Although I'm not, the real comeback here is "No, We're Jewish". Also I made the Santa thing so obviously a pretend that at age 3 my kid told me she didn't believe in Santa because we, her parents, gave her presents for all the other occasions and she couldn't see why some dude she never met would suddenly decide to sneak into her house and give her something. I was never big on the Easter Bunny, why should some very cute animal with long ears get credit for my work making Easter special.

S01.E18: Tricks of the Trade Parts 1 & 2

Interesting, I hadn't heard that. If they have mentioned a brother, it was a blink and miss it moment and I missed it. OTOH,depending on when the actual press release was posted, it may have been planned in the early stages and then dropped. I was surprised to read that Jamie Sheridan was cast as Senior in the pilot and when the show finally got picked up, either he or the show decided he wasn't right for the part and they recast. They didn't reshoot the scenes with Bridges, they simply found a way to insert him into the scenes he was in. It does leave me wondering how Sheridan would have played Senior. -

Well, unless senior has another, older son, senior implies pretty strongly that he is Julian Sr. and Julian is Julian Jr. I can't think of other contexts where senior is used as a name, but I could be forgetting something. -

By all accounts, she was ready to retire from acting and thought the pilot was really good, so she signed on. She's 75 and the show is right, women of that age are invisible. The part is meaty and layered. Matty is complex and Kathy Bates has been given a chance to do top notch work. Telenovelas, and soap operas have been demeaned for years because they are considered "women's shows" and because women are often the focus of the storyline, when often the acting and stories can be engrossing and excellent. You don't like the way this is going, then you are probably right, this isn't the show for you. Not my thing is a perfectly acceptable reason to quit watching a show. If enough people agree, the show will be canceled. If enough people like the show, it will go on. -

I agree that Matty deserves to get her chance to continue to practice law and move into litigation. As to why not stay there, currently Olympia wants Matty gone from the firm and Matty doesn't have contacts with other firms in the area to move to. She does have ties and contacts back in San Francisco and has a better chance of recovering her career there. I'm sure she will have a reason to stay with Jacobson, Moore because the cast is remaining intact and they can't ALL move to San Francisco. However, at this point in the story it is logical that Matty would figure she needed to go back home to restart her career. -

DNA test makes sense. The legal parts of the show have been down right wrong at times, but I don't think they would ignore proving if this guy is the dad by doing a test. I'm guessing he is, but if not, then it may open a story where Matty and Edwin realize that Alfie and they NEED to find out about Alfie's father. I agree, the theme of next season may well be can people change and if they do what behavior can be waived away and what can't. Certainly this year's theme is that people can be two things at the same time, including Julian, who is a good father, a mostly loving husband and who hid the Wellbrexa file because he wanted his dad to love him. -
Thank you! The intense negativity towards Ellie just baffles me. On one hand people want Matty to go on and on about how this was all Ellie's fault and she should not CARE that a billion dollar company deliberately made money by encouraging addiction because addicts don't deserve to be seen as anything other than wrong and weak. Addiction is a DISEASE, not a moral failing. I have never heard of a kid saying "I want to grow up to be an addict". I haven't had addicts in my life, but I'm pretty sure they didn't wake up one morning and decide that yes, they wanted to be an addict. I suspect they were in pain, either physical or emotional and they found something that they believed could take that pain away. What they chose is addictive. So in the end, I don't CARE if Ellie got started due to an accident and was prescribed the drug by a physician to control pain, although it does make Matty's crusade more explicable. I care that a young woman was in pain, tried to stop it and found a drug that was made to relieve pain AND MADE to addict, because the more they are addicted, the more you sell. See also cigarettes and alcohol. It is terribly negligent. My ex's mother always told the kids that her dad had heart issues that left him confined to bed and unable to work. That he finally died and her mother died shortly after. What really happened was her mother couldn't take the pressure and she killed him and then herself. The kids grew up with no idea that they might need to look out for signs of depression or other mental health issues. That led to my ex not being treated properly for years for depression. It led to my brother-in-law working on his hobby one night and having his teen aged son say "Dad, look at this" and show him that he had slit his wrists. Lying because it's gentler doesn't help. Yes, start small and give more details as they become age appropriate, but lying forever isn't kind, it's cruel.
-
NO! NO! NO! NO! Jeeze, you don't lie to your kids. Eventually they find out and they realize they can't trust you, because you LIED to them. Yes, he should have and probably was told in more gentle ways. Mommy took too much of some medicine and she died, when the kid is young. Later when being asked what medicine, get more specific, still truthful, but still gentle. Mom got sick and the medicine made her feel better, but she didn't stop taking it and eventually she took too much and died. At some point you bring up addiction.
-
Nothing in the show supports this. We SAW Matty tell Alfie that her mother was an alcoholic and that the genetics that make addiction more likely were part of the reason Ellie became an addict. We saw Matty WIN CUSTODY OF ALFIE because she saw Ellie was unable to be a good mother to him. We know that 14 years ago documents went missing that could have forced these opiates off the market, or at least increased regulation on them. So when Matty and Edwin took custody there was not HINT that Wellbrexa had played dirty to keep their cash cow on the market. It is POSSIBLE that once the problems of Wellbrexa's opioid became public, Matty blamed Wellbrexa. I think what we have been shown is when Alfie came across the Reddit post,THAT is when Matty and the family started focusing on putting the responsibility for the addictions on the law firm that helped Wellbrexa keep marketing a dangerous drug by hiding evidence. Yes, deaths plural, Matty has ALWAYS talked about ALL the hundreds of thousands of deaths that occurred, not just Ellie.
-
I guess it depends on when these documents were being withheld. In discovery for a lawsuit, yes, it's unlikely that there would be criminal repercussions. If, this is similar to what happened in real life, the FDA needed documents for approval of a drug, which is far more regulated than an Energy Drink. Again, IRL, at some point the FDA was getting complaints about the addictiveness of fentanyl and were asked for studies relevant to that question. Withholding documents that are subpoenaed by the Federal Government is different from regular discovery. Whether there would be actual jail time is questionable, but it should have been a much more serious offense. Withholding those documents would possibly be aiding Wellbrexa in breaking the law.

