  1. When I read no more Mount Midoriyama (however it's spelled), my cynical self said, "Parents of the teenagers must have complained that they didn't want to build Mount M in their back yard, so Jayden and Buffie wouldn't be able to compete. ' I used to like this show when new obstacles appeared weekly. Now, not so much, at all.
  2. The latest Vera Stanhope Novel, The Dark Wives, ia long, complex read that I enjoyed immensely. The Three Wives are standing stones above the town. There are the characters we love and recognize as well as a huge supporting cast. I didn't read it in a single sitting, it's too long and it was more fun to try to guess where it was going. I even got the previous ebook from the library to review something that happened then that was referenced fairly often. If you find yourself missing the TV series, this one is well enough painted to let you see it unfold in your mind's eye.
  3. The same tow truck that can cart off an 18 wheeler WITH a loaded cargo. We're not far from several interstates, and there are really big tow trucks. There are somewhat specialized flat bed trailers (a company in our county can custom make them) and they can handle twenty four ton loads and the crane lifting arm can be removed and put over the drivers compartment and secured there and to the back of the trailer.
  4. I hate that I know the answer. A friend with lots of land has several dump trucks. I asked her about them. They are her husband's projects. He and one of his buds go to sales. She showed me some of the brochures he gets that are disbursed regionally. All kinds of heavy equipment, very used, but possibly restore-able. Several hundred miles is nothing for them to drive to a good auction. (Her definition of a good auction and his definition are miles apart.)
  5. This hoard from Colorado is too gross even for cable tv. Pictures, a news article and a homicide. Be warned, it's bad, really bad.
  6. Thanks for the heads up. I want to watch Tim and his cars. In the time Hoarders has been on Mr. Ecats has thought it would be fun to have several old British cars. This is a thing that other men accumulate and then they get together and talk about what has broken recently. In our barn there is a Chevy convertible that's been there since 1995. The owner agreed to move it before 2000. There's also a ?'38 Packard in Boxes, actually a Packard and a half, be thankful there aren't two. Just as there was a series about pet hoarders, a series about men and their hoarded cars would be educational, and I'll bet that not a single one would call it hoarding. Thank God for barns and corn cribs to fill with cars.
  7. Sort of a neighborly topic, because some of us have used Google earth to drive the roads of the Shetland Islands, today I found a description of the Faero Islands. Farther out in the Atlantic, spectacular photographs, and just downright interesting, here 'tis The European Nation ruled by sheep
  8. Specifics of how it ANW happened https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-13580257/American-Ninja-Warrior-champion-Drew-Drechsel-sentenced-child-sex-crimes.html
  9. Here's a depressing read about the looming end of the Vera episodes. It talks about the signs that the series was ending, who left and who came back, and how few episodes will be in the next, final year. There is also a great picture of the star as a person in real life as well as many photos as Vera. I can understand their reasons, I continue to appreciate the series, and I am definitely going to miss the thrill of anticipation of additional episodes. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-13336515/ITVs-Vera-AXED-14-years-schedule-shake-ups-cast-quitting-did-spot-clues-iconic-series-ending.html
  10. Now a brief trip to not so jolly olde England where a "fly tipper" has hoarded out a fourteen hectare bit of land formerly called a "Beauty spot" . To the neighbors dismay, they're going to be the ones whose community will pay to clean it and in a similar action, the fly tipper got a suspended sentence. Interesting photos and some video from a drone. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13294367/Life-living-Britains-worst-fly-tipper-landowner-branded-neighbour-hell-turned-14-hectare-beauty-spot-personal-landfill-site-locals-hope-never-comes-area-blighted.html
  11. I just discovered THE short story that Miss Greenwood wrote about an older Phyrne. It's at the end of the semi-autobiographical mystery titled Taman Shud. Taman Shud was a real murder that happened in Australia and it was never solved. The book is an interesting read, but I will admit to skipping parts of it because today is dreary. The short story is worth your effort to find it, maybe through Interlibrary loan. Ir makes me miss the Phryne mysteries more and wish more had (or will) be written.
