple of seasons, So maybe it's funny by comparison.  I wouldn't say "super good", but it's on the right track.  I have been pleasantly suprised.

“ It's a character that we'll all be sad to see go, but it's probably not an older character that you think is going to go," Winter told "Entertainment Tonight."

One hopes that it's Ariel Winter's character!  But seriously, I hope they don't go this way.  It's a comedy.  If I want to see that kind of crap, I'll watch "This is Us"  blah!

Although, they did it with Phil's mother.

Uh…is it just me or is this season really good so far? It’s like all the abysmal writers from season 9 got fired and they re-hired the early seasons writers. (I have no idea who the writers are; maybe it’s been the same people all along.)

But seriously, this was a great episode. I could have cut out the Manny/Gloria/Jay subplot, but there’s usually one that is superfluous. Still. I liked the trendy childfree couple. The scene of Phil and Claire explaining what they saw in each other was cute. The scene of Mitchell gnawing on Cam’s ankle made me laugh.  And HungJuries.com. Heh.

I didn't even notice Luke was missing. And Alex, totally forgot about her too. The kids continue to be annoying. They’re writing the little ones like middle aged men and writing Lily too young. She’s almost in high school. Old enough not to loudly whine “Daddy, I’m booored” right in front of her parents’ hosts. Then again she’s always been a brat.

Thank God Haley dumped that awkward loser. Yay for Dylan. A better match for Haley in every way.

Absolutely agree with you on just about everything.  I'm happy that Dylan is back.  He is well suited for Haley.  I like Lily, so I find her funny most of the time.  Alex & Luke have been annoying for a while so didn't miss them.  So far, so good for this season!

How funny you mention that, backformore.  The same happens to me, and - though I didn't fall for the click-bait - it did inspire me to google EH to see what she's been up to.  It's pretty much what you'd expect - lots of stuff with the kids, but apparently she's also been doing a lot of mission work in Haiti along with daughter Grace.  At least she's not on my TV anymore...YAY!

    Mission work?   Poor Haitians!

Whenever the topic of marriage or living with someone, Whoopie always says, “Listen!  I’ve been there!  I’ve done that!”  Umm, everyone else at the table is married.  They are all currently doing that.  There’s nothing rare about it.

We know her track record.  Who cares?

I was only half-listening to today's show, did Whoopi indicate that her trip to London was to attend the latest Royal wedding?  She said something about being a friend of the bride's family and then Meghan was off on her Anti-Royal tangent, and I was scratching my head wondering  "Is Whoopi a friend of Fergie's"?!

I don’t think she was at the wedding.  She is a type of minor celebrity that Fergie would think is classy, though.

Meanwhile Abby is just...not really working? Can’t put my finger on it. I like her and think she tries to be as neutral as can be, but I feel like I don’t know her.

I'm finding her OK so far.  She just started on the show, so she has to find her groove.

Meghan learned a new word.  Nebulous.   She said politics isn't nebulous.  She sounds like a someone trying so hard to sound smart and missing the mark.

Maybe hubby texts her the “word of the day” ?
