  1. I'm happy she isn't the stereotypic "southern belle" languishing at home during troubled times. She's one of the stronger female characters in recent period soaps.
  2. We're 3 episodes in and he's giving off that Scarlett O'Hara vibe that he'll never be hungry again and will restore the Hotel to its former glory by doing whatever he can to obtain and make money.
  3. I liked the premise of the episode: Lizardman minding his own business on the night of the full moon, gets bitten by a human and becomes a human. I hope his hibernation cures him of this curse. Guy Mann's observations on humans had that "fresh look with new eyes" appeal which the Solomons on 3rd Rock from the Sun had. Loved it!
  4. It's a good thing I didn't read the popcorn box at the movies posts then skip pages to this one 'cuz I would really be wonderin' if this was the Judge Judy forum or something else..........
  5. Over the years, PBS has shown stuff like lions taking down a gazelle and eating it, childbirth, etc. Anyhow, the M*A*S*H/China Beach/Call The Midwife plots don't interest me that much. I find Belinda and Mr. Green adapting to a new social infrastructure more interesting.
  6. There was no formal training, but her training was limited to taking care of her dying husband. As opposed to Miss Hastings whose training was in Crimea taking care of the wounded soldiers. The US didn't become royal/aristocratic title obsessed until about the 1870s when the "Dollar Princesses" started the trans-Atlantic "dollars for titles" trade. The last "European" war the US was involved with was the War of 1812, which was 46 years prior to the American Civil War. Some of the older members of the US population (North and South) were either veterans of that war or children during that time.
  7. Frank Burns and Margaret Hoolihan were the "evil" couple on MASH, but they were funny. Hale and Hastings are the "evil" couple (even have some Frank and Margaret exchanges like the "why does the Army treat us like crap?" scene), but they seem more pathetic. And Phoney Dentist? I wonder if the actor was ever in a production of Little Shop of Horrors because he got that crazed dentist look on his face every time he touched or looked at the dental instruments. Foster is giving himself high enough doses of morphine that he's having visual disturbances---mebbe Frank Burns is right about him not being a good doctor. BTW, he was wrong about where his brother would be sent. His bro would most likely end up at Point Look Out in Maryland and would probably be dead within a year due to the conditions there.
  8. I think that nephews and husband comment is a dig that Mary isn't qualified to be a nurse, much less the director of nursing (or whatever her title is) at that hospital.
  9. When Emma went on about disloyalty, I thought "Cool! They read about Olivia Floyd and will base Emma on her." Nope. Nothing wrong with nurses or doctors (I work with them), but a lady spy would be different. Another point of accented contention....Dr. Foster is a Marylander: he should have a Southern accent too.
  10. I think some memories are too painful to be recounted. And I think some memories are recounted but no one listens and/or bothers to pass it down.
  11. According to that book, he developed an "organic" illness (probably cancer), had surgery, then died a few weeks later.
  12. I think they gave Mary a hard time because they think she's a rich widow who wants an adventure, not someone serious about doing work.
  13. So Miss Hastings was born and raised in East London and has a posh accent? Anyhow, Frank Burns complained to Henry Blake about Hawkeye. And Frank and Margaret plot against Hawkeye. Oooops! Dr. Hale filed a complaint against Dr. Foster. And Dr. Hale and Miss Hastings plot against Dr. Foster. Meanwhile, House is secretly shooting himself with morphine, which would make him sleepy and dull his mentation. Ooops! Dr. Foster is an impaired physician. Jo is working at the hospital while Amy is more concerned about her hair ribbons. Oooops! Emma is working at the hospital while Alice is staying at home. James Jr is probably the WORST businessman in the world (next to Robert Crawley). Fugitive slave trackers kidnap part of your workforce and it's "not our battle"? Really? He does realize that elves only help shoemakers.....
  14. Mary is a widow. She would be addressed as Mrs. Baumkuchen whether she was working as a laundress or as nurse. Besides, this is America, not England.
  15. okay, so what happened in the first new case yesterday? My JJ was interrupted for a "special news report" that the public transpo system for the entire region will shut down the whole weekend due to this blizzard. Whoever is running Fox5DC probably reads these forums because, miraculously, after the 12 minute press conference and 3 minutes of the newscasters repeating the important stuff, they continued with JJ.