  12. And today BBC announced many cancellations. I wonder if the potential to sell this internationally helped keep it alive? Let's hope so.
  13. Vera introduced me to the statue "Angel of the North" overlooking the countryside on what I thought was a summer day. Tonight I saw it in black and white in winter and from the behind the statue overlooking it's domain.
  14. A friend is faced with the discovery that her sister is a hoarder. Maybe fortunately this discovery was made before the sister's death. The sister,. though, is 80. Have you read anything about how folks can deal with hoarders of this age and who really don't think they have a problem?
  15. Am I the only one here who no longer looks as row upon row of self storage units (that seem to multiply like un-neutered large dogs) without inserting some profane adjectives before saying "storage sheds"? I think the town closest to us now has one shed per house, and the sheds continue to multiply, faster than houses are built.
  16. We bought our place about thirty years ago and have an 18 mile drive to the city. For decades I watched a double carport that was full of stuff. No cars, just stuff, from the floor to the ceiling and solidly packed making it look as if it had been carved out of stuff. Somehow, the stuff is now gone. Not scattered over the property. Now there's a pontoon boat stored there and a car. And nothing on top of either. I wonder what caused the salvation of that carport.
  17. I was looking at satellite images of my home town. I was shocked to see a house with a hoarded up back yard. No doubt it was a hoard. The ownership has changed since my childhood, but it was a 'good' neighborhood back then. It's not that large a town, but the town is allowing the mess. We have to allow people to make their own mistakes, but when it destroys home values around them, somethings need to change. (Comparable to the squatter who moves in and takes over a house he doesn't own.)
  18. Sort of OT, but definitely Shetland crime. Shetland had a real live murder happen, and it's been solved with the alleged perp going to Lerwick. (Of course) And the victim was a newcomer. Motive ? Complexity? She moved there just months ago.
  19. A new Vera book will be published this fall
  20. Dr. Z would know! about the bathroom floor. To have a working bathroom, the plumbing would have to be replumbed so as not to leak on the nice things on the floor below. They couldn't depend on 120 year old pipes. Hot and cold water lines could be laid along the walls but Bob is way too old to be expected to step over drain pipes exposed on the floor. So, lay the drain pipes and build a floor over them. And make it look handsome.
  21. You could see the plumbing solution in the raised floor under the bathroom part of the bathroom / bedroom. They didn't want to get into the filth that could be between the floors. I know a few people who worked in a 'historic' St. Louis neighborhood, and rough and intimidating were among the adjectives applied. That the house has no parking (muck less secure parking) means the museum will fail. Cynic that I am, I will note that there aren't a lot of assorted activities near that house. Translate: nobody stole the stuff that was temporarily stored in the front yard. And I felt very sorry for Matt getting an eye infection. OTOH they may have been lucky that Hanta virus hadn't gotten to that part of the country yet. I sort of wish Matt had asked Dr. Z if she still had the pet rat she adopted several years ago.
  22. When I saw Dorothy in the tacky Tshirt, I shuddered and broke my new year's resolution not to cuss at the TV. Mr. Ecats came over and watched a bit of Day 1 and 2 and he saw the interchanges as them bullying Terri. I couldn't argue with him on that. When Terri talked about her education and what she had learned to understand herself. I listened to what she said, more than Tolin and Dorothy appeared to. I liked Terri; she wasn't irresponsible she knew to shower at the clinic where she worked. She was making do and I expect good things for her future. Let's tie Dorothy to the kayak and give her a sendoff down towards the nearest large river. I
  23. Dr. Tolin does publicity for 2024 season beginning tomorrow (Jan 8) on A&E Good introduction
  24. When will it appear over here?
  25. Fouda a most remote Shetland Island will not celebrate Christmas until January as they still follow the Julian Calendars. With only 30 inhabitants, they still cling to Norse ways.