Many, many people don't read the back of a prescription medicine. The doctor says take this, it's what will work and they take it, expecting it to work. For example, I've been taking thyroid medicine for 45+ years. It's easier to take my meds at night, so I do. About 3 years ago, surfing the Internet I found out they say to take it in the morning. In 45+ years NO ONE, not my doctor, not my pharmacist told me to take it in the mornings. I did ask my doctor and he basically said, since taking it at night is working and keeping my levels where they should be, keep doing it. Like it or not, Purdue Pharmaceuticals er Wellbrexa (so we don't get sued) created a strong pain reliever, discovered it was very addictive and then got it on the market by LYING about it's addictiveness, in fact, it was marketed as being not very addictive and doctors should keep their patients on it as long as "necessary". They lied about how long it would control pain, claiming 12 hours when knowing it was only 8 hours and so people would take it more frequently. They recommended doctors prescribe high doses of the drug instead of lower doses making addiction more likely. They hid evidence of studies showing the issues with the drug. The company set out to MAKE addicts so that they could make money. It's human nature to want to believe that addicts, alcoholics, substance abusers are BAD, WEAK people who just became addicts because of their own weakness. If that is the case then we, the strong, good people and our kids, the strong, good people will never fall victim to this. It really is far more complicated than this. Also, once someone becomes addicted, it is very, very hard to escape. I am totally in favor of going after people who make a product, know it can and will cause addiction and death and who do everything they can to keep it on the market just to make more money. THEY are the BAD PEOPLE because their only "addiction" is to money.

She also has a ton of money and a retired husband who takes care of Alfie. Pre-teen is a good age to go back to work. They can take care of themselves to some extent. They are in school 6 hours a day. Other than making sure there is someone there for emergencies, kids that age can be independent. Matty is pretty healthy so she can do most of the work, which is not highly physical.

Abusers don't think of themselves as abusers. I'm sure he saw himself in the role of white knight who would Save Her Soul once they were married and he could show her the light. I didn't see himself as a controlling jerk, he saw himself as being right and she just didn't understand how right he was.

I think it would be easy for Olympia to not know IF Julian was responsible. She loved him. She thought and still thinks that he is honorable. His family has money, so coming up with the down payment for a nicer house wouldn't necessarily raise red flags. I'm sure lots of trust fund kids are very "I'll make it on my own" and then when they realize they are looking at 2 floor walk up or a really nice house, they decide they can ask Mom and Dad to give them a down payment. That said, I don't think it's Julian. They have made him look too guilty. I think the entire "it could only have been one of these people" is an assumption Mrs. B made and she may be wrong. We will find out next week.