  16. You seem to be on the right track, tee. But I'm still worried for you because you didn't mention borrowing her money to bail her out of jail. ;-) FYI, we're expecting a snowstorm in my locale. According to the news, the American, Canadian and European weather forecasting computer models all say that we're in for 1 to 2 feet. Snow will begin snowing friday during the day (messing up evening rush hour of course), continue through the night, all of saturday and end sometime in the wee morning hours of sunday. Which means: they will probably pre-empt JJ so the local station can show taped segments of snow falling, snow accumulating on sidewalks, cars driving through snow, people walking through snow, dogs running through snow, children playing in snow, people shovelling snow, interviewing random people about their thoughts on snow, etc. Pretty please, include lots of detail about the two cases (ex-felon and bad check writer.)
  17. I sort of wish his siblings WERE there!
  18. When HLGJr told Keenan his ancestor was "kidnapped" by Abolitionists, Keenan's face was "oh no, don't tell me what I think you're going to tell me." BTW, his mother was/is beautiful!
  19. Even if Mary were an American citizen and cannot legally hold a title, they probably would have still addressed her as Baroness out of courtesy, not legality. At the very least, they would have called her Mrs. Liverwurst, rather than Miss Phinney. I'm beginning to think in the Film Writers University, they're teaching students that widowed women or women who are thought to be widowed were properly addressed as Miss Maiden Name, because it's happened in this show and in Indian Summers . It's appalling by today's standards because we have so much more now. Surgical gloves were invented by Halsted because his girlfriend (later wife) was his nurse and her hands were sensitive to the disinfectants being used at the time. Penicillin wasn't discovered yet. Even though ether and chloroform were used as anesthesia, and was used when it was available. The one thing that was "invented" during the American Civil War and reduced deaths was the "field hospital" or MASH unit. In Europe, the hospitals were a great distance away from the battlefield (usually in the nearest city or large town). That delayed medical care for the severely and moderately wounded. During the American Civil War, field hospitals were in the "field": medical treatment was given and the survivors were brought to the hospitals in towns and cities, like Alexandria or DC., really to recuperate and convalesce. And the ill who contracted diseases like pneumonia, like Mr. March in Little Women, were also in hospitals in towns. It's kind of surprising that there aren't more family members in the Mercy Hospital caring for their wounded or ill soldiers i, because they did that. If this show lasts another few seasons, I hope and then don't hope they have Mary Edwards Walker do a cameo. http://americancivilwar.com/women/mary_edwards_walker.html
  20. I hate to say this but in the Richard Dawson era Family Feud, the families "posing" in their "photo" look more Civil War period than that tintype crap on the PBS site. It's a shame this show didn't put any real effort into the little details. Anyhow, Mr. Greene is smart selling coffins to the Union. He not only has to make money to support his family, but he also has to make money to pay his Federal property tax which was levied on all properties in the occupied areas. Otherwise, the Feds will seize his hotel and home for nonpayment (that's how the Feds "legally" seized Arlington House from Mrs. Robert E. Lee or as this program would have called her Miss Mary Custis.)
  21. If you listen to the revisionism going on here in Maryland, the majority of Marylanders were Unionists----including the slave owners. you better avoid looking at the "character tintype" feature on the PBS site. There's a really horrible anachronistic "prom photo" of Emma and her beau.
  22. IIRC, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, Meg goes to a ball and her friends dress her up: crimping her hair, powdering her face and applying rouge (or an attempt at rouging her was made). But the make up was minimal compared to today.
  23. It looks like they're showing "new" episodes of What's My Line. I never saw the Tyrone Power one which aired last week. Sadly, 3 years after that show Tyrone Power died
  24. B-b-b-but that's 'cause just because he doesn't pay his bills doesn't mean he's not a good father.
  25. They filmed the series in Petersburg, VA. So you won't see any Alexandria locations. I'm from Maryland (across the river from Arlington and Alexandria). I hear the indigenous Maryland southern accent all the time. It's similar to the indigenous Northern Virginia southern accent. Both are different than other Southern accents. Apparently whoever is advising them doesn't know that because they try to sound like Scarlett O'Hara. So that's annoying to me. Also, Samuel Diggs has a southern accent, even though he grew up in Philadelphia????? Additionally, they keep addressing a widow as "Miss". I fear the writers took the same "History of Etiquette 101" course as the Indian Summers writers. This was an era where married women (widowed too) were addressed as Mrs. John Smith or Mrs. Smith, not Mrs. Adelaide Smith, and definitely not Miss Jones. Agree with those upthread about it being modern. Dr. Foster would not have rattled off who invented the hypodermic needle. Nor would Nurse Mary say "men of color" ---- doesn't matter if she was super-Abolitionist.
