  1. Two 14 year old boys were killed within 33 hours of each other on Thursday, one near the Catholic University campus and the other in a metro station. Kids have always had fights but they used to be solved via fists. These days? Someone always seems to have a gun. Two young teenage girls were fighting over a sauce packet at McDonald's last fall & one of them solved the problem by killing the other. Just by coming to visit a city and not seeing any crimes take place doesn't tell the story.

  2. I rarely watch TV after Deadline: White House but tonight, after watching Washington Week in Review, I switched over to MSNBC and instead of Chris Hayes, there was Jen Psaki hosting her show.  Is this something new?

  3. We were home by the time the earthquake hit this morning but didn't feel anything. In 2011, I was sitting by a glass topped table & suddenly everything on it started rattling. Then I heard loud banging noises & thought my husband was hammering a wall upstairs. He came downstairs & said it was an earthquake (he'd worked in Los Angeles for several years so he recognized what was happening). Our damage was a break in the water pipe (under the front lawn) that goes into our house from the main pipe. A number of other front lawns here were dug up around the same time

It would be interesting to see the paths the tremors took today to affect such a widespread area: the Mid-Atlantic to New England (from northern VA & southern MD to Boston & VT).

@oliviabenson Was that in August 2011?

I like "Carefree Highway" as well. Also "Sundown" and "Canadian Railroad Trilogy." In a way, it's too bad that "Edmund Fitzgerald" is the song that everyone immediately associates him with. It may be the worst of his well-known songs. It's worth looking into his other stuff if you enjoy that type of music.

What??? "Edmund Fitzgerald" is a *very* effective song. Not only do the lyrics pull the listener into the tragic story, so too does the haunting music. You can almost feel that chilly water and hear the groans & creaks of a sinking ship. IMNSHO, it's his best, followed by "Sundown". I love his distinctive voice, and the musical instruments used in his records.

  5. Getting weary of all the smug comments in the Washington Post (re: the earthquake) from other parts of the country. The east is the oldest part of the continent and earthquakes are very shallow. That's why people up in Killington, VT, Albany NY, Boston, Tyson's Corner in northern VA, Delaware, southern MD have felt the tremors.

I remember watching on TV all the damage the '89 earthquake did and that scary bridge collapse and the interstate collapse. Awful.

  6. Earthquake in NYC...who'd a thunk? I sure wouldn't want to be in a skyscraper (or walking down the street amongst them 🙄). 4.7 can do damage. They're still repairing National Cathedral after the 2011 earthquake that I think was 5.8.

I just got back from having my lower eyelids tightened. It was done for medical reasons (very dry eyes & repeated eye infections), so insurance is covering it. I'm so glad I cancelled a P.T. appt on Monday. The tiny bandages beside each eye are stained with blood. I'm hiding out at home this weekend. They told me "no strenuous activity". Heh heh...no worries about that 😁.

  7. It's bad in DC these days. Three 12 year old girls beat a disabled man to death not too long ago. Young kids with guns highjacking cars. And the occasional mentally ill person  acting out by stabbing whoever's nearby. I haven't been into the district since the covid shut down and am not eager to revisit it right now.

You hope they will move on.  I had a pair of mourning doves try to build a nest on top of my porch light four years in a row.  There's plenty of trees to build nests in.  They kept coming back year after year.  It was almost a peeve!

Last year a humming bird nested on a low branch in my lemon tree.  I kept checking it out and I think scared her off.  The nest was tiny and almost furry.

Oh dear! I think I saw those same two tiny birds today, up on the same Maple tree branch, *loudly* chirping away again. And I think I saw white markings on them that I didn't see previously. So, they're around, probably still looking for a place to build.

Is there any white on them?  I've forgotten where you are -- I might be able to help ID them.

Just outside DC in VA. No white markings that I could see. And I just see them in the front of the house where there's a good size maple tree (never on the deck in back where we have a bird feeder). They remind me of Juncos but they're tinier and more slender.

Put it outside -- the birds will find it!  I'd brush my dogs outside and just leave the fur in the yard.  Maybe separate the clumps a little to make it easier to pick up, but the birds will love it.

