The reason I find her so dislikable is that she has lied to garner sympathy from her family... then is befuddled that they don't like the guy she has painted as a cheater (and who also "stole her virginity." I think her family is close-knit and adhere to strict Mormon principles- her dad at least- and they are protective and of course will take her side if she tells them he was unfaithful. I don't blame the sister for being upset and confused, literally hours before the Bad Guy is supposed to land in America - and she's kicked her sister and nephew out over the LIE that Sister told her about him. Kailani's family are Mormons (I believe now one must say "members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints), who have an entirely different viewpoint than most Christians. There are so many different types of people who call themselves Christians, not all of whom view premarital sex as forbidden. I think Kailani's father sees the entire relationship through his religion's lens, which strongly urges abstinence and that married couples are married through eternity. Poor Asuelu doesn't have a chance. On another, very superficial level, Kailani? Says everything? with a question mark at the end? And how many times has she said, "my family is complete." She banged the guy on vacation because Dad wasn't there to stop her and she got pregnant. Your family? isn't going to be perfect? like you want?

Jonathon wasn't thinking of going overseas to fight terrorists, Eric was.

I don't consider her not changing gyms equivalent to refusing to split household chores or to get to know Dave's friends. The "experts" suggested that because Dave couldn't handle that she dated someone at the gym that he knows. For her to do that would paint her as a wrongdoer, and make her look like she had reason to feel ashamed.
-
I'm not sure why she should be obligated to change gyms because, as an adult, she dated someone from their mutual gym. To me, that's an unspoken admission she has something to be ashamed about. I think it would make her look worse. People pick gyms for location, amenities, etc. Why should she go somewhere else because Dave knows a guy there she dated/slept with/whatever?
-
To the credit of the "experts," they really are given a snapshot of each contestant, who is of course on his/her best behavior. If I knew Dr. Pepper was coming to rummage through my underwear drawer or snoop in my refrigerator, I might toss the holy ones or dump out the food that's sat there a little too long. So they match Dave and Amber, both who say they are adventurous, go to the gym a lot, want families, and are independent and successful in their careers. I am sure that Amber didn't reveal to them that she can be massively insecure, and spends thousands to make herself look like she is never (hopefully) going to age... and Dave didn't say, "yeah, I'm anal, I hate cats and I shut down when a woman tries to discuss a relationship." Similarly, they matched Tristan and Mia because, at interview time, they both seemed family-oriented, and their faith was very important to them. Then oopsie, Mia turned out to have a shady criminal past, and despite his wide smile, Tristan became the guy who was very inept at dealing with conflict and stress. I get annoyed when these couples say, "oh, we've been through more than most couples have in a lifetime. We've had so many ups and downs! We can weather anything!!" Give it some time, guys. Wait till one of you gets the flu, gives it to the other, your power goes out for a week, you have a kid who won't sleep through the night, a parent dies, there's a family rift, your car breaks down, etc. That's when you start seeing the strength of your marriage, not how you deal with learning that your shiny new spouse is a slob or that her pet poops on the floor.
-
Well, I doubt someone would specify that they wanted good character or intelligence, right? I imagine certain traits are generally assumed (not a murderer, wants to get married, decent human being.)If they got *that* deep into it in the interview process, they'd never get through the thousands of applicants. So they probably ask, "what type of man/woman is attractive to you?" (fair, tall, athletic, etc) and they do get into some value questions such as, is family important, do you want children, etc. To be fair, another quality that Tristan did say was important was faith (which a lot of people here threw back at him, as in "he's so sure God picked Mia that he'll stay with a criminal." Just because the looks comment was the one that was aired doesn't mean that Tristan is a shallow dolt who only looks at skin color and how the woman fills out a dress. I'm not saying I like him, though, or how he handled the entire marriage.
-
Interesting, because many people here thought that Mia's moving out was the ultimate in manipulation, and that if someone wants to know whether the other person is invested, if they are really interested in making the relationship work, they discuss it directly rather than make that drastic move and say, as Mia said, "I wanted you to tell me to come back." I think that's juvenile - Amber or Mia could have said, "look, I sense you aren't interested in working on this relationship and you need to let me know because otherwise, I'll pack my stuff now and get out." You don't make a move like that to try and finagle a particular response.

