Since Gatecon is on the horizon (and can be streamed this year), I thought I'd share these interviews with a couple of the main guests. Thank you for indulging me.

I enjoyed these pieces very much. The piece about fanfic authors going legit was great too.

Gatecon is live streaming? I have to look into that.

I tried Atlantis. It just wasn't the same, and Universe didn't even have the same light tone! No, it was only  SG1 for me.

Same here. There wasn't the teamy goodness, which really was the secret to the show's success. I include Hammond and Fraiser in this definition.

I watched the RDA/Brad Wright celebration (sorry I forgot to post it but you can see it here) and they talked about what it would look like now. Hope Brad Wright gets the chance to do that pilot he's written.

Wow, 25 years ago. I didn't discover the show until season 7 and I found the folks at TWoP to share it with. Some of those people are on this thread. Thank you so much for making my Stargate fandom so much fun!

Then they know that she had told someone about them, there's this priest that can't speak Latin, and they don't even think to call up the church and inquire about him?

There's a throwaway line in Pay the Piper where Julia said she called the church to inquire about what had happen to the regular priest and they confirmed there was a substitute priest named Father Rockford.

  4. Was disappointed that there was no talk about AWS but I guess the bills don't address that.

The other thing that wasn't mentioned here about Amazon practices was how Amazon used to go after companies, offer to buy them at a low ball price, and if they didn't sell, make a knock-off and drive them out of business. I remember this in connection with a diaper service. Looks like they aren't even bothering with the first part anymore.

Also people liked Riker/Troi, and they got Worf/Troi for no reason cause they then literally broke up off screen and were never spoken of again. So many bizarre choices.

We got Worf/Troi because Rick Berman fell in love with the idea of it playing a "Beauty and the Beast". Can't remember where I read it but it said that the staff writers wanted to bring Imzadi home that final season but had to do this shit instead. And of course, it was so unpopular that Peter David had to write a sequel to his great Imzadi to try to make sense of this crap. Because a decision hadn't been made at that point, he had to end it with them still apart. I always thought it a shame he didn't get to write them getting together.

I'd even go as far as to say that Kate getting constantly berated or berating herself started to get uncomfortable the longer into the season they went and the clearer it got how little she values herself and that she thinks that she's not entitled to want things of her own.

Contrast that with Penelope and Daphne. I know the show doesn't want to dwell on race as a topic. But I find the difference in presentation contrasting Kate with Daphne and Pen a bit striking.

The problem is that Kate putting everyone else before herself is a core of the character. She was always going to contrast Penelope and Daphne in this way no matter who played her.

Saw it. Read it. Didn't buy the premise, marina to. Janet's death "stings more than ever" because TPTB fracked it up. Maybe someday The Companion will let me write an explanation of why Heroes is a failure, largely because of its lack of catharsis ... something that Ripple Effect tacitly acknowledged with its goodbyes in the final scene. Whenever someone like Amanda Tapping or Michael Shanks cites Heroes as their favorite episode it makes me fume. They just don't get it.

I commented about how killing off Janet ripped out the heart of the show. And it was so unnecessary because Don Davis wasn't coming back and offered to have it be his character get killed off if they needed to kill off someone the audience cared about. And yeah, so much about the catharsis was fucked, even though part two was supposed to be all about that.

I'd totally ask Lawrence if he'd let you write that piece.

The Companion has put all the Stargate regulars and recurring characters through the Briggs-Meyers personality test and the results may interest you. It's Classic Stargate (S1-8), not Stargate Lite (S9-10) so no Mitchell, Vala, Landry or RoboDoc.

  9. Episode 15.21 - Devil's Music

Now I see why we got the salon set. Musicians! Lead Belly was great to see. I saw that 12 string and thought, "did they exist then?" But that's his signature instrument, so it had to be there.

Geddy Lee was so much fun! The whole giving birth in a cabin is such a plot staple I'm not surprised they went that way. Boy are they both adorable with the baby. I agree, the baby is big! (Could that be Helene Joy's actual child? She did talk about still having to appear pregnant after having her baby.) And naming her Susanna is just perfect.

Ms Hart has always seen Miss Bright as a pest and has never trusted her but saw the business opportunity in the salon. And now she finds out the person she set up to oversee her interests is involved with the person they are supposed to be overseeing? Not surprised she acted as she did. I didn't see any change to her character. The irony, of course, is that they are both a lot alike. She's not really enjoying seeing her own former actions from the outside. This is an interesting angle to play.

It's also in character for Milo to want all the attention. I like that fact that he's open about having more than one interest (poly represent!). But he was a brat about Jack and I would like to see Watts have a discussion with him about that. If it doesn't work for Watts, cool. I just don't want to see Milo set up as being bad just because he's poly.

    Episode 15.19 - Pendrick's Planetary Parlour

Lovely to see Jonathan Young in an equally nerdy but very different role than his Tesla vampire on Sanctuary.

I've had the privilege of seeing him on stage and have met him. He's lovely. Was thrilled to see him.

Pendrick episodes are so much fun. Love how George was used. Loved all the mocking of the internet. If only all episodes could be like this. Sigh.

Have to post my agreement with this. I think it's pretty rare to see this topic covered at all, let alone treated seriously and respectfully. I also think the negative reactions to the show following its long-established format wouldn't be quite as . . . strong . . . had the planned topic been a different one. Just a hunch I have.

This. I have friends who are sex workers and I'm thrilled that this got the coverage it deserve. Quite frankly, their stories are always put on the back burner and I am so happy that they didn't do that here. You can get the Ukraine situation everywhere.

Just wish that being in Canada I didn't have to wait weeks to watch it.

  12. 15.19 Brother Can You Spare a Crime

Called it early that it would be someone in the family. Was trying to remember if it was just the father wanting to demonize the camp dwellers and the son saying nothing or if he joined in. If the former, than it's just tragic. If it's the latter, the son is a jerk.

Loved how Julia found a way for Margaret to redirect her energies. It was great that she had something to contribute. Also chiming in that it's great that they are using her more as a character in her own right this season. In fact, this season all the women are being used well, which is nice.

Poor Watts. Dumped twice in one season. As was said, let him be happy.

I'm also thrilled with next week's special guest. He's my favourite reoccurring character.

  13. Just watched 15.17 & 15.18.

My big takeaway watching these two back to back is how they can still give us fresh stories by delving into the worlds of the various subgroups of early 20th century Toronto.  No needing to put our regular cast in peril required.

Was nice to see the perspective of the Niagara Conference (although they did fudge things a bit - only the first conference was in Canada and the site was chosen not because they couldn't book stateside but because they wanted recreational facilities) and the founding of the NAACP. And I knew nothing of the Russo-Japanese War so appreciated getting into the intricacies of that.

And oh my - I loved Meyers and Watts. Great comedy duo there. More of the two of them befuddling each other, please!

I recognize that the show has been running for a LONG time, but I really miss the early days without all this family drama.  I liked it when each episode was a self-contained mystery, with some "modern" invention or twist.  There is just too much to keep track of, to the point where it is just not fun.

Nice to know I'm not the only one!

You bet, marina to! Now I am crushed to learn that Amanda and Teryl will be appearing in Chicago while I'm up in Michigan seeing my wife's new grandson. Life is so unfair!

Oh no! That really does suck. Wish there was something I could do.
