  1. Episode 15.21 - Devil's Music

Now I see why we got the salon set. Musicians! Lead Belly was great to see. I saw that 12 string and thought, "did they exist then?" But that's his signature instrument, so it had to be there.

Geddy Lee was so much fun! The whole giving birth in a cabin is such a plot staple I'm not surprised they went that way. Boy are they both adorable with the baby. I agree, the baby is big! (Could that be Helene Joy's actual child? She did talk about still having to appear pregnant after having her baby.) And naming her Susanna is just perfect.

Ms Hart has always seen Miss Bright as a pest and has never trusted her but saw the business opportunity in the salon. And now she finds out the person she set up to oversee her interests is involved with the person they are supposed to be overseeing? Not surprised she acted as she did. I didn't see any change to her character. The irony, of course, is that they are both a lot alike. She's not really enjoying seeing her own former actions from the outside. This is an interesting angle to play.

It's also in character for Milo to want all the attention. I like that fact that he's open about having more than one interest (poly represent!). But he was a brat about Jack and I would like to see Watts have a discussion with him about that. If it doesn't work for Watts, cool. I just don't want to see Milo set up as being bad just because he's poly.

    Episode 15.19 - Pendrick's Planetary Parlour

Lovely to see Jonathan Young in an equally nerdy but very different role than his Tesla vampire on Sanctuary.

I've had the privilege of seeing him on stage and have met him. He's lovely. Was thrilled to see him.

Pendrick episodes are so much fun. Love how George was used. Loved all the mocking of the internet. If only all episodes could be like this. Sigh.

Have to post my agreement with this. I think it's pretty rare to see this topic covered at all, let alone treated seriously and respectfully. I also think the negative reactions to the show following its long-established format wouldn't be quite as . . . strong . . . had the planned topic been a different one. Just a hunch I have.

This. I have friends who are sex workers and I'm thrilled that this got the coverage it deserve. Quite frankly, their stories are always put on the back burner and I am so happy that they didn't do that here. You can get the Ukraine situation everywhere.

Just wish that being in Canada I didn't have to wait weeks to watch it.

  4. 15.19 Brother Can You Spare a Crime

Called it early that it would be someone in the family. Was trying to remember if it was just the father wanting to demonize the camp dwellers and the son saying nothing or if he joined in. If the former, than it's just tragic. If it's the latter, the son is a jerk.

Loved how Julia found a way for Margaret to redirect her energies. It was great that she had something to contribute. Also chiming in that it's great that they are using her more as a character in her own right this season. In fact, this season all the women are being used well, which is nice.

Poor Watts. Dumped twice in one season. As was said, let him be happy.

I'm also thrilled with next week's special guest. He's my favourite reoccurring character.

  5. Just watched 15.17 & 15.18.

My big takeaway watching these two back to back is how they can still give us fresh stories by delving into the worlds of the various subgroups of early 20th century Toronto.  No needing to put our regular cast in peril required.

Was nice to see the perspective of the Niagara Conference (although they did fudge things a bit - only the first conference was in Canada and the site was chosen not because they couldn't book stateside but because they wanted recreational facilities) and the founding of the NAACP. And I knew nothing of the Russo-Japanese War so appreciated getting into the intricacies of that.

And oh my - I loved Meyers and Watts. Great comedy duo there. More of the two of them befuddling each other, please!

I recognize that the show has been running for a LONG time, but I really miss the early days without all this family drama.  I liked it when each episode was a self-contained mystery, with some "modern" invention or twist.  There is just too much to keep track of, to the point where it is just not fun.

Nice to know I'm not the only one!

You bet, marina to! Now I am crushed to learn that Amanda and Teryl will be appearing in Chicago while I'm up in Michigan seeing my wife's new grandson. Life is so unfair!

Oh no! That really does suck. Wish there was something I could do.

  8. Looks like I'm wrong, Maureen Jennings writes one episode every season. Didn't realize she's part of the writer's room

We talked a little bit about this last year, and how the storylines come about. You had told me then that you usually pitch three or four episode ideas and then they select one.

And look what she says in the article:

    Quote

Did the pandemic affect how you wrote this episode or is writing a Murdoch Mysteries episode more of a solitary affair for you anyway?
MJ: Pre-COVID-19, we had a fun second story about basketball and we were hoping to lure one of our fabulous Raptors to come and do a cameo. It had to be dropped. FOR NOW.

Maureen Jennings has written 217 episodes in MM's first 14 seasons so not necessarily the finale. But you're right in that it is, imdb says that there are only16 episodes this season. (Curse you, pandemic!)