Jay didn't "tell a story of being raped as a child," he just said he lost his virginity as a child. We don't have any details at all about what he means.

S07.E16: All the Roads Lead to This
KateHearts replied to humbleopinion's topic in Married At First Sight
Eh, there are a lot of people who are "animal people" who don't relate to humans at all. Just because she's all into her foster pets doesn't necessarily translate into her being a good partner with another person. -
I think Paul's "don't point fingers in prison" comment was based on his own experiences as a convicted arsonist. Overall, this "tell-all" was a disappointment. So many questions that Silly, bug-eyed Shawn COULD have asked and didn't. RICKY: "Isn't it true that you never really split from your wife but that you were looking for publicity for your photography business?" RICKY is a slimeball, lying liar. For him to sit there looking puzzled as Jimena told him exactly what she should (Thanks, Asshole, for showing your true colors so that I dodged that bullet, you pig!) and to put on his earnest face about listening to his ex, "trying to work it out," and, the worst, going to get relationship and life advice from his ADOLESCENT DAUGHTER (who I love and admire!) is absolutely disgusting. PAUL: "what is your problem that you keep smacking your wife down at every turn? Are you autistic?" PAUL does not know how to relate to other humans except perhaps his Mommy. Talk about a turnabout though: "we're family and we work things out. We're having a baby! It's so exciting! But of course, we will need a paternity test. Karine! Karine! I LOVE YOU!!!!!" (and I love how he needs subtitles!) TARIK: "why do you wear Buffalo plaid at every opportunity? Did you buy Hazel her green plaid dress? How do you think she will do as a stepmom to your special needs child?" TARIK seems a little more grounded now; I still am a little skeeved by his admission that he picked Hazel out of a lineup of potential Asian mates and said "I gotta have her!" And Shawn, really- "I don't like to ask about people's sex lives... buttttt....." ANGELA: " Do you know the difference between 'elder' and 'elderly'? Where do you buy your clothes? How many packs a day do you smoke? And do you need to be reminded that this is NOT Jerry Springer?" ANGELA is grasping at straws at this point; she wants to go out with a bang and doesn't hold back to try and shock others. The entire confrontation with Rachael was a joke. Rachael is trashy? Look in the mirror, Babe. Clip in that straw-like extension before you head to County Jail to visit your dear daughter. RACHAEL: "Why don't you show your older daughter on TV? Does her father have the presence of mind to say, there is NFW she's going to be tarnished for life? And how tall is Jon? What's with the Short Man Complex, that he has to defend his manhood all the time?" RACHAEL needs to stop.picking.at.her.eyeballs. Those "goodbye scenes" were so ridiculous. And yet again, she broke out the winner of the Ugly Sweater Contest and her one pair of (bootleg) jeans for the special occasion of being on national TV. DARCEY: "Did you guys meet up after you broke up and do the deed? And I bet you're planning to tonight as well, huh? And what else did you do to your poor face since the last episode?" DARCEY is pitiful because the more she talks about how independent/healed/great/self-assured she is, the less she appears so. She seems to think that by saying something, she makes it so; the exact opposite happens. I keep thinking "shut up, shut up... you look so pathetic." Crying to your (again, adolescent, wise-beyond-their-years) daughters and begging for their reassurance and to hear how strong and great you are is just not pretty. And of course she's dating a younger guy! Take that, Orange Dutchman! I am FINE. FINE, I tell you. But let's bicker about the Louboutin assault (NO! I threw it at the FLOOR!) yet again; I must have the last word. Jesse's sad-faced rise from his perch to go console Darcey was so predictable; still I found myself wanting to scream at my TV: "Noooo! Sit down!"

