  1. I think those cast members are showing the appropriate restraint in such a situation, after the initial shock of the news. Let the facts unfold, and then try if you wish to verbalise your feelings. Not that any of them are under any obligation to make public statements about it, but that is the culture of the day where people are expected to display their inner thoughts on all subjects. I wish I could share AR'S optimism, assuming she means "found alive". I am sure some will not find closure and use it as a reason to amp up their craziness. They are a minority but a very vocal one.
  2. The details you provide underscore how so many people are overinvolved in some celebrities' lives, to the point of losing whatever little rationality they had to begin with, as with their suggestion of a night search in a murky lake full of debris; it's as if they want to put the search people in jeopardy. As for their paranoid scenarios, the less said the better. Social media can really be a nuisance and even a hindrance for the authorities in an emergency situation. At least HM showed herself to be a little more careful in her later tweet than in her initial message.
  3. Unfortunately, well-meaning volunteers just showing up can be more a hindrance than a help. If the authorities can coordinate them for support duties, for example food and supplies as you suggest, or for a straight line of people just walking through a wooded area, perhaps it might work. There is an example of this unfolding up here at this moment, with a case of parental abduction turned tragic; the two little girls have been found dead but the father is still at large. There was a rumour yesterday that he had been spotted in one section of the area so a hundred people just showed up, only to have the police tell them to go home because they were mucking up all traces of him as well as confusing the search dogs who were overwhelmed by the number of different scents. In NR's case, it's even more complicated because the search mostly takes place underwater, which requires special training; unless they start to scour the shores for her, but I do not know how difficult the terrain is. You do not want to endanger the lives of anyone engaged in the search by sending them to dangerous locations, be they spontaneous volunteers or trained personnel.
  4. I hated her at first sight. There was something about her attitude, her dismissive smirk and the dynamics with her witness (both silently cackling with each other as the facts were exposed); or perhaps it was her ugly dress. She also pulled the frequent stunt of bringing up something about the other party that had nothing to do with the case and was only designed to smear his character. My only regret is that the plaintiff did not decide earlier to use his gun against the rogue dogs and that he got only one animal. She was as vile, in her own particular way, as the house owner from the day before who claimed that the hurricane had miraculously spared her house while she was up north, only to leave it vulnerable to being ravaged by her housesitter. Both are viciously deluded hags.
  5. I saw a short report about it on the Web site of Canada's biggest French-language newspaper, so the news is making the rounds. Probably not as quickly or extensively as if she were one of the most active of the former Gleeks, whether in acting, performing or publishing. I think that the circumstances of this now generally assumed drowning makes it particularly striking and a likelier candidate for geting into the news, i.e. the son being left alone on the boat and being found sleeping hours later. Which means the police's only source of information is a young child; they must be careful not to contaminate his testimony because at that age we are very influenceable and it is easy to plant false memories in a child's mind. It's bad enough he will have to live with the real memory of the events, and that it may well grow worse as he gets older and better understands the full meaning of it.
  6. This surprised me, pleasantly. We did not get the usual "depreciated vlue" doctrine from JJ, even though the plaintiff's claim went along those lines. As you say, the defendant was so off-putting with her blatant lies and made-up story that JJ went overboard in compensating the bouncy house's owner. Sometimes, JJ's inconsistency produces good results. He is an example of why our company has stopped hiring motivational speakers for employee seminars after 2 attempts. They were full of themselves just because they provide generic bromides that would be cheaper to buy in a bag of fortune cookies. And these were the highly rated and recommended ones, which means that there is a market their shtick. In the case of this guy, I feel that even us polite Canadians would have run him out of the hall on a rail, after a delicate but thorough tarring and feathering.
  7. Yes, in the case of a non-celebrity like most of us, it would usually be reported in general terms with no names, at least initially. But in the case of a celebrity, as soon as the information is confirmed the temptation may be overwhelming for some media to specify who it relates to in order to generate more views or clicks, whether the family has been formally notified or not.