The show did not mention this before, which is why this forum has been debating this for a while. We were trying to figure out how she could do all this, not be in trouble legally AND not have all the cases she worked on in danger. I give the show runners a world of credit for 1) Having planned for these questions and 2) Giving the audience credit that they would start asking these questions as the show went on. IMO this was good writing and good planning all around. It gave the audience something to think about and wonder about as far as how Matty could get away with her ploy AND they had an answer waiting for the right moment to reveal. On another topic, I really, really hope it wasn't Julian who stole the files. I like him. I like the fact that he and Olympia have a civil divorce and are good co-parents. I hope there can be another explanation for all of this. Maybe someone signing the fire drill papers then going back in in the hubbub.
-
To be fair, Mattie didn't jump to the conclusion, Mrs. B did. Mattie has taken her word and really hasn't had time to think about other explanations. Now the Olympia knows she's not on the level, Olympia may be able to shed more light on ways someone could have taken those files. Right now, we do know the exact time frame of the files going missing, because Mrs. B had them before the fire drill and they were gone when she came back. Any other explanation for how this could have happened may come up and give us more suspects.

I'm guessing that Matty said "Adam" brought Barry back after having had a great time.

I was thinking about this today. We do know that Matty WAS a lawyer who practiced 30 years ago. That means she was a licensed attorney in her state. In order to keep her license she would have to 1) Pay the fee to the State Bar Association, which she has the money to handle easily 2) Meet the Continuing Legal Education requirements which means paying for the classes and showing up for them. Some states have self-study classes where you login to a Web presentation whenever is convenient and do whatever they require to prove you didn't just turn the presentation on and then leave. Again, this would be easy for Matty. Many lawyers keep up their bar membership until they die, just in case. The bigger issue is using the name Madeleine Matlock. If they hadn't made the point that they chose the name based on the TV show, this could be hand waved if Matty's maiden name was Matlock and she passed the bar using that name and practiced under it. In that case, although she misrepresented her background to the firm, she might well be clear legally. Women can and do practice law under their maiden names while using their married names in social situations. I suppose she could also have applied for a name change before she started this deceit just to cover herself legally i.e. she is practicing under her legal name. As long as she reported it to the Bar Association, she should be clear. Or so Google tells me.

My impression was that Mrs Belvin was "protecting" Barry Manilow from the anonymous caller by hiding him with Matty. Yes, no dental procedure, but putting Barry someplace safe so she could say no to the caller safely.
-
Yeah, I've been able to accept Matty's bad behavior before, by acknowledging that the show wants us to know she is behaving badly and hurting people in her obsession to find the truth, but, as a pet owner and lover, threatening Barry Manilow was over the line, especially since they just had to throw a red hat on Edwin and have him make the meeting. Agreed. Only employees would have been required to sing the sheet. Visiting clients, especially from Wellbrexa might sign the sheet but if they didn't who would know? Consultants like Shae could have skipped signing the sheet and Mrs. Belvin wouldn't know because they aren't there every day, so not being on the sheet wouldn't seem odd. Heck, it's a large firm in a large building, someone could have signed the sheet then sneaked back in to the building. This does make Shae look more like the guilty party. Her obviously true hatred of people who lie could be based on her feeling guilty for what she did all those years ago. People can change after making one huge mistake. The fire drill sign in sheet is far less probative than it seems at first glance. I am looking forward to the next 3 episodes. This is great TV.

Taking the high end idea that the firm takes 50% that leave $35 million to be distributed between 1000 plaintiffs. Each one gets $35,000 not as much as they could have if they had sued individually, but they get it without having to do any work. As others have said the firm usually only gets 33%, but 50% was easier for me to calculate, but the victims would have gotten more than the $35,000. Plus, if they want to go it on their own, they don't sign onto the settlement, hire their own lawyers and take their chances.

It's hard to say. So often shows cast 20 year olds to play 16 year olds, so it is quite possible that the actor who plays Alfie really is 14 and we just expect kids on TV to look older than they do in real life. I would love to have Bitsie come back. The dynamic between her and Matty is great. I'm also glad that she pointed out that Matty's revenge tour is just as much of an addiction as Ellie with drugs, their mom with alcohol and Bitsie herself with baking. I've seen it that way for a while and it's good to have someone come out and say it. I am looking forward to the conversation between Matty and Mrs. Belvin. Why was she so sure that it was either Senior, Junior or Olympia who buried the documents. If she was wrong, Olympia could be cleared. I will also note that the fact that the person went to the ladies room does make it look like Olympia is the one who did the hiding, there are, currently, no DNA detectors to make sure that "no man will enter these doors". I really look forward to the end of this season and to seeing how they set up next season.
-
I'm pretty sure we would not have seen a picture of him yet. They would hold that off until the part has been cast so no one can complain that he looks different from the picture back in season one. The characters have probably seen a picture, but the audience hasn't.

AFAIR, race has never been mentioned on Roman. Ava is played by a biracial actress who looks biracia. Roman's last name is also Sinquerra and is pronounced as if it is Hispanic. The implication is that he isn't what is considered white but his ethnicity hasn't been spelled out.
