Yes, I've always found that peculiar. Larry moves to L.A. and meets his new gf online (?) and she lives 3000 miles away. There are so many beautiful women in L.A. so it does seem odd that Larry chose a woman who lives so far away. But close to the state that he moved away from! Lol

Larry is kind of repulsive, so maybe 3000 miles is close enough.

The media is largely responsible for the situation that we are in as a country.

I have to agree that they over-cover certain things.  Nobody would pay attention to nitwits if they weren't covered ad nauseum.  We don't need panel discussions on every aspect of pop culture.

I completely agree with Abby about the media giving certain things too much attention in the name of keeping up. Why is Kanye in the white house or Kanye holding up an SNL audience making news on major news outlets that are supposed to be dedicated to trustworthy journalism? The media is complaining about the news when they are actively the reason that certain things BECOME big news in the first place.

    Exactly!

What is with the bouquet pumping (like celebrating a hockey win)? To me, it seems so vulgar and unfeminine. Is it just me?

Everyone seems to do this now.  I saw it for the first time at my niece's wedding 11 years ago, & thought "WTF".

I know I'm in the minority, but I dont consider her beautiful at all. She has very severe angles to her face and needs more softness. I dont know if that is natural or not. She wears clothes well and I like her hair.

Her eyes bother me.  They’re so tiny, she seems to be squinting all the time.  Very unattractive “bear” eyes.

"Money Can't Buy You Class," sings the classless Countess Luann.       Melania has natural beauty and a good figure.  She may have evolved into the appearance of class because she has unlimited funds at her disposal.  Sometimes she appears to be classy...and then she makes silly* mistakes that show she may simply be selfish and entitled.

*She also has speechwriters, a spokesperson, and a staff that does everything to ensure that she appears intelligent and "classy."

I wouldn’t use the word “classy” - she’s well dressed and well groomed.  She’s more robotic than classy.  Just goes to show that you can’t buy class.

  6. Just watched an old one.  Loved it.  The one with Marie"s $160,000 wedding in Manhattan (Dracula theme).  The volunteer firefighter on Fire Island (liked her the best), another Indian bride (Pnina dress) & Jewish groom, and the one where they announced the pregnancy (tacky).  So great to see the look on Marie's face when she came last - such a nasty woman with a tasteless wedding.  But, America knows she was robbed!

And not to pile on poor Melania, but I it's funny for her to say to the press, don't pay attention to the clothes I wear, but to what I do. This from someone who wears a jacket that indicates she doesn't care when she visits a children's detention camp, wears a colonial outfit with a pith helmet, and she poses in Egypt with a cutesy Egyptian 1920's  archaeological movie type costume. "Be Best" Africa, while I preen for the camera!

She exists to have her photo taken.  That’s fine but let’s not pretend there’s anything deeper going on.  The outfits in Africa were ridiculous.  She can shop at Macy’s if she doesn’t want attention paid to her clothing.

I think she’s really out of her depth.  I guess she does the best she can with what she has.

First Ladies should probably NOT pose nude.   I don't mind what Melania did before she did Donald Trump--and long before she was a First Lady.  I just don't want her or her husband to degrade women who have jobs that are legal in America and not that different from what Melania did as a single female.  Mum's the word, Mr. President and Mrs. Trump.

Well said.  That’s it in a nutshell!

Didn't you watch Murphy Brown in the old days, though? You seemed to be a fan in the past.

Oh well, different strokes and all that. Don't want anyone mad at me. :) (And, in all honesty, I have little to no interest in anything by Larry David. Maybe I'll change my mind someday, but all the attention surrounding him and his shows has always put me right off. Ditto the Harry Potter books.)

I really need to catch up with the show on Antenna TV. I haven't seen nearly enough of it outside of the season 1 DVD (and the episode with Murphy's baby shower, which my mom taped from the original broadcast in 1992). I watched it on Nick at Nite back in the day, but not nearly enough.

I did watch the show in the past and liked it well enough.  They kind of lost me with her pregnancy.  I’m remembering it being funnier back in the Stone Age, but haven’t seen an episode in years.  I don’t think the new version is particularly good, humor wise or acting wise. Maybe I’m just old and crotchety.

Curb your Enthusiasm has me rolling on the floor.

  10. I guess we can speculate on why Murphy behaved as she did.  My take is that it’s out of character for her & the show is trying to capitalize on the current climate.  I don’t like being manipulated & the show needs more funny & less preach.

There are plenty of sitcoms that tackle serious issues with a dash of humor. All in the Family was one, this show is another. Both, I think, are examples of shows that largely got it right, but obviously mileage varies.

    Anyway:

I'm going to burst into tears when Jim comes back next week and calls Murphy "Slugger", I just know it. I always loved it when he called her that.

I'll go along with Larry David's philosophy:  "No hugging, no learning" - don't need pathos on sitcoms.

  12. Murphy’s mother was a tough, strong woman, so I’m sure Murph wasn’t a babe in the woods.  I think in the instance that they outlined on the show, Mary Richards could have handled it.  Nothing happened other than disillusion, so I doubt she is traumatized 50 years later.

Standing up and telling him off, maybe not.  Running like hell, for sure!  And it would not have been a secret, either.  The word spread would have been along the lines of, “Do you know what that asshole tried to pull?”  I am of that time, and we were not timid hothouse flowers.  You had to look out for yourself.

  13. Avery being called out for an incident in his past is a great idea!

I agree that Murphy would have figured out where her prof was coming from.  That situation did not ring true.  They are trying too hard to be current and relevant.

I disagree with that.  I'm firmly on the left, and I think there's plenty in the state of our politics now which can be joked about, even if the subject matter is heavy and emotional.  (Exhibit #1: SNL)  My problem is that the current iteration of Murphy Brown just isn't doing it well enough to keep me watching because it simply hasn't been all that funny.

Absolutely agree!  I have a dark sense of humor & can/will laugh at a lot of things, but MB needs new writers (or something).