  8. Celebrity news sites and paparazzi are very clever at finding things out; for example, they pay informants and still make use of traditional tools like the police scanner you mention. Sad to say but there is little privacy left for some people as soon as they step out the door, even in case of a tragedy like this. It is just about impossible for a celebrity and their entourage to control what information will get published or not, or when it will be. The competition is so fierce among gossip media outlets that they will rush to print or post any news.
  9. I felt sorry for the defendant, who obviously suffers from a genetic condition that makes her hair take on such fugly variegated colourings. On the other hand, the plaintiff's style of beard I usually find silly looking, but he wore it rather well. If ever a defendant generated in me a desire to slap them around, it would be her (although it would of course be wrong, and perhaps a tad unhealthy, to touch her). Her father obviously taught her well how to show absolutely no consideration for other people's property; he was even worse than her in his callousness about the situation. It also looks like a third generation is carrying on that proud heritage.
  10. My take is that JJ just got tired of hearing counter-arguments (valid ones at that) from the plaintiff when she would not admit to having misunderstood the facts and chronology, so she decided in a huff to put an end to things, reminding everyone who's boss and giving her another opportuinity to indulge in one of ther favourite pastimes, screwing over a small businessman.
  11. As I said, I would agree with such an analysis. The rub is that spokespeople for the "defund" movement, including those we saw on TDS, do not make such a nuance and talk as if all police work, including criminal investigations and bringing people to justice, can be performed by other services, including social workers. Such a hoplessly naive approach may be a distorsion of the true intent, but it comes from the public faces of the idea. I suppose it is an inevitable by-product of a decentralised movement without an identifiable leadership. I really enjoyed the Bubba Wallace interview. The fact that a cord that had been hanging from the door for several yearss was suddenly noticed and took on such an ominous meaning underscores how current events are heightening sensitivity to even the smallest detail one would not have even noticed before.
  12. I do not think I missed any point either. Police work and social work are two different fields; often complementary, sometimes antagonistic, but separate. Those who propose defunding the former to bump up the former's finances are simply suggesting to shift the overall problems from one envelope to another one.
  13. You are not alone: and I am sure JJ felt the same, figuratively at least. I had totally forgotten the plaintiff, except for his shiny silver suit and his habit of looking bewildered and lost at every statement made by the defendant. I have the same hope, but I do not really recall the outcome. Which may mean that I was disappointed or that a benevolent veil of amnesia descended over all that awful story of family interactions. MiL is a real buttinsky and most probably aggravated the basic situation.
  14. A little music video from DC's current comedy series Royalties, featuring two former Gleeks (Sam and Artie certainly have... matured).
  15. Neither did I, but as I posted earlier my needs are different since I do not drink coffee. I still think that burr grinders must be difficult to clean when you use a spice mix involving pods, peppercorns of any kind, seeds and leaves (with the occasional twigs). It's funny that the blade models, which as far as I know were designed originally for coffee, are now thought by many as "spice" grinders.
  16. But he worked very hard afterwards to find convincing reasons to buy the more sophisticated machines. Myself I hate coffee, so I use my grinder only for spices. I used to be very happy with the Krups model that ATK recommended, but then the company came up with a newer model, the Vortex, which is a bit more powerful, less noisy and has a removeable grinding bowl (very convenient for washing up). I still use the older one for simple grinds, like various peppers or cumin, but for harder spices like cardamom or complex mixes, the newer one does a better job. And I certainly would not want a burr one for spices; the clean-up must be horrible. The new episode we got today was the "turkey for a crowd" one, which reinforced my resolution never to invite so many people for dinner at the same time. Although they had interesting approaches that could certainly be scaled down for a single bird or even half of one. I got an edge grain teak board by that company years ago because they were on sale at Best Buy and I was tempted to try one, I have not looked back since. Best board I own.