Nestbuilding is just getting started.  Some birds have more than one batch of babies during breeding season, so they nest multiple times.  And goldfinches tend to nest later in the summer.  So, depending on the birds you have, nest building might not end until fall migration starts.

I need to look them up in a bird book. They're tiny birds, dark gray. Oh well, the new wreath looked fabulous for the Easter holiday weekend.

Oh, I know. But it makes me laugh more than it bugs me. I feel lucky when I find an especially egregious one!

Oh my goodness, I totally misunderstood your other post and thought that you’d deliberately given the fur to the birds for their nest!

I have plenty of excess cat hair — how can I donate it to birds?!

Just collect it and put it outside on a shrub or on the grass...or on your deck.

Oh, I thought you were putting out stuff for them to use.

And, yes, they'll use cat fur, not get scared away (most birds don't have a keen sense of smell).  I think if you don't want them to build a nest on the door wreath, you either need to put the wreath somewhere else and accept you're going to share it with them or just not have it out during nesting season.

I just switched back to the Valentine wreath (it's not a welcoming material for nestbuilders).  Now I'm wondering just when is nestbuilding time over???

  13. @kristen111 I was born kinda lazy so I'm happy to stay home.  I have a Thursday morning coffee group at the clubhouse...they're a hilarious group of women. Sometimes I'll go to lunch with one of them  (she should've been on TV...we crack each other up). Thank God I have cleaners every other week (they don't charge a lot so I provide the supplies and have the house "ready" for them).  I use back roads, side roads, state highways, anything but interstates and make appointments for late mornings and early afternoons to avoid rush hours.  I don't really want to travel much any more (planes) but short road trips are fine. My husband loves to travel so thank goodness he has our daughter, SIL & grandson to venture to far off places.

  14. Last spring I hung a pretty, flowery wreath on the front door. One day I stepped out on the front stoop & there was a tiny nest on the stoop. My husband put it on a shrub but I said no bird would want to be that exposed. The bird never used it again.

So...last week I hung a new spring wreath (the previous wreath is a bit mangled from the nest builder). Today I heard loud tweets near the front door. I opened it slowly & two tiny birds flew away, I thought, from the front stoop's ceiling area. I came back and got some cat fur (from a thing that you run over furniture) & placed the fur in two areas of the wreath. I may hunt for some more shedded fur & place it on the wreath. Is this a good idea? Anything else I should do? So much hard work for birds building these nests. I feel bad for them.

Add the annoying emails they send you afterward continuing to badger you about filling out their survey to this peeve!  And they won't stop either!  I'd block them but they're companies that need my email address because I do business with them.

You know I wouldn't feel so bad about it if there was any evidence that they actually responded to criticism with improvements, but these days there is even LESS evidence of that than ever.  In fact, just the opposite!

I no longer participate in these "surveys"...mostly from medical/dental practices. They're annoying.

I never salt eggs. Unless we buy unsalted butter, there is plenty of salt in regular butter. I use a lot of herbs and yes, cheese. I get plenty of salt without adding any. One exception - popcorn. How are you gonna eat popcorn without salt? Fortunately, I don't eat it very often.

Hmmm...several years ago, at an old recipe forum called Gail's Recipe Swap, I learned that someone out in Hawaii, on a diet, used 1 Tbsp Oil & 3Tbsps popcorn. I've used it ever since w/ just a minimal sprinkle of fine sea salt. It's great w/ a glass of Pinot Grigio 🤗

  17. Our family left at 6:30 AM today after a great Easter weekend. All I wanted/made for supper tonight was bacon, eggs, toast & coffee. And early bed. I'm beat 😁.

  19. The only really good supermarket salad bars around here were at Wegmans. They were shut down during the pandemic and only the Asian food bar returned (and I think it's $15/lb...at least that's what a friend said). So, instead of the once big, varied salad bar, they now sell packaged salads & make sandwiches (big woo 😏). I only go to the Asian bar and get those wonderful green beans, the fried chicken in a sauce, and the noodles. And pick up a package of California rolls. Yum!