I looked at that IMDB listing and beside every entry it says either creator or characters, which mean she gets a credit on every episode and the only good place IMDB can put it is in the writer section. I don't believe she's actually written for the show yet. So if she is, it's kind of a big deal so it would have to be a big episode.

The only thing good about last week's episode was that it was finally the end of Ralph Fellows!

I wish I was convinced of that. What was with that weird convo in the closest near the end of the show? I think it's a setup to bring him back. Sigh.

    Episode 15.14 - Rawhide Ralph

Also for the first time, wasn't crazy about Milo Strange - I realize he is very comfortable in his skin (and I think that is great) but he wasn't at all sympathetic to Watts' position/situation and a couple of his remarks seemed rather hurtful (DO NOT hurt Watts!).

Yeah, I was really turned off by Milo there too. Not everyone can just come out of the closest there, Milo. Watts is an officer of the law and he's skating so much to begin with. His profession doesn't give him the freedom yours does. And if that's some silly jealousy game you're playing, it doesn't reflect well on you.

    Ep. 15.14 - Rawhide Ralph

Ugh, Ralph Fellows. No thank you. Julia was awesome as always.

So Watts was still sleeping with Jack? Why do you do this to yourself, Watts? And damn, Jack is looking really suspicious in this. I just hope it's all over so Watts can go be happy with Milo Strange, however their relationship happens to be.

Higgins was quite sassy this week.

I feel like Mrs. Hart is going to kill her husband.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on this episode. Putting the cast in peril is so tiresome, and this whole episode was. Although, since we had that scene of Fellows talking to that dummy, I suspect they are going to bring him back, even though none of his actions at the end make any sense. It was really awful.

The only thing that can salvage this is if Jack's wife's family is setting him up. But what's the likelihood of that? Instead, lots of Watts angst underway.

Ugh. I hate angst. Just solve the mystery of the week with fun and panache. That's all I want, TPTB.

I do have one thought coming out of it though. How did William and Julia have so much money on them? Or for that matter, to build that house? I can't imagine William makes much on the police force and Julia would have been massively underpaid as a surgeon, not to mention all the medical fees she's racked up along the way.

Oh are you in for a treat! I really don't want to say anything so that you can have the pleasure of discovering it. But it's iconic and really defines Anthony & Kate.

  14. Speaking of RDA, he did an recorded interview with Brad Wright for the Companion. They spend the first half talking about kids and dogs, but then RDA answered a few fan questions and things got interesting. He enjoyed it so much that he's doing another session, this time live, on February 12th. It's worth getting the subscription for it. They also announced that they've done some tweaks to the AI and it's going to write more scripts. That will be recorded later this year.

Boy are you on the money (pardon the pun). Talk about 'playing out the string'! Not only are the scripts—including the infamous P.U.—lacking but the budget looks severely depleted. S8 basically vamps for time until Moebius looms over the horizon. The good writing was happening on Atlantis and probably the only reason S8 got made was that RDA didn't want to leave all the cast and crew in the lurch by retiring. Only when S9 was a firm possibility did SciFi back down from its long held position of 'no Jack, no show.'

S8 did give us a couple of good things. Daniel in a suit and lots of quality Teal'c time with Sam and Daniel. That disappeared in S9 & 10.

Yeah, I'm worried that hunting will replace Pall Mall because of that group photo. You can't show how batshit the Bridgertons are during a hunt. You just can't.

Never fear. Julia Quinn said ages ago that when she sold the series, her one stipulation was that the Pall Mall scene had to be there, otherwise her fans would riot. They're just keeping all of it under wraps. They are not going to leave out the most popular scene in the entire series. Makes more sense that they are saying nothing about it.

  16. Season 15, Episode 6 - I Know What You Did Last Autumn

A definite improvement over last year's Halloween episode. This one was a lot of fun. I laughed at Crabtree discovering pumpkin spice coffee. I didn't guess the murderer but boy did it make a ton of sense. I too wanted to see William's outfit!

However, we get it, Jordan is a baby genius. Did we really have to give her the pumpkin prize?

Season 15, Episode 7 - The Incorrigible Dr. Ogden

After the episode, my roommate did some research and it turned out that I grew up not far from there. And since it didn't shut down until 1969, it was there during my lifetime. So happy I wasn't living during that time. And seeing what could brand you incorrigible helps me understand my mom a little more.  I always wondered why she was so worried about other's opinions but if this was the fate in store for you if you were branded a bad girl, I get it. What the victim did seems reprehensible but as I thought on it, she too was just trying to survive. She needed money so she wouldn't be forcibly sterilized. How moral would I be under those circumstances?

Milo was fun and I do hope we get more of him. Just not too much. Agree with everyone it was good to see Watts smile. Also appreciated the follow up with the situation with Bobby.