  17. I think that the lying was what really ticked off JJ because it was a very serious accusation of him illegally misrepresenting himself, plus the fact that the defendant tried to make a strange legal parallel between practices in her own profession and the building trade. She argued that only the licensed contractor should have been allowed to do every portion of the work; either she does not know how things work in construction with very specialised sub-fields, or she was simply lying. I lean towards the latter. I fully agree with @CrazyInAlabama's description of her as "another nasty old lady who thinks if she complains enough, that she should get work done cheaper". And if complaining does not do the trick, then lying is her next go-to option
  18. Then we agree despite your previous comment which said the following: That wording implied a burden of responsibility on RM with regards to the present situation as a whole, which meant he should not express satisfaction with what he has made because the industry overall has not passed a certain milestone. It is standard for people to be positive about their work and realisations, and to gloss over the shortcomings (and this series has a few as I and others have mentioned in other postings), especially if they are marketing a newly released project to attract viewers or buyers. The job of tearing a work apart and dissecting its achievements to expose the failings is our domain on these boards. 😉 Which is exactly what they did here, although the point of divergence was rather small and focused, posited on the existence a few forward-looking individuals well in advance on their times. Anyone familiar with the genre and practice af alternate fiction can attest that it covers a wider spectrum, from historical differences that range from history-upheaving and earth-shatterring, to some on a much smaller scale. Deciding if the divergence was enough to be intellectually satisfying and if the final product is of sufficient quality is of course a matter of personal preference and appreciation, in which there will also be wide variations because of personal affinities. For example, I like some alternate histories but I grew tired a long time ago of the Harry Turtledove type, which I find formulaic and repetitive. Stanley Kramer? He of the ponderous Significant Movies, with a few lumbering divertissements like Mad, Mad World thrown in? That is a harsh and cruel comparison. I find RM's output to be on the whole more enjoyable and satysfying as a viewing experience, with some exceptions, than plodding stuffed turkeys like Judgement at Nuremberg, On the Beach or The Defiant Ones. One notable difference between the two may be that RM often aims to deliver a Message, while SK wanted to send MESSAGES!!!
  19. JJ said she usually is sympathetic to brides-to-be in dress cases. My attitude is totally opposite and this case is one of many that have only confirmed my bias.
  20. Yes, there are isolated examples, but it will be a slow process. That being said, Ryan Murphy does not have to answer to the fact that there are so few out lead actors; he is not responsible for what every other casting agent, production company or studio does in Hollywood. So he can indeed be happy and satisfied with what he does, and be all gushing and praiseworthy to his writers, cast and crew for their achievement, even with the work's shortcomings. He's only accountable for his work and the portion of his field that he can have an effect on or can change on his own, not for what all others do and how slow the industry as whole changes in spite of small individual pushes in the right direction.
  21. Well, that's the old gal's only remaining pleasure in life, to mock and demean litigants, even those who do not deserve it.
  22. I was not taking aim at social service in principle, but at their proposal to replace police work with people who are not trained for that kind of work as a magical solution to instantly correct all problems of crime. Social work is not designed to fight crime, pursue long and complex investigations or to catch criminals. But listening to those people, they sounded like Dr Phil to the power of Dr Oz in their naive and simplistic view of how things function and can change. Nothing is as simple as they made it to be, either police work or social work. And there's room for improvement in both fields.
  23. Her wording made it seem like an innocent baseball bat was casually strolling by the scene of the altercation and was then forced to get involved. She mentioned her daughter was in the car during the road rage incident. She'll be an entitled old hag, endlessly stroking her carefully ironed out hair.
  24. A new episode today according to the screen blurb. The plaintiff suing her two aunts for damage to her car while she was in jail had the biggest case of Crrrrrazy Eyes I have seen in quite a while. It certainly confirms the aside by one of the defendants that "this girl is crazy". She kept nodding in acquiescence to what the judges were saying but I think all that bobbing made what little brain she has slosh around too much and she had no real grasp of what she heard, constantly repeating her silly claims and story. She even managed to infuriate Uncle Mike! I do not know how much of it is real and how much of it is her stragey for survival. She certainly came across as spoiled, entitled, self-absorbed and ready to live off other people's money and kindness. Judge Acker quite rightly said after her post-verdict little outbust "now we see the road rage".
  25. In Canada, many provinces (perhaps all) require people to sign their Lotto tickets when they purchase them, exactly to avoid a swap like that after the draw. I do not think it can apply to scratch games though, of which there is always an appallingly vast and diverse offering on display behind the cashier in various businesses.