S07.E15: Last Chance for Romance
KateHearts replied to humbleopinion's topic in Married At First Sight
Amber's expression rarely changes. Her eyes don't really show much emotion at all- she will say, "I'm really worried what's going to happen on decision day..." with the same flat expression as when she says, "I'm really enjoying today and I think it will help our relationship." It's fascinating to me. She has a funny little bulldog look to her that is, for the most part, very neutral. If I were truly baffled and upset that I wasn't sure he wanted to stay or cared for me, I think a little frown would appear. It's hard to believe her. And I think in part it's not because she really cares for him or wants to grow the relationship, it's that she doesn't want to start over yet again, or look bad on TV. Bobby made cinnamon rolls. Bobby taught Danielle how to fish in waders. Bobby uncomplainingly accepts two new foster dogs. Personally, I would view him as somewhat of a doormat, which is unappealing in my book. Tristan and Mia- I really turned my head for a minute after the "I want a divorce" and dramatic walkout/frantic phone calls/Mia's disappeared scene and next thing I see is the two of them on the couch in their usual positions: "cuddling," where tristan is sprawled on the couch and Mia is curled in a fetal position, facing away from him, neck hunched in, turtle-style. They are the most interesting study in body language ever. I'm not sure I fully believe either one of their accounts of their numerous fights. He seems irritable and critical; she plays victim and overdramatizes everything. What's a really stupid reason for demanding a divorce and leaving in the dead of night? Why, to see if he REALLY loves you and begs for you to stay, of course! -
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the addition of the horribly cheesy music courtesy of the "Reality TV Band," which seems to be more and more common on these shows lately. Married at First Sight has it too... lame music with lyrics that "fit" the situation. My dear husband tolerates this Sunday nights although he doesn't pay much attention (with the rare exception of gaping at Angela's brash, lewd comments or looking at Jon on the screen and saying, "oh, he's the criminal") and the other night he blurted out, "this music is so stupid!!"
-
Darcey: (blubbering)- "that isn't how you treat someone you love!!" Exactly. HE DOES NOT LOVE YOU. Darcey: (nose dripping)- "he's not going to control this breakup!" Because that's what it's all about, right? Control. What healthy relationships are made of. I love to watch how Paul "comforts" Karine with his phone in one hand and awkwardly pat, pat, patting her on the back the way one would comfort, say, a horse. And what was that scene where he knelt down and buried his face in her chest? Weird, weird stuff. Their apartment is so horribly dirty and cluttered; I can't imagine them bringing a baby into it. And I'm curious as to how he will just hop back to the US, "make some money for a few months," and then return. What kind of job does/did he have? Seems I heard somewhere he does computer work? Still, not so easy to just get work the way he seems to be describing. Angie, true to form: "Wanna have a quickie?" (raspy cough, laugh laugh). Michael was thinking, "thank God; not enough time. Can't wait to spend the extra $600 I siphoned from her account!" (just exactly how are Nigerian ATMs tricky that she needed assistance- to the point that she had to have HIM enter the PIN? And even more puzzling, how does someone have only $900 TOTAL to their name and manage to buy airfare to Nigeria and spend two weeks away?)- And the "difficult ATM" explanation is about as plausible to me as Rachael's explanation about accidentally coming across the social media discussion between Jon and the ex. "so, he gave me his password and somehow I got automatically logged on because I can be logged onto two accounts at one time..." all those words to me mean THIS IS A LIE. I think Himena is totally onto Ricky and is happy to see him go- her acting skills are quite good though; the tears and sad goodbyes were Oscar-worthy. Same with him (scum). If I were her I'd just cash in that ring and move on to the next guy. She seems quite skilled at this. He actually said that he "quit his job" for the wedding. Very strange indeed.

I think it's true that sometimes physical attraction grows. Feelings don't factor into whether you find a person kind, caring, funny, smart, dedicated, family-oriented-- or any of the other attributes that could attract someone to a potential mate. And once you get to know someone, the physical attraction can grow.
-
I think her personality negates any physical attractiveness she may have had.

I was trying my best to figure out what he hell Darcey was wearing to meet Herr TwinFlame. I looked like some sort of bathing suit (pushup style) covered by half a dress (i.e., plunging to her navel). It was hideous. It's kind of sad that the producers get such a kick out of her desperation and attempts to "better herself" with plastic surgery and giant choppers that they highlight things like her 6" heels, her trudging through New York with a steamer trunk and two weekender bags, and her awful looking toes. Her sister underplays it all by saying things like "oh, the steak thing was just her way of being lighthearted and fun." Please, if my husband and I bicker over tearing up a steak like that, and I consider it "fun," just take me out back and put me out of my misery. And while I realize that "all families have their disagreements," I would say that the majority of those don't involve the arrival of the police and being "citated." Tarik does have that one-sided thing with his mouth when he speaks. Add to that the constant "derp" expression and the head-tilt and bulging eyes, and he's in perpetual state of puzzlement and confusion. And that plaid vest/tank top number! I would love to go through his suitcase just so I could laugh and laugh. I think Ximena is in on all of this and is strictly in it for the presents and dinners. Now she has (what is purported to be) a diamond. She can run off, laugh at how she made Tricky Dicky Ricky jump through hoops ("he jumped in the water and he can't swim! I cried until he was on his knees begging for forgiveness!") and enjoy her new loot. She seems way too clever to truly want to marry this jackass... but she got a lot of nice parting gifts and it would be easy enough to block him and never have to look at his blocky little body again. As for Angela and Michael, I found them a little boring this week. I was kind of waiting for her to collapse climbing those stairs. Jon's hair looks better without the Just for Men treatment, and with the trim he looks a little less like a perpetually surprised Paul Bunyan.

But what is "twin flames" even supposed to mean?

I think more likely the response would be, "you are mentally unstable; you really need to get some help."

S07.E13: A Future to Believe In
KateHearts replied to humbleopinion's topic in Married At First Sight
That's an assumption, though... Mia works for an airline and it's quite possible that she could relocate to Houston or quite possibly she has the ability to work from home. There are way too many holes in their story as presented for us to know how it would all play out. I can't imagine that Tristan would ask Mia to put him on her insurance if she had to give up a job to move. It seems his motives are to remain financially above water given that (again, as we are hearing) his businesses are struggling. He couldn't be so stupid as to put them both in peril in terms of income. I continue to be fascinated by their body language and how what they say so often contradicts how they act towards one another. I truly think that Tristan has held the early incidents (arrest/detainment/stalking lies) against her- and it's not unusual that, since this all came down in the first few DAYS of their relationship, this would stick the strongest. First impressions are huge. That said, if I met someone nice and found out a couple of days later that they had serious legal, personality and integrity issues I'd definitely step back. He could have by stopping the whole train; it was his choice to continue. But odds were that his anger and frustration would come out at some point. He was pretending to put on a shiny happy face when she "came back" (and slept with him). Not that I think he is an innocent at all. He overreacted and was unkind to her during this encounter. I agree with her that he should never have cancelled his insurance without verifying that he was covered by hers (and most of us know that doesn't immediately happen. Activation can take some time). Not to mention that he already mentioned that she had been hard to pin down to get it done in the first place! He set her up so that he could unleash on her. And that he did. -
Tarik has this constantly befuddled look; I expect to hear *derp!* whenever he reacts to something. "She won't have sex with me!" (bugging eyes). "She kissed me! I wasn't expecting that!" (head tilt, confused expression). Ricky is gross. He's the classic guy who has convinced himself he is moral and proper in all he does. Except he leaves part of it out. "It's important that I be honest [because I know she'll find out about the real reason I'm here at some point anyway.]" or, "no more lies [except the part about my two children and my estranged wife.]" And I'm just so over the "I love you; we can build a future; you are everything I want in a woman" dreck after a week. Stripper Girl must not have checked a mirror before her packing scene in the yellow dress. She seems to be wearing a bra that is too large, very lacy (hence lumpy)- and that "dress" she was showing off to her daughter looked like a 1950's dressing gown. Angie has a serious case of no filter. Does anyone on this planet want to hear about her frosting plans? ANYONE??! Darcy looked hideous on the train. Overdressed, way too exposed. staggering around on her stilettos with enough luggage to ride a steamship across the Atlantic for a month. This cannot be real. And he wants to meet in a park- how romantic? And she plans to heft all of her faux-designer luggage with her?

adultery isn't a religious term.
-
Absolutely. I can't go along with the attitude of, "well, I'm single; what a married person does [including sleeping with me] is nothing I'm responsible for."
-
I think Darcy looks a lot like she does now in the side shots. And the same baby voice and attempts to look cute and innocent with the wide-eyed blinks. The still shots are a lot more attractive; yet when she is on video and talks, she's very much the same as now.

S07.E12: The Art of Communication
KateHearts replied to humbleopinion's topic in Married At First Sight
I don't think it's okay with him at all. His face is impassive; he is just going through the motions. I know that his comment was a prejudiced one, but I don't think at this point he is at all forgiving after she's lied numerous times.
